I would have been quite interested actually to hear from someone who thought that their was nothing wrong with this case.

Cloud gaming storms into the UK

ph0b0s

Still would rather download the demo

How can you test if your machine can run the game properly if you are running it on a remote computer?

Also I assume the game runs at lower quality than on a native high end machine, to save bandwidth. This would be a turn off when playing the demo as it will look rubbish. This would be a bad advertisement for the game.

But Ok if they are trying to deliver content in a different way. It will be rubbish though if this becomes the only way to get demo's. This is alreayd a large problem on the PC, with hardly any games having demos anymore. Now we get them, but they will give a bad indication of what the fully purchase game will be like. Yay, progress...

Intel throws Thunderbolt

ph0b0s

We can forget eSATA as well.

The same was said about USB 3.0. Anything that is not SATA is going to be slower, as unless something changes and HDD's change to another interface they are always SATA. So you are only ever going to get the speed the SATA / eSATA interface can deliver. Plus you get the extra latency of the protocol conversion from SATA to USB 3, Thunderbolt etc. It may not be much, but it is still there.

You can argue about eSATA not being a very practical connection, with lack of support etc. But for speed there is nothing faster.

As far as I am aware.....

Obviously for non storage devices this will be different, but in those cases eSATA, would not be an option anyway.

Sex offenders will get a review – after 15 years

Take 2:

Just listening to the MP's, it seems like Armageddon. I don't think it will make much of a difference, as just think how hard it is going to be to prove you will never be a threat again.

Instead they aught to make it that for jobs where your previous sex offense has no impact on your job performance, sex offenders should not be discriminated against. Then being on the sex offenders register will not be such a human rights issue.

Wow, good judge.

Wow, a judge who has not had the wool pulled over his eyes due to technology and the demonizing of anything to do with copyright, where an allegation equals you did it.

All through this he has been very fair minded and shown ACS and the ilk for what they are. Will other judges be as fair for these kinds of cases. If they have good evidence against someone, then great, roll on the punishment. But maybe the IP address equals infringement and is as good as a DNA match, argument is being shown not to be enough anymore.....

Completely agree and have made the same, though some what tongue in cheek, argument about child pr0n. That if getting music and movies from p2p is destroying said industries, then surely people getting child p0rn from p2p are destroying the child p0rn industry, right?

Now again this a completely tongue in cheek comment in the vain of Jimmy Carr or Ricky Gervais and is not in anyway advocating child pr0n, OK? OK...

There you go, what is should have said. Well that was embarrassing... Man these forums not having an edit function, really separates the men from the boy's. English lesson flash backs....

With stuff like it is OK as long as the BBFC have certified it. You can see where this is going. BBFC certified porn. You can only look at stuff that has a BBFC cerificae on it. I know a bit conspiracy theory and and full of hyperbole but that's the mood I'm in at the moment,

ph0b0s

So more power to the parking attendants?

I understand your point, but if you have to keep a law secret otherwise it does not work, then it is not a very good law. I cannot see anyone wanting to give parking attendants the power to decided when you have parked for too long?

When you make a law you put a line in the sand, you are either over that line or not. There maybe some leeway if you are only just over that line, or there are mitigating circumstances, but that is at the discretion of the authorities. But not telling people where that line, is not on.

"to do so may allow offenders to adapt or restrict their behaviour to conduct which falls short of our prosecution threshold."

This is my favourite part of this magic quote. And the most scary. Either you are making a law to stop people behaving in a certain way. Or you are trying to catch them out. The statement above leaves you in no doubt that they want catch people out rather than change behaviour. In fact they don't want you to have the chance to change your behaviour else they will not get the chance to catch you. That tells me about all I need to know about where our justice system is going.

ACS:Law turns back on file-sharer court case

ph0b0s

Due to threats

What BS. Love the ways he is trying to make people and future prosecutors feel sorry for him. The threats idea is BS, he stopped because his position has become untenable, with case after case failing and upcoming prosecutions of him coming.

I won't go into how someone who has legal threats to thousands is now not happy about getting threats himself.

And the idea that his company has nothing to do with this new company, except for it being setup by old employes. It is just slimy all the way.

And my comments are not due to being a piracy advocate, if you have proper evidence against a person for piracy then fine drag them to court. Still would like to see the police in charge of investigating these things rather than private companies making stuff up.

Police DNA test plan to put off prostitutes' punters

ph0b0s

Where taking DNA would help

The only use of DNA I would advocate is if a prostitute is attacked or killed and you have DNA from the crime, you could then compare it against people you arrest for curb crawling. But importantly you don't get to keep the DNA in a database afterwards. And you would only use DNA from an attack case that is otherwise going nowhere. So purely as another way of getting a prostitute abuser of the street.

