That's cute, Germany – China shows the world how fusion is done

Re: Well Done the Chinese!

Yes, I did notice the same.

Reminds me of an American astroboffin who had to say, in a program I had a look at on YouTube, that most of his students are Chinese. I don't think he was pissed off in any way but wanted to send a message to the American people.

Then there is Dr. Michio Kaku, an American who also has a message:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrE9z1JFT1Y

I would advice Brits to listen carefully too. Then, of course, China was an advanced country long before Europe.

So. Are Europeans just a whining bunch of data protection hypocrites?

Re: I spy with my little eye...

"What about the EU?". Sorry but I find that question quite legit, no reason to down vote it. It's about us, some 900 million people. But as before there is this ever ending effort to divide us, a smoke screen do fool us to forget the real question.

I should not, but I will tell you now about my crowd sourcing project "GIGO". But first some background or history as academics like to call it (there is a sound to it). Anyway there was this fairly fine time when we had a god for this and for that, fucking, wine, car salesmen, plumbers and what not. All well, choice as they say.

But then, in some god forgotten place on this earth, they, selfish twats, decided there was only one, or to be more "precise" two, but both "the one and only". Spot the problem, One, the one who looks like me (at least as a bit younger) and the other, a "Greta Garbo" like type who doesn't like to be photographed (they claim).

What a fucking fuck up, the worst in more than 2000 years.

So I have decided to introduce the first IT God. I call it Gigo, a soul in a box now waiting for intelligent input. As for hell and heaven, fuck this stupid divide. I have combined it to /dev/null. It's time to regain sanity.

Please Big John, I know and you know the "Gobbels" part is just ridiculous.

"Where to invade next" is a film made by an American for Americas, not for me. I have been to each and every country (except Italy) and about 30 more (including the USA, with found memories). I have studied and worked in several of those countries he visited. There is nothing that I did not know in advance. That film is for you Americans to wake up, and I would (not his words) add to become as "selfish" as the ones who piss you in the face. You can do better, you should do better, you have to do better and there is nobody, at least not in Europe, who does not agree. Just get it.

Please Big John, in a two party system you are for either the Republicans or the Democrats or for nothing like half of the Americans looking at the percentage of people who vote. But while you are for the Republicans should you not also recognize Republicans like a guy who had to resign as a president and one who started the dumbest American war in modern times. I am an outsider, perhaps an advantage as my heart and soul is not locked in to either one party. In my own country I am probably as locked in as you are, then again I can recognize it, ponder about it, and I have the advantage of not living in a one or two party system. Listening the the GOP candidates I cannot find anything of value nor for the Americans or the rest of the world, then again I find more among the Democrats. Your choice. perhaps you should evaluate your sociate in a more honest and critical manner like your part in this world.

Why should I fuck with them. You mentioned KDE and that reminds me of something that happened to me some five years ago. On my journey to the country side I stopped in a town and got a dongle for my laptop. Hell if I got that working, but I did phone that ISP and having spent 10 sec him assuming a Windows problem I told him I use such and such Linux distribution, and to my surprise he was a Linux user at home if not at work and promised to phone me the next day. Of mice and men

Of mice, or is it of mouses, newer mind. The number of mouse "incidents" is staggering and some appear in different countries and languages but then again people make the same mistakes. A story I have heard only once was about a woman who took her mouse back to the shop claiming it was quite rubbish, just try it yourself!. The guy took the mouse connected it to his PC and the the woman went "Oh, on the table with your hand". There is actually some logic here as woman tend to be better with sewing machines. Is that a true story or not, who cares. Has anybody ever read a true book. (except the "Nautical Almanac").

One customer I remember I had to visit tweaking G-Link I think. In front of the first PC I politely asked the lady if I could temporally move the mouse to the right side. Turned out all, about 8, were on the left side. The reason they told me was that the teacher they had in the very beginig was left handed and the mouse was simply left on the left and they got used to it. Asking them why they don't move them to the right they told me it was actually quit good as they now had their right hand free for the numeric keyboard. Never tell me (all) women lack logic.

