Facebook's ONLY failure: Expectations management

Naughtyhorse

no news here

Markets have been doing this since there were markets. its a fundamental property of the system

and there are more than enough idiots like matt so impressed with their own cleverness that i daresay

it will happen again.... soon

listening to market experts is like listening to gambling addicts. everyone else is a fool taking risks ,but they have a system. sad really

fair point :-)

%5 of the world's wealth.

not counting oil reserves i guess.

and for another thing what about your average thick as pigshit american christian fundamentalist? they would appear to make up the majority of the american electorate (it it NOT possible to get elected to high office in the US without going to church every Sunday), so shouldn't uncle sam be included in your count too?

Naughtyhorse

Re: Another week, another moron uses the phrase "climate change denial".

The hockey stick has been proved reliable time and time again, even to the extent of revealing that nasa didn't always know where and when their satellites were.

it's well past tiresome how the CC science remains pretty consistent, while the deniers keep on having to radically rethink and reinvent their gobshite to preserve their meme.

this long since ceased to be a matter of science and has passed into the realm of the political, at which point, given the entrenched views of the deniers, further debate is pointless, lewis believes what lewis believes and there is literally nothing that anyone anywhere is ever going to say that is going to move him on this.

US space programme in shock metric conversion

Naughtyhorse

Re: Err...

I get the whole factorisation argument, and i concede that 12's 16's etc make sense from that regard, and 10 is particularly useless for dividing stuff up.

But i think where decimal wins is in conversion factors, which (excluding those where time is a factor) always come out as 10's or multiples thereof. we all count in base 10 (speak for yourself earthling) it therefore makes sense to measure everything in the same base we use to count.

Re: Not likely.

"Had to learn it? We've been teaching metric units for the last sixty years."

you don't need to learn it, you just need to have it explained..once, ten minutes tops and thats it for life

no need to worry about insane conversion factors how many bushels per second in a foot pound per acre etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

all we need to do now is decimalise time, dump all them awkward 60's from the business and we'll be set

I recall speaking with some merkin infrastructure engineers a few years back and gently ribbing them about what is 7/16 of a mile in furlongs etc etc when they told me that in some states some utilities have been metric for years. causes no end of fun when the electricity company is laying cable by the yard and trying to avoid that big ol water main thats about twenty meters from the road intersection..

John Humphries is far and away the worst journalist not employed by murdoch.

he has less than zero credibility at anything.

he approaches his job like a pre-pubescent precocious air head who thinks that merely adopting a contrary position to his subject and then hammering away at them until they recant a piece of irrelevent punctuation constitutes a 'victory'

(nuff said he thinks reporting is a competition!)

I got sick of watching this dick every sunday all through the 80's interviewing unionists from a republican point of view, immediately followed by an interview with a republican (voices changed to detract credibility) from a unionist stance.

meanwhile in the background someone who had a vague inkling of what the fuck they were on about tried to fix the situation (wip)

a pox on him.

Compulsory coding in schools: The new Nerd Tourism

Naughtyhorse

Re: Andrew - you are wrong.

how many great potential coders are there out there that don't even know it?

prolly none TBH. if you are interested you'll get there on your own (pretty much everyone here today did). Help those who want to know, for sure, but compulsory? i don't think so.

Apart from anything else if the syllabus is anything less than coding high level compilers in binary, or simlar, there's always some git who'll point and say "but that's not _real_ coding - real coding is done, blindfold, on horseback, in a hurricane, with the project spec being screamed at you in Chinese, by a non Chinese speaking German" - a bit like the jouro in the story. HTML and CSS may not be the pinnacle of the coders art, but for a bloke who only surfs and emails, on a 1 day course... i think it's enough of a glimpse behind the curtain.

Re: $28.57 per user

correction....

to accurately calculate that metric you need to subtract the number of users that were signed up to both services before the buy out, if they were fb users already, then even by the fucked up economics of the social media IPO bubble then those guys are already contributing their last full measure to the FB party, so you cant count em 2wice.

given the type of service that instagram offers, and the usual objections that prevent people taking up an FB account in the first place, i'd caluculate that fb paid approximately $1,000,000,000 per new user.

There! fixed it for you.

Re: @ChrisM: you lost me right at the end...

theres tons of pre digital content thats been ditched that people are endlessly moaning about. - or to pot it another way theres tons of people turning cartwheels about classic early cinema, though lost, but found mouldering in a besement somewhere.

and really wtf is 100 years all about? the content churn in the post internet world is so massive that content a few years old is hopelessly outmoded.

seems to me an attempt by copyright holders to get onto the same gravy train as the patent trolls - fuck that for a game of soldiers

Naughtyhorse

The regression models that Facebook and Google use to predict......

What exactly?

I told FB i like Joni Mitchell a few years back, and have told them very little else about me since. so now, dutifully every other FB page load has a little ad exhorting me to buy 'blue' - something i have done a few times since 1970 - but no so much since i got the cd in the mid 80's and ripped it to mp3 in the 90's.

2 weeks ago i filled out a new 'scrip for specs and, somewhat stupidly (i was trying desperately to find a pair of frames that didnt make me look like that uber-twat gok wan) i gave them my email addy. now i get an ad for varifocals along with my joni - blue ad.

could someone please explain to my just exactly how there is 'value' in knowing my purchase history if all it is used to do is generate ads for stuff I ALREADY HAVE??

and dont even get me started about the time i bought a sat nav and camera of amazon... 3 years later and they are STILL suggesting cameras and sat navs i might be interested in - admittedly both have been replaced since then BUT NOT AT AMAZON and not the week after I bought the fucking things.

Its nice that we get to play with sites like FB and we certainly wouldnt be able to do so without the massive con these guys have pulled on the ad wankers, but surely one of these dickheads is going to notice that the emporor is naked some day soon?
