Dr Who shoves BitTorrent in the Tardis

Velv
Pirate

The Pirate Code (or perhaps they just be more guidelines)

In the good old ship days, The Pirate Code governed the share of the spoils that went to each member of the pirate crew. One share per crewman, one and a half for "officers" and two shares for the Captain.

Copyright "Piracy" is not (for most "Pirates") about making a profit - its about watching what you want when you want. Yes, there are many websites making huge profits from piracy. But the majority of the crew make no money out of their "piracy".

Making stuff available via on demand is all very well IF you've got the infrastructure and service to support it. Have you got a home media that lets you watch the on demand on your TV, and does your "unlimited" broadband service really give you unlimited "downloads" of streaming media (most don't!).

Will it make any difference? Probably barely measurable.

Tech conferences: Not just here for the FREE BEER

And there was me thinking that SysAdmins went not just for the free beer, but to find proof that there actual real women in the world. And not just real women, but ones in high heels, smart suits and glasses, with long flowing hair and welcoming smiles. Dang, that stuff on the internet is real.

But in all seriousness, and to reiterate the article, social networking will do you a world of good in career and knowledge progression. Don't just limit it to paid for conferences in far away towns - all those tech forums you read every day - suggest those in your town meet for a beer. IT Contractors do it, why shouldn't the Permies?

UK.gov's minimum booze price dream demolished

Re: The politician's lemma

Politicians are like nappies...

Velv

Re: Sorry ...

There is already a problem in Scotland...

If you buy your booze for home delivery from, for example, tesco.com (although given Troy Hunt's revelations, who would), then you are buying your booze in England, and won't be subject to the Scottish minimum price.

The trouble with all these "theories" about the impact of minimum pricing is that you won't actually know the outcome until you try it. Only through experiment can you objectively observe the results and draw an conclusion. That is what science is about, unlike religion and politics which are about who can shout the loudest about their doctrine.

(In proper reply to Irongut, while there may be an increase in "cars full of average people" driving two hours across the border, I doubt the cost of petrol for a four hour round drive would offset the difference in price of the alcohol. Vanloads, maybe, but not cars).

Re: Hmmm?

It shows that "unrestricted" TLDs was badly thought out in the first place.

In reality we should be getting rid of all non-geographic TLDs (including .com, .net, .org, etc) so that all domains can be tied to a geographic country whose laws they will comply with. Registrants can choose which jurisdiction they want to have registrations in (no limit, just comply with the laws of the country of each registration for all content related to that registration no matter where it is hosted).

Cuts through this messy "you've got a .com so you must be a Merkin" when you claim to be offering services elsewhere. .us - comply with us law. .gb, comply with UK law. Etc

Software disaster zone Knight Capital bags $400m lifeline

Velv

Re: And since it’s just a testing program, it didn’t keep track of any of its activity...

So irrespective of the testing program not keeping logs, Knight were using the new RLP application to place trades on the NYSE and it is a regulatory requirement to maintain an audit trail of all transactions.

What they really meant was that there were so many logs that they could easily tell what trades were the testing software and what trades were placed through other means.

Velv
FAIL

Re: but what if...

Err, that's what it's designed to do. The whole point is to complete LOTS of trades at a very small profit each.

The problem was that the test wasn't validating that the deal was making a profit, and it just merrily went ahead with trades profit or loss.

Judge rejects Apple's calls for Samsung censure

Evidence

Evidence is EVIDENCE - its existence does not rely on being filed on time.

One must question the judge's decision to exclude it then expect a jury not to be able to view it. OK, so perhaps a financial penalty should be placed on Samsung for submitting it late, however should the case go in Apple's favour the exclusion of the evidence gives grounds for Samsung to appeal.

And ultimately the winners are the lawyers

Apple plans extended iPad display through 'Smart Covers'

Velv
Flame

THAT'S NOT A PATENT

There is NOTHING new or innovative about what has been described - everything here is already possible, and it is simply applying existing designs and technologies to an Apple platform. There are devices with opening covers that show different screens (Didn't the RAZR have that, what about Nintento consoles with two screens), there are touch screens (I've got a Leather A4 folio that captures writing on one side to display on the screen on another).

So I haven't bothered my arse to go and read the full application, and there may be something "new and unique", however all this is likely to generate is lawyer revenue.

So may not be the same problem, but...

Went on a long weekend "holiday" to London with friends (Thursday to Sunday). Two of us on Three stopped getting 3G data over Friday night (had been fine all day Thursday and Friday, even at The Oval), and didn't get it back until we returned to Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon. Those on other networks didn't have a problem.

Anyone else in the UK experience similar problems?

USB charges up to 100 watts

Velv

When will office desks be produced with built in power distribution of this type? Why do we still need power bricks for everything? Yes, this standard will allow us to remove some. But I'm betting the laptop charging still requires a brick.

Every office desk has a monitor, mostly now flat panel with a brick. Why not centrally power a bank of desks with one 20v brick?

