"should the US be able to annex assets abroad without regard?" No. they should just play by the rules, and ask foreign law enforcement authorities to get the data and accept a yes or a no. Or Microsoft et al should just tell us that any data on their sever anywhere belongs to the US authorities. The funny thing is that to help Microsoft et al we should stop using them as much as possible because they have no point at all if they cannot prove they are loosing business. An other question is of course if they actually give a shit about protecting anybodies rights and privacy.
I am nor a X or a P, but I wonder about this X and P a lot. I cannot understand or believe this new "understanding" between X and P where X defines when X drops the shirt and P can have it all. Why all this waiting for X when a P. As a teenager, and the P, waiting and waiting, for X for no avail, still pissed off with this, then huge a P, waiting for the X. What the hell is going on here, is P still waiting and waiting for X to tell when he can have it in. I cannot believe it, at all, there is no other explanation to this cook up than a agreement between X and P. Fuck you both, I would say, but will not, understanding how long you P has waited for this. And to level this smoothly off, business is business. Bull, and goodby.
And I would like to add that there was indeed a time when IBM representatives where the most disgusting persons you would ever meet, and I know things have changed, gone to MS perhaps. One of the moust "funny" things was a 45kg girl (a customer) who told me about a 120kg IBM service guy who refused to move the punch card device he was supposed to fix because it was +20kg. So this girl moved it for service, her self, across the room for his convenience. There was a lot of this around 60 and 70, on the other hand I would not, perhaps, write this had I not known a guy at IBM 1965. Oh Christ, have I met some IBM representatives.
What a hell of a word. Open like nice, what a miss understanding. There has never been any nice with open. Open is where you cannot hide behind your company, their lawyers, and your errors. Open is where you cannot onanate behind closed doors. A world where your imaginary penis is just imaginary. And now forgive me for this rant. Now, during my 35 years of programming I have had to understand and accept that I have never had the right to question the shit my superiors have programmed nor have I ever had the right to question mad time schedules. What a nice life, always supported bye strong dorks as long as there was nobody but me to accuse. Open source is nothing like that, it's more like honest, shit is shit, and please, you are welcome again if you skip the shit. So what was this article about, as far as I have understood there was a guy who made a silly programming error, then there was somebody who pointed it out and the first guy said shit, and then (after presumably 10000 words of softness) Torvalds said "SHIT" you damned primadonna. A rather soft expression towards a prick, or have I missed something. Anyway, you programmers of to day, If you want to live and learn software go and join the open source world and perhaps, if necessary do some work where ever, keeping you soul and beer on the table. And for primadonnas, they dwell further south, never in the north, or make Kimi a primadonna if you can, and sometimes with this northern inability to vomit lots and lots of words, "you shit" often works better and is shorter too.
"Seriously, what is so bad about the command line?"
Nothing, people who know how to us it will always (if available) use it when it's faster more reliable and especially if you can make or reuse a script. People who can use the command line have no problems using a GUI when appropriate.
People who do not know, probably work only with Windows, and their opinion regarding the command line is totally worthless, like having strong opinions regarding a language you don't speak.
So, in other words, the bad about the command line is that people who know nothing about it tend to express their worthless opinion about it. Omitting (then) the command line was one of the worst mistakes Microsoft ever made. They had the *nix world on their knees but they blew it and I still feel both surprised and damned happy about it. People working within MS then wrote about it and explained that the stupidity was due to the big boys considering the command line old fashion. Ha haa haaa. Still I feel like a traitor when writing about it. Keep sleeping MS. Good night.
"anal sex has been legalised". Sounds funny, legalised by who, as far as I remember, according to the Kinsey report every second woman who has tried it likes it. Disclaimer, my is out only. Wonder if this icon is legalised and why is this damned spell checker is against legalised too.
What the hell, I still enjoy being number 6 or 9 or any possible variation of any number. Where the hell did this obsession in finding smut in our bodies come from. From religion, of course, what is good for me, and sin, is very bad for you, especially for you. I cannot find any largely offending smut looking (without a mirror) at me, nor anything largely interesting either. Having explored a wife or two, not to mention all the girlfriends, I have found no smut either, rather astonishing and nice stuff. Something odd here, what if the British Museum decided to reveal all the "smut" in the stolen stuff from Egypt, I think they are called penises or something. Would that disturb me, probably yes, I am modern too, and size matters. But would not a more practical look at facts among priests and our religion have made male child abuse less common among the strong priests in their belief who find a cunt or the luck of one as smut.
Nobody is as obsessed with sex (smut) as the church, and I can understand the reasons for it but as long as it is like this, the church has to go as far as I am concerned.
Lets move the "smut" word into a more appropriate use.
And sheesh to my self but the damned logic is that if you hit your thumb with a hammer you may say sheesh but it would perhaps be silly to blame the hammer. Still you will probably rather throw the hammer in the drink than your self. Life is sometimes unfair for hammers windows and penquins.
"Which maniac thought it was a good idea to put XP on ATMs". Basically IBM as they gave up, lost the plot, so to say, for reasons I don't know. But again the way the OS was used and the way the "old" ATMs where designed, as the text goes "in the case of older cash machines still running (dead-man-walking OS) Windows XP" the problem would have been the same regardless of the OS. Nobody was then, long ago, prepared to back up Linux with any force, but with the same guys "designing" the ATMs the result would have been again the same. The fuck ups regarding Android is equally not because of Linux. There is nothing you cannot fuck up totally regardless of the OS.
Schoolkids given WORLD'S CHEAPEST TABLETS: Is it really that hard to swallow?.