Otherwise no matter my stand on prostitution I don't support the taking of DNA as defined in the article. Taking DNA as a deterrent I don't support. Taking DNA should be a tool not a weapon.....

Sarko to use G8 presidency to promote net regulation

ph0b0s

Keep your morality away from me....

Beware of anyone doing anything using words like 'morality' or 'faith' to do anything. If something is really wrong you don't need to use the word morality as people just know it is wrong instinctively, no need for moral justifications.

The only time these word get used as justifications is when someone is imposing their morality or faith on others. Which is morally wrong, ....... right?

Also love politicians. A system that was designed to be invulnerable to any kind disruption or regulation. We need to regulate that.

And finally as I commented on another story here. Always love how people happily hand over controls to governments with the promise that it will help them be protected from terrorism and pedo's. Then get surprised when the government misuse those controls on something that is not terrorism or child protection related.

ISPs battle EU child pornography filter laws

ph0b0s

CP not the real reason for this law.

I know this will come off all conspiracy theory and all, but I think CP is just and excuse so that the EU can have in place a system enforceable by law for blocking whatever content they want, not just CP. One in place it will be quite easy to add other content to the list. Wikileaks or pirate bay perhaps.....

Always love how people happily hand over controls to governments with the promise that it will help them be protected from terrorism and pedo's. Then get surprised when the government misuse those controls on something that is not terrorism or child protection related.

Parents like porn to.

So if they manage to get over all of the technical issues and roll this thing out, who says it will have the desired effect? I would not be surprised if quite a few parents opt out since, just cause you have kids, does not mean you don't like looking at porn. You would be a bad parent if you opted out, which is dumb since isn't this system aimed at bad parents who cannot be a$$ed to learn about parental controls etc. So the parents the system is aimed at are likely not to used it, great plan....

World of Warcraft bot ban ticks off world of critics

Not worth the price

I hate game cheaters, so it is great that people cannot cheat in WOW anymore. But I really don't think it was worth the price paid. If to stop cheaters it means that we cannot have the freedom to own and modify the things that we have purchased, then leave the cheaters for another day. There must be ways to stop them that don't involve us having to shoot ourselves in the foot, to do so.

But yet again to solve a problem, a tool that was not designed for the job is used which create several other problems in the process. But as long as we have solved the original problem who cares, right? Laws should not be used like this.

Canada steps closer to legalising sex work

ph0b0s
Stop

Trafficing a circular arguement

The services discussed in the article are not something I have had any personal experience with and not something that has ever held any attraction to me. I say this with not with an air of moral superiority, but just to explain that I have no care whether these services are legal or illegal.

The thing that does drive me mad about the discussion of laws like this and others, is the argument that more enforcement / criminalization is needed to stop a situation created by enforcement / criminalization in the first place. What do I mean by this?

Well we have this awful situation with trafficking. I would argue this is due to prostitution being driven underground. If this was not driven underground then the profits would not be high enough to make it worth while to the traffickers. And before you ask I don't have lots of figures / evidence to back this up otherwise this post would be too long (if not already).

I could make the same argument with the idea that drug users commit other crimes to fed their habits being used as a reason to clamp down on drug use. Again something that may well be a by product of drug criminalization / enforcement rather than just drug use on it's own. Again drug use is not something I have had any personal experience with and not something that has ever held any attraction to me. So again I have no axe to grind.

So it could be argued that more enforcement / criminalization may in fact increase the amount of trafficking and women hurt. If authorities only cared about stop this awful practice and the harm suffered by the trafficked women, then they would be putting forward more progressive solutions that just more enforcement.

With both drug use and prostitution not matter how much enforcement there is you will never stop it. According to the Freekonmics guys, the biggest decrease in prostitution rates came not from more enforcement, but from sex before marriage becoming more acceptable, as in men had more opportunity of getting sex for free.

All you can do is frame the law so that innocent bystanders like trafficked women and victims of drug crime are not hurt by it. Since as with other wars the war on vice seem to harm bystanders as much as the people fighting the war. I am more likely to know someone killed by a mugger trying to feed their drug habit than someone who has dies of an over-dose.

ISPs under pressure to control online porn

ph0b0s

Childrens Internet

If I was the ISP's I would say to this group. Yes, we can put in a system are children not able to access stuff they should not. They can have their own internet, with only approved content . The links will be tunnelled over existing internet links so you cannot get from the child internet to the normal one. It will have it's own Search engines and DNS and a seperate link the house and to the PC's in the house your children use.

But it will cost 3 to 4 times as much as a normal internet connection. But whats money to keep the little ones safe. Or maybe you could spend a little more time learning how to use those perental controls.......

And why childless people have to opt into a non controled internet. Put the onus on perents to opt out. They decided to have children after all, why has it got to be my problem suddenly.

Slapping allowed?

