UK watchdog Ofcom tells broadband firms: '30 days to sort your speeds'

Re: But there is no legal imperative for these companies to comply with the code

I can think of a few; water, energy, press regulation. They are all captured to some extent. But you have to remember they are commercial businesses and operate in their interests. That is not always the same as every consumers interest.

Woe Canada: Rather than rise from the ashes, IBM-built C$1bn Phoenix payroll system is going down in flames

I can think of a few disasters like this. One where there was a massive gap between what was promised and delivered that led to termination. A friend told me the integrator had written up internally a positive case study on the same project. Big difference between promises and detail design after contract signature. Most companies unlike governments can hide these as sunk costs; CAPEX rich and blurred by EBITDA reporting.

Well done, UK.gov. You hit superfast broadband target (by handing almost the entire project to BT)

Re: Maybe

This a use case for 5g outside Europe. But not everyone has as good unbuilding coverage as you and contention / capacity at peak time caused people I know too many issues. But well done to you...

Vodafone won't pay employee expenses for cups of coffee

gatekeepers

Expenses in corporates are a nightmare. They pay layers of internal people and external agencies to make it as difficult as possible to claim expenses. They are incentivised to reduce YoY expenses and really could'nt give a damn about being paid back in timely fashion. It takes hours to make claims and they use your personal credit to help with cashflow. I set aside a half a day for scanning and attaching and printing expenses and got forbid you mislay a receipt or catch a taxi at the wrong time of day. All they do is waste time and piss of staff for no reason.

As far as I can tell they all have some throttling

EE do something with video, O2 throttle last time I looked. Remember this is backhaul between networks so maybe some limitations there also.

BA CEO blames messaging and networks for grounding

jerehada

So by messaging he means some sort of enterprise service bus was taken down ? also a power surge protection is normal so what went wrong with the switchover to redundant power? The hints from this a bit like the Talk Talk hack suggest something very simple and not some unavoidable impossible to understand failure they would like to media steer us towards.

Three to lawyer up unless Ofcom intervenes in spectrum market

jerehada

That's not easy. Say you manage to build a third more base stations do you think you would be able to compete with a third higher cost base? Moreover they share ran sites with EE through MBNL.

EU mulls €3bn fine for Google

Re: Seriously...

It's ironic / chronic that Google uses stifling innovation as a reason they should not pay to transit you tube video, whilst at the same time restricting innovation through their monopoly in the search and advertising.

French maverick sniffs around O2

jerehada

Re: Shouldn't O2

It tells you they understand more about mobile spectrum and bundling services than Sharon White at OFCOM. To be fair it looks a genius move from a BT perspective.

Ofcom's head is dead against Three and O2's merger

jerehada

What jumped out was that she used revenue and not returns on investment or bottom line. If you look at all the operators bottom lines, given the level of investment, they are abysmal. If you look at 3s investment and returns its madness. I wonder if she is prepared to invest in mobile operators because its a futile business to be in.

I would have thought as an economist she would have had a different view regarding economic profits attracting investment.

Didn't Garner go to Nationwide a mutual building society? I'd say thats not the same as a large PLC.

Google will quit Europe

Saw a funny BBC editorial that said Google might quit Europe and suggesting this would be dire. Really ? All that ad words Internet sales tax dosh from small and large business's, I don't think so I am sure others would fill the hole pretty quick. I think the point of the news sharing is its another Google market distortion paid for by the ad words monopoly.

Chinese hackers spied on investigators of Flight MH370 - report

jerehada

Remarkable they can launch at such short notice an attack that works so comprehensively and defeats virus protection. So in a nutshell where an organisation has anyone who opens an attachment they are then compromised. They can they penetrate any organisation through such on the face of it simple technique as spear fishing. Seems every organisation to me should be looking at where packets are send and who by. Perhaps quarantining far more where suspicious.

no one wants this in the UK but why cannot we stop it

Sad day if you know what happended to Rowntrees and Terry's. Seems to be a sovereignty point here the governemnt has given up the ability to act in national interest vis-a-vis take overs so we the public cannot influcnce our representatives to get the decision we want for a business that is in the UK. I think we need a "final solution" for highly leveraged business's and bankers that provide no social worth.
