An anniversary to remember: The world's only air-to-air nuke was fired on 19 July, 1957

Isn't that 300 meter fireball, plus shockwave, plus EMP*, plus heat flash thats of a larger radius than a fireball. Figure the additional invisible effects would cause problems.

*Maybe not consideirng the electronics.

Re: Has no one figured the correlation

It does remind me of stories on the Reg about shadow IT, if you cannot provide what your users want they will find something else. Except these customers are locked in so are trying the web route because call centres and how call centre metrics are set out are not focused on the customer or service.

After all if you are going to get fobbed off, getting it done via web page is a lot less painful than having to sit and lsten to some awful hold music, interspersed with ads telling you how great the service is.

Re: Enough Rap sheet

Right Big Joh here's some facts because well I think your last point on your rant will out why.

That "shooting victim" was a well-known black thug with a long rap sheet who fit the description of a local armed robber to a tee.

*Actually traffic violations, driving without a muffler, no seatbelt etc, not criminal convictions, but about 6K in fines. Not enough IMO to be a reason for the law to slot him.

Then when stopped (by a real cop, not a "traffic" cop), he tried to out-draw said cop and lost. The cop is alive and the thug is dead, and that's what's supposed to happen when thugs try to kill cops.

*Identifed himself as carrying a concleaed weapon, (not btw the first thing you do if you are going to try and outdraw someone, especially if you are in a sitting position doesn't give you any advantage to warn the opposition), then after identifying this fact was asked to reach for license and registration.

Why is so hard for you not to inject your ignorant biases into supposedly tech-based articles?

*And thats where we come to why I am writing this, ever thought yours is biased?

Also btw wtf

The cops know this, and greatly dislike being portrayed in such a light with no way to fight against it. I'd be sorely tempted to shove that phone down the videographer's throat, but that's just me.

Please tell me the reason you avoided law enforcement (to the greater good for everyone else), is because they wouldn't let you wear jackboots. :)

What counts as left anyway?

Is this an American view of the left? Because thats somewhat different from a European view of left wing?

"The intolerant PC left doesn’t – if you disagree, you’re an enemy.

“I can disagree with conservatives. They don’t like it, but they’ll say other things that are interesting. But on the Left, it's almost impossible to disagree. If you don't buy every single part of their agenda, you’re an outcast."

Because thats never been the way on the other side as well? Hmmn lets go look at some republicans shall we?

Pick the right people you get close mindedness on both sides. Picking one side and not the other makes me wonder about confirmation bias.

As mentioned above it's quite normal for some peole to be business like and cool headed in a crisis especially if they have a responsobility (her daughter), many successful survivors of incidents if you read about it, describe being very focuseed while the stress was happening, it's a useful if maybe odd to outside observer reaction.

Paper wasps that lie to their mates get a right kicking, research finds

Triggerfish

One of the problems with Japanese Hornets (and the main species of Asian Hornet) is they also release the pheromone that incites other hornets to attack also, which is why you do not want to get stung by one. They put a fair few people in hospital and cause a quite a few fatalities each year.

Also if you hit them with one of those electric tennis racket things, they don't always go zap, sometimes they just get annoyed.

Re: Selfish

Well it depends really. There are some who turn to arseholes when they are drunks, we had a friend like it, perfectly nice guy but beer would mean a fight was going to happen. We banned him from alchohol when out with us.

However there are some people who drink because its basically a medical issue, someone with depression drinking, it would not suprise me if thats more someone self medicating. That's a lot lot harder to stop.

It's quite easy to say no excuse what so ever but thats from the perspective of someone who is not suffering, and because it involves mental issues it does not seem so obvious.it's a bit like someone healthy criticising someone with no legs for not going for a healthy jog in the morning.

Triggerfish

Re: With friends like that ...

The original story said the cops were called and by the time they got there he had already killed himself. So I am guessing if you cannot get someone there faster than the police, someone who also can deal with someone who seems a bit disturbed. Then you have no chance.

"netizens are far more interested in grumble flicks than finding out who might be the next leader of the country."

Well to be fair, vote for a prime minister and it just seems the usual wobble between left and right, with one trying to revoke or blame the previous parties actions and look after their mates, until the backlash when everyone gets tittsed off with them and it swings back. Where then the new party get in and spend all their time trying to bring back what was revoked, nix the party who were before thems actions and blame them for everything else and look after their mates, until of course everyone gets pissed off with that and then what happens is everyone votes in the other side, who immediately start tryin to bring back what was nixed by the prior party.....

Frankly feel like the EU referendum was the first significant vote this country (not including the Scots) referrendum was allowed to have that may have made a difference to our future. Who is prime minister thats just chosing between lizards.

Freedom of movement

When I asked why they were offering so little, my friend replied that with the EU’s mandatory freedom of movement, the owners of the company "know that they can get away with it".

If thats one of your arguements for Brexit, do you think it works in a online techpaper thats talking about a lot of British companies outsourcing to other countries?

If we trade with Europe freedom of movement is still going to be happening so your friends sorted, if not he can go contact someone in the often used Asian market, or other commonwealth countries. So I can't see there being a sudden pay rise for developers because we have left Europe.

Re: For Pete's sake @Charles 9

"Goes to designated person."

There's your problem. There's no budget for "the designated person".

You mean there's no IT staff in the hospital at all? That's your problem there I reckon, no secretary either who could be trained to run a simple program, my oh my no wonder hospitals are so rushed.

Keys get lost, tokens get lost, cards get lost. Passwords get forgotten.

Triggerfish

Re: For Pete's sake @Charles 9

Spares can get stolen.

Replacements have to be verified.

The point is not that it costs manpower but that it costs time, which depending on what part of the hospital you're in can be quite precious (that's why I always note the Emergency Room, one place where time pressure is frequent).

Well yes it cost tiume but is it quicker and does it work better?

Here rough process.

Doc turns up to hospital, has not got rfid / token thingy. Goes to designated person. Says has forgotten/ lost current one. They de-activate it, issue a temporary one. Doc starts work.

Yeah sure there is time lost, but it's caused by the doctor forgetting an item, it's going to happen. Everything that takes some security costs some time when it is needed, it's lessening the time while still being pratical and secure that seems to be the issue.

Triggerfish

Re: For Pete's sake @Charles 9

So couldn't there be spares? Could not the hospital employ someone who rather than constantly pushing a space bar, issues out a re-placemnet, you could go even further and have them put a stop on the lost token.