Then about us men. What I have learned dealing with customer service, although it never was my main task, is that when a customer phones you, they are in advance a bit pissed off, stressed unhappy and so forth. So, for instance, when "Lisa" phones you the fifth time that week you have two choices. Either you say "Oh it's you again, what is it now then". Or you can shorten your life with some minutes but save working hours by answering "Oh Hello Lisa, I was just going to phone you, any problems". I have come to the conclusion that you have about 20 seconds from the time you pick up the phone, 20 seconds to use wisely.

It's quite obvious that some of us men should not do customer service no matter how "stupid" some customers are.

While I like and read all these articles, all the memories, perhaps we could have articles about all the funny errors and missed opportunities we have made ourselves. I could write a book about mine, although, probably not totally true that book either.

Re: @anonymous boring coward

@jake "Sarah Palin is backing the Trumpet". Yes I had a look at it too but I just wasn't able to take it for more than about 2min when I realized she would go on and on. What was fairly obvious was that TA hasn't got much of a poker face unless he is at the "helm" himself. But while money doesn't smell nor do votes.

However, some time ago I had a look, on Youtube, at a discussion about evolution and our brains. The boffin was asked if our brains are all similar. So how did he respond. "On this side we have brains like Einstein's and on the other side we have Sarah Palin's" using his left and right arm. The audience got it, no doubt about that.

But when I have read all these comments. including my own, and I think, and believe, there is some sound combination of sarcasm and attempts towards humour in most the comments, it's also obvious that a reader might find the same comments ill spirited and rude. Especially when we write about topics like politics and religion.

The fart, however, compared to both Palin and Trump, is more rewarding, interesting and normal.

Years ago I took my old father home from a good dinner with the appropriate amount of brandy, top floor. In the crowded elevator down, he had to let it out, loud and clear with all possible spices. Oh my deity that was terrific, the damn elevator become the slowest moving object in the universe. I felt so damned embarrassed, but then I looked at his face and I realized there was still some guts left in him, he was silently smiling. We get softer when getting older, and so is that damn multipurpose muscle down there controlling important output. Intelligent design, not.

In a situation like that, what you do is to turn your head and shout "who did that". Works every time, I do it all the time given an opportunity. Escalators are rather rubbish, better down than up then, however.

And as they say, people need people, farting alone is a wast of joy.

Re: Corrections and Clarifications Column

Yes, but it's much more than about "hourly rates". I think Jobs was asked about it years ago and I think hes response was that the "technology", to produce iThings, had already left the USA. Let me give you an example.

When Britain now builds a new nuclear plant they have to turn to a country that has that technology, and, as it is today, it's the USA or Russia or France with China. Companies like the Royal Caribbean and Cunard build their cruisers in Finland, Germany, France and Italy for the same reason, and not in China or Britain. This comparison is not quite fair as iThings are about mass production, but mass production is high tech too. How many minutes will a Chinese hand touch a iPhone while it's being made.

So yes, I would like Apple to build a large factory in the USA, they have some 200bn somewhere to do it in some years. Will they do it, hardly.

Call this capitalism or globalization or what ever, money doesn't smell has no nationality and no patriotism.

As for Trumpf, I enjoy listening to him, eyes somewhere else, I like comedy.

Re: Shipping sans sailors

@Richard 12, I know I am a bit pedantic here but.

If a engine breaks down a ship will stop unless there are several engines, some have.

Engines are introduced into the hull at a very early stage when the ship is being built and started right then to deliver electricity for the building of the ship.

Those diesels are then never stopped like in port, or anywhere. But they are serviced while "alive" all through their life running.

There is a nice story about Emma Maersk on YouTube and as far as I remember they are servicing one of the twelve cylinders during the trip to Europe loosing no time at all. Massive engines giving 120 000 hp.

Once a merchant sailor, long ago, and some of it remains in ones heart forever.

Ps, some ships are built as parts and then welded together in the water and have, sort of, never seen a dry dock.