I think when any of these publishers start bleating that illegal distribution is a really big problem for their industry and they don't understand why. Whoever they are bleating to should be allowed to slap them and tell them to stop being so stupid....

So in the move to digital distribution all media industries have seen it solely as a way of increasing profits rather than sharing the savings with the consumer and trying to make a dent in illegal distribution. You can never stop all illegal distribution, but lower pricing will reduce it by making it less attractive.

I don't support illegal distribution and support reasonable efforts to curb it, but these idiots deserve what they get. Only a shame our governments don't feel the same and are quite happy to protect their price gouging archaic business model at the expense of proper rule of law.

In the efforts to clamp down on illegal distribution all we get is the stick, where's the carrot?

Blu-ray barely better than DVD

ph0b0s

Don't replace 5+ year old DVD's

I would have though that older movies were the ones that showed least quality increase as I bet studios just copy the DVD onto a Bllu-Ray. It is posible for old movies to be re-mastered from the orignal film, but they never bother. Good for Which to point this out.

The lesson here is if you have a 5+ year old movie on DVD, don't bother gerting it again unless review sites have assured you that they have done a re-mastering, so it is worth it. Of course most big budget new movies will have been fiilmed to take advantage of Blu-ray so should look great.

Twitter 'martyr' takes airport joke case to High Court

ph0b0s

And then on to the EU court of human rights I would guess....

The guy was an idiot, but still the case should go all the way as it has ramifications for everyone's free speech. People should think about what they say when it involves terrorism, but that does not mean the authorities should get to ride rough shoot over peoples off the cuff remarks. I think they should have to at least try to prove a little intent.

Since most people use on-line communication (especially twitter) to communicate the same why they would with someone standing right in front of them, it should be treated in the same way by the law. If this joke was told to a friend directly then it would not have had this problem.

Now if the statement had been written in an email (the main form of communication around when the telecommunication law was written) directly to the airport then no-one would be arguing....

I could not agree more. I keep on wanting to move to faster browsers like Chrome etc, but will not do so while they do not have noscript type functionality. Because no matter how secure the browser is with sandboxes etc they always get caught by these JavaScript issues. I used to have a trusted JavaScript list on I.E before noscripts as well, but Microsoft really made you jump through hoops to set it up. I know Chrome is starting to get the message and there is an add on that allows blocking of javascript, but I read it does not work for some sites, like Google's own. So hopefully soon it will get there and I will have more browser choice....

Three-version Avatar disc sets out 15 November

3D...

Jez, how many editions of this movie are they going to do. Sorry James, but I am not interested until the extended length 3D Blu-ray edition is released.

Also waiting for the extended length Blu-Ray version of Lord of the Rings as well. Typical that they release the normal version first...

Actually the more version of their movies they release the less likely I am to buy them as it means you are uncertain whether there is another slightly better version round the corner. They should release an edition for each movie, for each format, called the 'Collectors Final Edition'. As in this is the best we can ever do with the current format, Blu-ray etc, there will be no more until a future format comes out.

Now we are moving to digital distribution it means we will get a new release of every movie each year with a slightly better bit rate. Maybe they should get you to pay a one off subscription / rental to a movie that means whenever you want to watch it you can get the best quality extended version that exists at the time....

Virgin Media introduces P2P throttling

ph0b0s
Thumb Down

Existing traffic management

leexgx, Not quite sure about the point you were making with your post. It seemed to be that you supported the current traffic management system at Virgin, where your speed is capped temporarily if you download a certain amount at peaks times. I completely agree the system was fair and did not discriminate against anyone. You download a certain amount of data during peak times your speed is cut for 5 hours. Great, nice and transparent.

They then extend the peak time to be during the day as well, which I did not support. But this is one step too far. Now Virgin instead of offering a dumb pipe now discriminates against certain traffic. And most people on the forum are falling for the spin of, well this traffics is used for illegal reason's, or it uses a lot of our networks capacity. That's bull.

What is really happening is that Virgin's network is not fit for purpose and they don't want to upgrade it, so instead they put in even more restrictions (these new restrictions now last till midnight instead of 9pm).

Not that these restrictions will have much effect as freetards now get movies, etc from file sharing sites like rapidshare etc. So the network will still be slow.

Do I use P2P or newsgroups, not really, so it does not affect me. So why am I angry, because if it is P2P and Usenet now what will it be next? Virgin have already stated they want to give priority to people watching streaming TV. So Virgin and other ISP's get to decide what you are going to do with internet connection. This is different to the current system that cuts your speed no matter what data you used to hit the limit, P2P or TV or Skype.

ph0b0s

Pointless...

