Given nothing actually forces you to upgrade to the new version (despite oooh the version you are on going out of support) it seems the only person who can't see that your problem is to do with the support life cycle is you...

You're missing the point, this has nothing to do with the general quality of papers coming out of China.

This was a specific incident about a specific paper. Someone made a comment about an individual paper, that was peer reviewed by knowledgeable and hopefully independent scientists in the field, then accepted by the editor of PRL for publication (indeed was one of the Highlight articles in that particular issue). That comment was solely to rubbish the paper based on nothing more than the ethnicity of the authors, no other reason was suggested for why the paper might be no good. So how exactly is that not racism?

Apart from the fact that if they do come knocking what you should actually do is refuse to let them in given they have no right to enter your home. If they want to try and get a judge to issue the police with a warrant to search your house (on the grounds that you live in a house therefore you must watch TV...) let them try.

US rules for credit cards are mostly the same.

No they don't. What you may have encountered is the fact that in some (all?) European countries the merchant can pass the handling charge on to you.

This is not universal, indeed if you are happy to have a high APR lots are free. Like the four (from three countries) I have in my wallet for example...