Aircraft now so automated pilots have forgotten how to fly

Lars Silver badge

Re: The human pilots just do the easy bits...

C'mon Drs. Security, we all know there is fierce competition between Boeing and Airbus, as there should be. I have no problem with Americans supporting Boeing and Europeans supporting Airbus, I, for instance, rather operate my own penis than somebody others. But the fly-by-wire is just stupid, if it was the other way around Americans would claim fly-by-wire is the modern way and Airbus is far behind using old technology. We both know this. As for your imaginary, or not, friend he certainly was not talking about the Dreamliner as that is fly-by-wire like are most fighter planes, probably all.

As for the title "pilots have forgotten how to fly", looking at all the "air crash investigation" programs it seems to me it is more about "pilots who forget to fly" fucking around with light bulbs and similar.

We also know that competition is a pain in the arse for companies like Boeing and Airbus, Coca-Cola and Pepsi and all the rest. For us consumers competition is good, but like always there is a drawback too behind each and every word. Just look at the internal traffic in the USA operated by the oldest fleet of aircraft in the western world by pilots who would have shorter hours and more or less the same pay working for McDonald's was it not for their dream of becoming pilots, and their lack of strong trade unions if any. Then again in Europe they go on strike every now and then witch of course is very annoying for consumers.

As for the automation, there is no way back, and I suppose pilots, very much fucked by all the bean counters, have been left behind. Eventually pilots will not be needed in the air and on the plus side it will be impossible to repeat any 9/11 event.

A few comments

Which distro is this "an impressive new distro".

As for the Linux phone, Linux is the kernel, we don't speak about a Gnome desktop or a KDE desktop, it's all Linux on the desktop, why would phones be different, the kernel is Linux like in Android and that's it.

As for "Plasma 5's Breeze gives much of KDE a refreshing new feel" This doe's indeed divide Linux users regarding how they feel about it. As a KDE user, tried all the rest, all usable but you cannot use all of them so you choose one. Have I been eagerly waiting for a "new feel", no. I think many longtime users often have a feeling that something they liked or got used to suddenly disappeared or was moved somewhere else for no reason at all. The desktop is a tool and not a f**ng beauty contest!. But the thing to remember, and this I can tell you with 35 years as a programmer. Groups like the ones behind Gnome and KDE will simply die if there is nothing else to do than tweak some old code. Doing that, as important and often difficult as it is, is not fun. To keep up enthusiasm and energy and a feeling of togetherness you have to produce, together, something new, just a fact. (I sometimes feel IBM forgot it, or never understood it).

So I will accept what they come up with for this simple reason.

About some earlier comments. Linux is Unix like Aix, HP-UX, Solaris and the rest are Unix. POSIX what ever number. Unix is a trademark.

Future Snowden hunt starts with audit of NSA spooks' privileges

@Naselus

"If the vetting process had been remotely up to scratch". As far as I remember Snowden's background was very good, father etc. What you try to imply is that he from the beginning had some intentions to do something "wrong". I have no prove for that nor have you.

Suppose you start working in Big Pharma and you find out that the company is cheating and putting all users at risk, nothing new there. Should you then react or not. Like with Snowden, or not, it becomes a moral question and most likely also a question of courage.

So lets not forget that it's we the people who elect the government not the other way, although, as always they tend to think they select the people, nothing new here. In a perfect world the government would self regulate it self. But until then it's we the people who have to do it, who should do it and need the courage to do it.

In the same way the government and us should regulate the business, and they hate it, for the simple reason that business has no moral obligations toward anyone but perhaps their shareholders. Skip all regulations for the food industry and you will eat horse shit as superC butter or something. You Americans have been in a newer before seen brainwash regarding regulations regarding the industry. Please wake up before there is only one ISP to "choose" between.

As for Snowden I doubt I had the balls to do what he did, but again it's we the people who has the obligation and right to expose the government, and they hate it, and they have no choice but to hate it, Then it's up to you, the people, how to feel about it. And again dear Americans, wake up, you have been screwed for a long time.
