Plans for fully 3D-printed gun go online next week

Naughtyhorse

will it have any impact at all...

merkins currently kill 30k people a year with their god given metal guns, and they clearly dont give that much of a fuck about that number*. Say this plastic piece of crap takes off in a big way and next year there are 32k gun deaths.

so what?

*After 35 australians were killed in '96 they banned all semi-automatic rifles and all semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns. In the UK in '86 after 16 deaths at Hungerford we did the same. This is what normal people do in these circumstances. Freedom and liberty are one thing - but crazy people strolling round slaughtering school kids??? It's not that hard to work out what to do about it, or so it would seem. Actually apparently it _is_ hard to work out what to do about it, even with 91% of the population in favour of _some_ kind of control.

hes not being sarcastic, and you are entirely correct :-)

Naughtyhorse

hyperbole much

Maybe there is a tendency to 'mix to the meters' more with all digital kit, and as for mixing to cans.... well do that and you will get what you deserve. I'm sure that the kids making music today really care about the sound, well some of em do. Praps the democratisation of the tech has something to do with it here - i have a studio on my spare pc that george martin would have killed for in the 60's - unlimited tracks, incredible s/n, absolute piece of piss to edit, unbelievably flexible signal processing tech, and only cost a few grand. But of having the kit is only a very small part of the equation of course.

I think the issue is more of the context in which music is played these days - it seems to be the soundtrack to our lives rather than an activity in itself. Could you imagine kids today sitting still and shutting the fuck up for an hour to listen (actually listen) to an album from start to finish? Of course not. Grumpy old fuckers like me are just a guilty - far and away the best stereo I have is in my car, where most of my listening is done these days - Mp3's with all the associated road and engine noise - with at least 25% of my attention devoted to predicting what random action the fuckwit in the beamer in front is about undertake.

Given the attention and excitement I remember when Dark Side of the Moon or Aja first came out I cant really see how that would fit in my life today - and after a few thousand listenings i can sing along with Gadd's awesome drum solo on Aja, so don't really need to concentrate on the music much :-) (beamer drivers permitting)

If we value music less (the fact that cowel is walking around sans bullet holes proves that), then it's hardly surprising that the quality of writing or engineering of the music declines (oddly not performance - there are some incredible players around these days, which is good, so long as they keep on playing the old tunes).

As for Dr. Dre's poncy cans.... I guess the name iPhones was taken.

Naughtyhorse

Re: Now i hate apple....

The point at issue is one of an illogical statement

I get what it is that you fail to understand - you don't need to keep repeating it :-)

so third time's a charm.

clause 1:

apple say that if I discontinue siri they will delete all my data.

clause 2:

apple say that after 6 months my data (voice recording) is anonymised

Given that a) i was dumb enough to buy an iAnything in the first place. and b) after 12 months of asking siri where the nearest ER was and being directed to fan sites devoted to the excellent tv series, I discontinue the service.

Now, apple have stored every syllable that I have uttered to siri in the previous 12 months, 1/2 of which is tagged with some number that only apple can use to ID me (and I'm sure no amount of money from a data miner would change their mind - wink! wink!) The other 1/2 is still MY data, but anonymised (apart from the fact it's a recording of my voice FFS - so it kinda IS associated with me, what with it being my voice asking 'where's the best place to dispose of a dead body'? for eg) which they, as we have both pointed out, cannot delete, as they cannot identify it, but I or anyone who has engaged me in conversation for any length of time would be able to identify.

So why are they claiming they can delete all my data?

It is not possible. Just because they have removed a tag that _they_ use to id my data does not necessarily mean that it can't be identified. It's my voice! In case you are wondering I sound exactly like Morgan Freeman - see what i mean!

thats all

I'm only a lowly engineer that builds the stuff, but no one has ever explained to me exactly how it is that selling something i own to someone else then makes that thing function differently - to my advantage.

it's clearly bollocks - you want to change the behaviour of the organisation - change senior managements KPI's and tie it to a bonus scheme. job done! Plus you retain ownership of the asset and get the benefit of ALL the improvements - not just the tiny slice that can't be hidden from the taxman.

Re: Mainstream

trouble with that is..

a) Economy 7 comes with the sting in the tail of a higher tariff during the day, or higher standing charge.

b) If millions of people suddenly sign up for it then the business case for E7 goes away. (not least because they have you by the balls and you HAVE to recharge overnight)

Naughtyhorse

Re: Oh FFS

Some charger physical connectors can carry different types of power...