Let's take it one step further - instead of just "cumputer" stuff with USB being powered, let's set a world standard for low powered devices. Aim to have a new voltage/amperage (power) combination available in every home, office, hotel, etc in the world. How many travellers take something that doesn't require a power brick (the hair straighteners being the obvious exception). Most devices need the power brick and a plug converter. If we can set a universal standard then we all benefit.

This won't happen overnight. And I know some pessimistic commentards will point out flaws. This is a high level suggestion to get us started. They said it wouldn't work trying to get mobile phones onto a standard charger socket, but that's getting there, and over time the obsolete ones disappear..

'Unfair' tariff tweaks yield networks £90m

Re: Putting the CON back into CONtract

While it might technically be OK to have the T&Cs permit price variations, what is being challenged is the fairness of this type of clause.

Is it FAIR for the telco to increase the price over the duration of the contract (irrespective of the T&Cs)?

Given these contracts are typically for a maximum of 24 months, it really isn't fair for the telcos to have the right to increase the prices during those 24 months - inflation is a fact of life, and while the rate may vary slightly from month to month, prices are always going up, and almost every other industry factors that into their contracted prices.

Vodafone to let you roam in Europe at UK prices

Velv

Re: Get a local PAYG phone

Why should we be expected to f&*k around with PAYG phones when we go abroad?

The same operators run the networks in most European countries, and given they claim to be global companies (who pay tax only in the cheapest tax haven) then they can afford to give all Europeans the same deal as their home network no matter which country they are in.

This offer from Vodafone PROVES that the technology is in place for both the inter-operator billing and the customer billing at the lowest possible rates, however (until now) all the companies are simply interested in screwing the customer for as much money as they can.

"too much hysteria about racism"

This could/would have happened just as easily if it had been outsourced within the UK (EDS/HP, CSC, Atos, Logica, etc. It is about the loss of experienced staff.

TUPE would move the experienced staff initially, but history shows they have little loyalty to either employer and find themselves new jobs relatively quickly. The supplier is then left recruiting inexperienced "cheaper" labour to fulfil the contract. THAT IS HOW OUTSOURCING MAKES A PROFIT FOR THE SUPPLIER. Outsourcing NEVER improves service.

Assange's Ecuador asylum bid has violated £200k UK bail, say cops

Velv

Re: breach of bail conditions?

Bail is granted so that you return to court as and when requested by the court, but you otherwise have some freedom and are not detained on remand.

The conditions are there in an attempt to detect someone fleeing, or where such conditions are in place, prevent interfering with witnesses and victims, visiting certain locations, etc.

Breaching the bail conditions means he can be detained on remand until the courts request him

Assuming he attends court when requested, it is up to the court if the bail can be returned.

We have a legal system to protect the guilty from persecution - any additional charges will be subject to the same legal system, and attempting to subvert the course of justice is a crime in itself, something Assange is clearly guilty of attempting to do.

Julian Assange extradition: What's next for WikiLeaker-in-chief?

Velv
Flame

Simple answer:

UK government gets a written guarantee that Sweden will no extradite Assange to the US before he is allowed to return to the UK. They did it with Jordan for the extradition of Abu Qatada, and it could be equally argued Assange threatened National Security as much as Qatada (one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter).

Anyone who thinks Assange is at more risk from the US Authorities in Sweden than he is in the UK is deeply naive.

If I was accused of rape, I'd be fairly keen to clear my name. Clearly this isn't high on Assange's agenda.

Assange loses appeal against extradition to Sweden

Velv
Flame

No matter what you think of wikileaks, the man is accused of RAPE.

RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE RAPE

If he is innocent, he should be desperate to prove his innocence. Doesn't matter if he is charged, arrested, or simply subjected to media flogging, he should be trying to CLEAR HIS NAME, not sidestep the accusations and divert attention (unless of course he knows he's guilty).

There are MANY people who claim extradition from the UK to the US is far too easy. It's actually easier than from Sweden, so if he's really worried about extradition, he should be desperate to get out of the UK.

I know some people are blind to the true extent of the situation and will support Assange just becasue he founded wikileaks and it's freedom of speech at all cost. But is rape an acceptable cost? For many years "Wanna be in my gang" was hailed as an anthem. Strange you don't hear it much these days since the truth came out about the singer...

Don't bother to down vote if you're an Assange Fanbois. THINK about the whole situation, and consider who you would "let off" with raping your daughter. For the record, I support wikileaks.

Cyber crimes are starting to show a flaw in the concept of extradition.

Where did the crime actually take place - was it in the US or outside the US? And where was dotcom when the crime was committed - inside the US, or outside the US?

The logical conclusion is that any state in the world could request the extradition of anyone anywhere because they have breach a law in that state, even if they did not commit a crime in their own country. Example - Saudi Arabia requesting the extradition of homosexuals from the UK, even though they've never visited Saudi.

OK, so this may be an extreme conclusion, but until we as a planet agree the limits of jurisdiction, these examples remain plausible.
