Perl was really the first attempt at a scripting language (I exclude Bash etc. here) and it was not orthogonal e.g. there are different structures for IF statements which could have been regular without too much effort.

It's just that no one had an example to learn from.

Early on my Python was poor and I am no guru now, I don't need to be for what I do just competent.

Programming languages are just that - tools to get a job done.