(leaving aside ohms law - which is your real answer)

you mean like diesel and petrol, and how do we solve that one?

Naughtyhorse

Re: Mainstream

well there is a little bit more to it than that.

seeing as we have so cleverly been sweating the assets of our pre-privatised rolls royce engineered grid for the last 30 years, it's pretty much on it's last legs now. with many systems running over 130% of their ratings for part of the day.

Add to it 20 million people wanting to charge their noddy cars too, brings pictures of camels and straws to mind.

I'm sure it will work....eventually, but it will be a struggle.

And as for hacking leccy in general--- rly? you are aware that the countryside is teeming with unguarded 11kV/LV transformers with open terminals as we speak, and the only times I ever hear of someone nicking the stuff, is when they fuck up and, briefly, become part of the network.

meter fraud in general is more widespread and AFAIK no one gets away with it for that long (then again, if they did, I suppose I wouldn't know about it!)

AutoDesk products being resellable....

The EULA _inside_ the sealed box said - (and i'm paraphrasing here for the sake of my sanity), 'by breaking the seal on this box you agree to (amongst other things) not re-sell it.' - so you had agreed to the eula before having the chance to read it, which is, I guess, the basis for the legal challenge. (cos we all read eulas carefully, and have a lawyer give it the once over before checking that box on the bottom of the dialog, don't we?)

It's a bit moot in practical terms as they have shifted to a subscription model with annual updates and guaranteed non forward compatibility, so you need to have a moderately recent version (less than 3 years old) to work in the market without looking like a muppet, and the original licence to run the new software.

I can kind of see their point. unlike most vendors they produced a package that pretty much worked straight out of the box (okay, it was actually rev 17!) - and then had to keep piling extra crap and bloat on with each rev, and vast numbers of drawing offices said 'fuck that, we'll stick with the one that works, and we already know how to use' - not good from Autodesk's point of view.

The upside is, for the casual user or student is that their licensing software is a joke. :-D

success saving cities large amount of money??????

Orly?

Take a look a Colchester, Essex, recently (still in the death throes) of an ever so clever experiment to ban cars from the town centre.

not buses, or taxis, or motorcycles, just cars.

All the inconvenience and expense of a pederstrianised town, none of the advantages. see, i did say it was clever.

on local news last week the traders in the town held a mock funeral for the town (cost << £10M) due to the trade they have lost in the few weeks this lunacy has been in place. the county council backed down (ish) and have declared they will abort the abortion... at the end of the month.

so no cars, more public transport than you can wave a stick at, and a 25% increase in business failure. Some way to save money that!

Have you thought about a career as a town planner? or let me guess you already are one!

Flexible flywheel offers cheap energy storage

Naughtyhorse

Re: 15KWh?

My take is that the 15KWh figure was selected precisely because it is the same sort of storage density as lead acid batteries; given the choice, a kinetic energy store is preferable to a chemical one, simply because of the toxicity of the latter.

My take is that the 15KWh figure was selected precisely because it is the same sort of storage density as lead acid batteries; given the choice, a chamical energy store is preferable to a kinetic one, simply because of the tedium of spending all morning pulling bits of a busted flywheel out of ones face.

Naughtyhorse

Re: 15KWh? - disintegrate following an impact.

Its a huge issue.

in the dim distant past (about '80) i recall being talked at in college about JET, which used a big fuck off flywheel to store energy - all the numbers have long since eveporated (i just recall them being mind boggling), but i do remember that the building was sited so that in the event the flywheel got away, it was far enough away (miles and miles) from any population centres, as a flywheel going through bristol would have killed thousands.

and further why MVA for PV and wind? a couple of kva would do it for britain :-) the sun dont shine and the wind..... well it's never the right _kind_ of wind.....

I can answer this!!!!!

Why is it that all their road signs are in Welsh too?

It's a diabolical plot to kill the evil saes!

there are loads of un gated level crossings in darkest wales - each of which is preceeded by the bilingual sign explaining what it is, and how it works and what to do in the case of an emergency. in welsh first!

now given welsh is an aincient tongue - so aincient indeed that words for new technologies have to be imported from other tongues - 'radio transistor' from the english (you have to say it with the accent) and fenester from the latin (i shit you not - welsh is older than windows, glass ones that is) so you can imagine the kind of essay you end up with trying to writh the level crossing warning.

consequently the saes never get as far as the bit they understand, and <hopefully> get hit by a train