Yes it was hard to swallow for Microsoft who wanted the One Laptop Per Child to be their own lucrative business and almost destroyed it. The opposition to cheap computers is largely related to the problem of making a $30 profit with a $24 computer. No surprise the Indian government understands they have to do that investment themselves.
And I do agree with this article.
Then there are those commenting on foreign aid to Africa seemingly unaware of the fact that we still take out (rob) much more than we return. And there are those who think that running water and similar will suddenly happen without knowledge and education, or that education will suddenly stop all progress in other fields. Makes me think of Gandhi who would probably have answered the question "what do you think of western education" with "what a good idea that would be". Almost just kidding you. And there was the teacher who, probably only wanted to point out that teachers are important too but made it sound like he was afraid of loosing his job because of computers.
Nice article but somehow I might have left out the last sentence "Even if what they come up with is nothing at all like ours."
Lets hope the new leader will lead the child abusing priests into prison, lets hope he will show the priests without women or children into onanating without the threat of hell, lets hope the new leader can move his church at least a hundred years towards to day, and lets hope he will eventually grasp the logic between a condom and AIDS. Lets hope, no matter how funny it sounds. Lets hope he will dress in jeans and run a bike, lets hope he will find a woman (not so sure about that, as women have a tendency of abstracting leaders, just ask me or Adolf). Lets hope he wakes up some morning questioning all the rubbish he is supposed to represent.
PS. Google, did the leader pay you for hiding the word o***''ting or is it a personal problem for you.
Yes I find Bill Maher quite clever too, if not always. And no, I don't and I am not and not that either. Things I have problems with is when he calls European countries socialist. European socialists, there could be some, would burst out in tears or throw chairs or something if they where accused of living in a socialist country. And there we have the American problem where everything is either left or right. The space in between, where all the common sense lies has disappeared. Good affordable education for every child like good and affordable health care for everybody and social security is nothing but common sense. After all, having a piss, insuring your house, changing the engine oil in your car is common sense too. And if you look at "Michael Moore - Capitalism A Love Story (2009) FULL LENGTH" I have a feeling that Moore has a bit of a similar problem. The magnificent speech by Roosevelt (in the film) is about common sense too, nothing else. I quite appreciate Moore too and Oliver Stone Neil deGrasse Tyson and so many more with common sense. l was going to write "with some common sense left". But no, some American readers might not get it right.
But I would like Bill to meet a deaf person once as he doesn't seem to understand why a TV program might have a text and sound in the same language. New rule, Bill, double check more.
"StatCounter is only slightly more pessimistic", why not rather optimistic. But I wonder how these two decimal figures are counted. I am fairly sure that none of my Linux machines has ever been counted as Linux. Nor have I filled in even one death certificate (to the proper authorities). What would the number of ppl on the earth be if we believed in heaven on earth. Does it matter, (tears running down my cheek), not really. Let the shit hit Windows and leave me alone as the numbers count according to MS.
A something man like you probably have children or grand children who need nappies. That is logic, get over it, you cannot hide. Still when I put Linux on a Windows machine previously used by my wife and using it now, YouTube keeps proposing stuff I never looked at. Also I am frequently asked to do something about my Windows machine as it's running out of space and guts, spooky. What makes me a bit sad are a few, god forsaken sites, where I have been, for years, the one and only first 1.000.000 human being to accidentally find them. Please somebody help them.
Hello Hanz, I suppoze you are German and zur commanze of the Engliz langeuage is from somethink like http://www.sfgate.com/comics/ck/Katzenjammer_Kids/2014-03-02
Still I am surprized you did not mention that Ferranti was the sonz of an Italiano.
What the hell (end of Joke alert), why the hell are we so unable to get rid of this mad sic and blind natinalism.
Looking back it's the reason for almost every problem and looking forward there we go again. Putin has managed to convince the Russians that the Nazi are on the other side of the boarder (a bit like Netanyahu).
Damn it, education and common sense, common sense regarding old books and cave paintings too. Are we not doing so well. Damn it.
I suppose Zuse was not a household name in Britain around 1940 but this is what the Wiki has on Zuse and the Ferranti Mk 1.
Konrad Zuse (German: [ˈkɔnʁat ˈtsuːzə]; 22 June 1910 – 18 December 1995) was a German civil engineer, inventor and computer pioneer. His greatest achievement was the world's first functional program-controlled Turing-complete computer, the Z3, which became operational in May 1941. Thanks to this machine and its predecessors, Zuse is often regarded as the inventor of the computer.[1][2][3][4]
Zuse was also noted for the S2 computing machine, considered the first process-controlled computer. He founded one of the earliest computer businesses in 1941, producing the Z4, which became the world's first commercial computer.
In 1950/1951 the Z4 was the only working digital computer in continental Europe, and the second digital computer in the world to be sold, beating the Ferranti Mark 1 by five months and the UNIVAC I by ten months, but in turn being beaten by the BINAC (although that never worked at the customer's site[10])
The Ferranti Mark 1, also known as the Manchester Electronic Computer in its sales literature,[1] and thus sometimes called the Manchester Ferranti, was the world's first commercially available general-purpose electronic computer.[2] It was "the tidied up and commercialised version of the Manchester computer".[3] The first machine was delivered to the University of Manchester in February 1951, ahead of the UNIVAC I, which was turned over to the United States Census Bureau on March the 31st (but not delivered until late December the following year[4]).
The UNIVAC I was the first American computer designed at the outset for business and administrative use
We seem to be rather obsessed with being first in one way or another.
