I agree on that, in addition this is not a USA versus EU war. There are strong forces on both sides of the pond who agree on these questions. Also it's not about a multinational company like Apple paying taxes either in the EU or the USA. They should pay in the EU for the profit they make in the EU and in the US for the profit they made in the world as a US company, in the US.

So how usual do you think this "confrontation" between Linux uses and Microsoft is. Is it not rather Microsoft that is confronted with something they so desperately tried to kill. It must be at least twenty years since I read about Microsoft guys who claimed the shell was "killed" on Windows because people high up in the organization did not understand why a user would ever need it and because it looked so old-fashioned.

What I was trying to add is that there are no better alternatives with big engines than Diesel. The technology to decrease substantially the emission is there and working. But as always you have to demand it, and as always there is a lobby weeping about how it is expensive and kills business, all those damned regulations. Nothing new there. Regulations regarding cruise ships in the Baltic has done a lot and there has been many tears in some eyes, as expected, but it has happened, and we consumers moan all the same as before, about those damned EU regulations and the emission.

I am not surprised if people get a bit mixed up regarding what Nokia is today as a lot of people believed Microsoft bought the whole company and not "just" the cell phone part, and the brand recognition was with the phones, no doubt.

Yes, it's not about the difference between Windows and Linux it's all about making a decision and supporting it. And by doing a more in house, like training, a lot of money would be saved. Will that happen in Britain, I have my doubts. France, Spain, Portugal and Germany can, for various reasons I will not hurt anybody with. Perhaps Ubuntu could step in with some support and a ready tweaked version. The biggest gains could in fact come from training.
@ Commswonk, I would suggest you try Linux first before you express an opinion about it. In reality it's damned easy. Most people get it in no time, and so would you if you ever tried, and all by your own.

The problem tends to be that nobody ever has the rights and the guts to actually force a real time test. I suppose it's as well that they don't do real time nuclear rockets tests, 8 inch floppy disks or not. What I have seen more than once is companies who think their backups are fine until they find out it's never tried and total rubbish for years (typically backing up stuff from the wrong place, that was the right place long ago).

@Archtech. While it's not uncomplicated to work out the costs it's much harder to estimate benefits. If we assume it's £170 million/week then that is just about 1% of the UK GDP. So does the EU membership contribute more than that 1%. I think so.
However, from the very beginning the richer members have paid more than they receive while the poorer countries have got more than they have contributed with. "All for one and one for all" and things like that, in the best British historical tradition, a British virtue if you like. To hope that every country was on the receiving side would indicate a belief in Father Christmas even as an adult.
I also live in a country that contributes, and for reasons you will have to work out all by yourself, if you can, I like that state to continue.

As for the "financials", is there such a word, The London Exchange and the Deutsche Börse already joined together and the Germans have a bit more than 50%.