All that will happen is that the 'freetards' will move (if they have not already) to garbing their movies etc from file sharing sites like rapidshare etc Next will be restrictions on those as well. So the congestion will still be the same, with the network grinding to a holt between 9pm ~ 11pm. Good moves Virgin, how about upgrading your rubbish network so it is fit for purpose rather than putting ever more limits on your users....

I never considered 'slasher' movies to be proper 'horror' movies. So that half the top 10 out. So bored of movies about some human nutter running run dispatching people. Give me something supernatural or with a proper non-human monster and I am happy....

Researchers up evilness ante with GPU-assisted malware

ph0b0s

Typical

It will make laugh if malware is the first mainstream programs to make use of GPU processing. It means malware makers will be the greatest innovators for the PC. But I would not worry if malware authors take up of GPU processing is the same as the rest of the industry we won't see any malware on GPU's for a while

I was really excited by the idea of GPU processing since it was first announced. But it has been years and nothing much has happened, except the use of it for a few specialist applications. I understand that not much was going to happen while Nvidia's CUDA and ATI's stream were competing. But now directcompute and opencl, which work with all DX10 GPU's, have been available for a while and still not much is happening.

Also, I would have thought that antivirus scans would have been a great use for GPU processing, as scan of lots of files at the same time would be very parallel. Just what GPU's like.

Most places reporting on this story with 'Kepler the next architecture after Fermi' have missed the point the this is only for the computational card space. Last year Fermi GPGPU cards were also unvieled a long time before we knew anything about what the next Geforce cards were going to be like.

You will have to be patient to hear about the cards and architecture Nvidia will release for the mainstream / game playing part of the market. I think the journo's are to partied up at the Nvidia event to explain this properly at the moment.

Treat the same as Movies

In the UK games like GTA, Manhunter are treated like movies and are given a movie age certificate i.e 18 certificate. The problem I have with what is being done in the US is that video games are being singled out. If they are going to make a law for video games it should be the same as what is done for movies. I would not want my kids to play Manhunter, but I would by the same amount not want them to watch any of the Saw movies.

Games are not special, treat them the same as movies and other media.

Critical Flash vuln under active attack, Adobe warns

ph0b0s

none

That maybe true, but the main point of my post was to say that I won't touch other probably better browsers until they offer these types of plugins to allow you to shield yourself from these zero day issues until patches are avaliable.

Most browser zero day issues seem to come from javascript, flash etc. We must be allowed control over when these run rather than the browsers 'we are secure so we can allow everything on every website to run' attitued. This is fine until a vunerability they have not thought of appears.

The rumour with Chrome was that Google will never allow anything that stops their browser from doing flash or javascripts as most of their ad revenue comes from them.

ph0b0s

Yay noscript...

People wonder why I still use slow Firefox instead of the much faster Chrome or Opera. This is a first class demonstration why. The browser makers always say that their browsers are completely secure so the plugins like noscript, cookie monster, better privacy and ad block are not needed.

But in cases like this with these zero day vulnerabilities (that even affect firefox) I am happy to have these plugins that give an extra level of control and when other browsers have plugins that do the same thing I will be happy to move to them.

From the previous posters comments it looks like Chrome is moving in the right direction. But when I looked up Flash Block it looks like you are forced to allow sites like youtube.

Precrime....

It's great that these new pre-crime laws are coming in. Now law enforcement and society can tell you are going to commit a crime before you actually do based on what you are doing now. It's scientific approach with lots of studies to back it up

-So if you are looking at extreme p0rn they can tell that you are going to either engage in beastiality, non consensual sex involving S and M or messing sexually with a corpses.

-If you are looking at Manga you must be about to molest a child.

They should really expand this and I sure now they have this beachhead and public support they will.

Next to be introduced..

-People playing volent computer games to be charged since they are all people who will go on to commit murder and other violent crimes.

-People sitting motorcycle tests to be charged with speeding, cause they obviously like speeding and will break the speed limit.

-People taking martial arts classes to be charged with GBH as they obviously want to beat someone up in the future.

-People watching movies involing any of the previous activity's because they obviously will go on to commit crimes involving them.

BTW Since I was little, I have played games, watched movies, taken martial arts and watched anime. Oh and I have a sports motorbike, so you really aught to keep away from me as I am obviously the next Jack the Ripper or Dahmer or can't think of any famous Ped0's or Speed limit breakers...

DfT 'unwittingly' bigged-up speed camera benefits

ph0b0s

Due to cost cuts

When the budget was there to have them, then they were vital and safety groups should be happy. Now the budget for them is being cut then to placate the safety groups the message is they were not so necessary, so don't worry that they are now going, cause we can't afford them.

I think this will happen for a lot of other things, that under the previous administration we were told were vital. We will now be told they are not as vital by a new administration who's only difference is that they cannot afford them.

So that vital hospital; it was not that good, so you don't really need it anymore. None of this stuff would have been admitted to if money was not tight.
