Shipping is so insecure we could have driven off in an oil rig, says Pen Test Partners

Mad Chaz

Well, not really. I suspect the rational for most of the info sec was "we're in the middle of the ocean, who's going to hack us?". Nevermind that the people on the ship are the bigger risk. That would cost money to fix!

When I got my new cellphone number, I kept getting treatening calls for the previous owner of the number. Things along the line of 'pay up or we'll see you in court!'

That I told them said name didn't exist at this number wasn't working. So I basically told them to 'put up or shut up and I'd be happy to have my day in court'.

Somehow, that stopped them dead after the first try.

Bell Canada hacked: 2m account details swiped by mystery miscreants

Mad Chaz

Bell Canada, where incompetence is the path to promotion

I had the misfortune to work for a Bell subsidiary in the past. The culture is basically "blame the underlings for the fact bosses can't even handle basic math like 2+2=4"

Boss didn't order enough material to do the job? Fire the poor guy doing the work for not finishing on time.

So not very surprising the security there is closer to Swiss cheese than brick wall. But I'm sure the person who made the decisions that led to this will find some poor smock under him to take the blame.

CIFS vs SMB

Not a mistake, but an update in terminologie.

SMB isn't the term used in linux/bsd for the OLD samba protocol. It is now called CIFS as that version of it had MAJOR performance improvements over the old SMB system. SMB3 is used for the latest version (windows 10 and familly)

Keep up the pressure on the telcos, Canada

Mad Chaz

If I drive about 10 minutes from my house, I could get fiber connection for a stupid high price that more or less as to include TV and phone and a data cap. At my place, I can barely get DSL from the phone network.

I could get cable, but then I would again be paying almost as much for just the internet as if I took phone and TV as well and have to pay extra for unlimited download.

Now I get DSL from a third party and get no fine when I download too much, just my connection getting downgraded in speed. Still crap, but it's honestly the best deal I could get. And it's not like it's just 1 or 2 houses on the street. It's all tightly packed all the way from the city center to my home.

Mad Chaz

"The industry-funded American Cable Association reckons the FCC's stipulation that Charter expand into underserved areas will bring competition that will hurt ISPs already in those markets."

You know they are a proper monopoly when the "big guy association" is scared of competition. They know they got no little guy left to compete with so it's all money out of big guy pocket. (Yes, I used singular, not plural)

I agree they should cancel that provision ... along with the entire merger. I think it's time to consider breaking them up again, not letting them re-fuse.

123-reg still hasn't restored customers' websites after mass deletion VPS snafu

Mad Chaz

My understanding from a previous article is the problem was with a clean up script. The script deletes "no longer used" volumes. Only this time, the script didn't delete "no longer used", just a lot of volumes.

That is what is used as "hard disks" for virtual machines in a VPS environment. So basically, the clean up script went in and deleted user data for still active clients instead of just ones that aren't active anymore.
