Re: "will they be improving the resolution of the game"

Which resolution?

The screen resolution? Thats already as high as any other game.

The texture resolution? The game already supports replacement texture packs, which can be significantly higher resolution than the default textures. These can actually look very nice (particularly combined with a shader mod), but the blockyness of the default textures feels like a better fit for size of the blocks.

The size of the blocks? No, this is unlikely to change, the current size is a good compromise between having enough detail to tell whats going on and not having to place too many blocks to build something in a reasonable time.

The polygon count of models for blocks and other entities? Possibly, I think they're working on making models replacable (like textures already are) in a future relealse. As with textures it is likely that some of the third party models will be more detailed than the defaults.

Bendy or barmy: Why your next TV will be curved

stucs201

Re: If curvature is so great, how come it only curves in one dimension?

They'll be saving curving in both directions for the next round of 'upgrades'.

I can also see them trying to sell us different type of curvature, spherical, parabolic, hyperbolic or maybe just hyperbole.

stucs201

Re: Can't see this catching on....

Actually improved built in speakers may me one benefit. There will be more space for something a half-decent size behind a curved screen than in a thin flat panel.

Whether they'll use that space or not is a different question.

I still don't want want though, just finished getting my TV mounted flat on the wall and connected to proper external speakers.

Re: Doubtless, 5 of the 7 5.25" bays are empty...

Actually no. From the top:

1: Card reader (OK, thats 3.5" device in an adaptor)

2: Blu-ray re-writer

3: Drawer. Yes, a drawer. Its a handy place to keep SD cards and USB sticks.

4: Empty

5,6,7: Additional fan

I think they're quite often filled on gaming rigs, either with water-cooling reservoirs or relocated hard disk racks. 5.25" drives themselves might be nearly extinct (optical drives seem to be just about hanging in there), but the bay itself isn't going away for some markets - its handy to have a largish, standard sized hole to put things, even if its not holding the thing it was originally designed for.

stucs201

Re: This is all very nice but...

Er, my case has 7 5.25" drive bays.

Tesla in 'Ethernet port carries data' SCANDAL

stucs201

Re: "Because ethernet and wireless are the same."

Well yes, someone could plug a wireless widget into the port. But if they've got sufficient access to the car to do that then they've also got sufficient access to interfere with a car with no electronics (e.g. cut brake pipes).

BEHOLD the HOLY GRAIL of TECH: The REVERSIBLE USB plug

stucs201

So instead of the wrong way up...

...we'll now be finding the wrong port.

While the USB-A port is a horrible design at least its the same port on every host device (admittedly the other end of the cable has had this problem for a long time). With cables I guess its not too much of a problem, but most of my USB-A plugs are directly on the device (memory sticks, bluetooth adaptors, security dongles, mouse receivers). True an adaptor cable will work, but it removes some convinience.

Xenon: Bitmap Brothers' (mega)blast from the past

stucs201

I overdid my hacking of the PC version of Xenon 2

I found where the costs of each upgrade was stored in the executable and lowered them (all the way to zero I think). However it seems that what was available at each shop was determined by a price-check, not an explictly coded set of options - so the result was I'd also made everything available half-way through level 1.

It was however great when you just wanted to mess around with some of the less practical options without having to get through half the game just to try something.

(I actually first played this in CGA on an 8086. Even that was far from unplayable, though it was much nicer when I got a new machine with VGA. Even the title music through the internal speaker was recognisable.)

stucs201

Re: tracker rubbish

Tracker programs did of course exist for the PC too. I even had software which could play Amiga .mod files through the internal speaker with no soundcard (quality was very dependent on the size of the internal speaker).

There were even trackers which extended the concept to PC specifics, such as Screamtracker which could track both adlib and soundblaster style sound in the same file.

(before anyone suggests that partially sighted people might benefit from a larger screen even if they can't see it well - this is for people with eyesight bad enough they need to be told about obstructions 2m away, so I don't think they're going to be reading any phone screen regardless of its size).

Re: Temporal error

Not just the same thing, but often from the same supplier.

Its this that proves that targetted advertising is utterly pointless. In a world where we can search for stuff we know we want there is no point showing adverts for that stuff. I'd guess it has a higher click-through rate, however I'd expect the actual extra sales generated to be less than random ads that actually stood a chance of showing you something you weren't already going to buy anyway and may not even have known you wanted (or that it existed).

Pliers? Side-cutters? No.

You want a decent pair of electricians scissors for that job.

Why does the article and sub-heading (at the time of writing, it may have been corrected by the time you read this) refer to it as a Nintendo classic? It was ported to Nintendo systems (along with pretty much everything else), but the Nintendo version wasn't the first, so why single it out?

stucs201

Re: Well that will be worth anticipating

The lack of a pre-existing plot might be good for the movie (assuming they add a plot). However I'm less sure that having an associated plot would be good for the game, some people may then feel they have to play it a certain way (obviously they don't - but some people are easily influenced).

Software needs meaty cores, not thin, stringy ARMs, says Intel

stucs201

Re: Power law

I don't normally grumble about downvotes, but on this occasion hope those responsible aren't specifying processors for real-time systems where a response is required in a certain timeframe to prevent something physically crashing/exploding/otherwise killing people. That isn't the time to be deciding a processor which can't deliver results in time but uses less power is appropriate.

stucs201

Re: Power law

Things per wall watt only matters if things and things per second are sufficient. While often that is the case sometimes its not.

Re: auto-parrallelise code?

Surely image processing is relatively easy to (auto)paralise - just split up into multiple smaller images. Not all processing parallelises that easily.

Touchscreen monitor... Just poke it with a finger, same as you would with the specialised keyboard. I'm sure you can even find a monitor you can take off its stand and lie flat on the desk if you prefer not to have it vertical.

stucs201

Re: The "S" is for stupid

Why a tablet and app? Do you really need an input device containing a battery, processor and ram for this? Wouldn't just plugging a second touchscreen monitor into the computer make more sense?

stucs201

Much as I normally like physical keys and detest touchscreens...

...this seems not very future-proof. Do they expect you to buy another one every time a new version of photoshop adds a new feature and associated shortcut? It seems that a second, touchscreen monitor to dump a load of toolbars on would be a more sensible option.
