BT wins ad watchdog ruling against BSkyB's 'instant movie' claim

The Guv
Meh

Half truths.

I've got my Sky+ box connected using BT Internet.

Is it good - yes.

Is it fast - yes it can be.

Is it always fast - no.

Who's at fault - Sky and peering networks IMO.

The issue is Sky's service infrequently suffering service issues (through server or network links). I can normally watch HD content within a couple of mins but I have found several times (even outside peak hours) that it can be awful.

I suspect it's probably a combo of Sky's service and network peering links having issues as having tested my broadband line out when having issues it was fine.

BT Tower falls over, crushes X Factor hopefuls

WTF?

Not convinced....

My point is fairly straightforward - I didn't hear about any other channels having issues.

I am struggling to believe that there was a whole floor with an outage that only impacted 1 transmission.

The surge would have been huge to cut off everything including UPS IMO. I'm surprised there wasn't an electrical fire.

Maybe I'm just being a bit cynical...

Piracy may drive developers to "OnLive"

I can see console/games developers look to something like OnLive as a method to try and protect revenue streams in the future.

Simplify development with 1 system, piracy limited due to streaming nature of the product and potential to improve revenue generation without the outlay of creating discs etc.

Takeover - only if Sky is split!

I don't mind if Murdoch takes over Sky provided it is split in the style that BT has to work under (ie. Sky Retail for sat services and Sky Wholesale selling content to Sky Retail, BT, Virgin etc at the same prices).

If Murdoch gets Sky then the defences will be strengthened and this country will be pumping millions into a price inflated product just to get access to some premium channels. Already the Sky basic package costs £19 and for that there's only 2 decent Sky channels which have lots of adverts and sponsorships. It's £19 to subsidise free broadband and line pockets IMO.

Pro BT Grenade Thrown!

I can't get VM in my street - I am stuck with BT Broadband.

In the last 3-4years of online gaming I've never had an issue. BT BB is very good for XBL. I find it really surprising that VM have put gamers in the same bundle as filesharers. Sucks to be with them...

BT cheerfully admits snooping on customer LANs

The Guv
Grenade

Purely speculation and quite poor journalism.

BT take action to ensure customers are ok.

BT send out replacement kit (nice move).

BT check to see if new kit is used.

BT write to some customers urging them to use new kit (I know this as I got a letter).

El Reg posts speculative/negative story.

Given that the Hubs have a remote management control system to deal with firmware updates etc - then BT would have a list of customers to check. It wouldn't make sense to scour the entire customer base - just those in the BT Vision customer base which at the time they sent out the old adapters was around the 200-300k level.

I dare say if BT wanted to make checks they could but if it got out that they were snooping then the PR would be very bad. I think they learned their lesson after the hit they took for Phorm.

When I read this I just thought it smacked of an easy target rather than someone investigating what was sent/what BT's policy is.

Sony uncloaks first Google TV television

Alert

Wont succeed with our rubbish broadband speeds!

I think Google TV will be here sooner than expected.

It's how it guarantees delivery of service to the end user that's critical.

If it can't stream without buffering then consumers will reject it. For that reason I wonder if Google TV in the UK could end up being a hybrid that uses the YouView/Project Canvas delivery mechanism to get it's content ?

TV Replay is a pay service for a reason...

The opening comment isn't really much to do with the Sky Sports stuff but if one person moans... another will argue that they are wrong.

Pretty obvious why iPlayer isn't on BTV.

Vision has to pay its way. Letting spongers use the current infrastructure for gratis isn't good business sense and it's well known that UK ISPs are struggling to keep up with VOD. Imagine giving full iPlayer access to the ~450k subscribers overnight. Appart from hitting revenue it'll break some parts of the BT network.

As it stands (as a subscriber) - I think TV Replay is well worth the money. There's no worries about picture quality and whether or not it's going to cut out half way through for buffering.

The much talked about Project Canvas will deliver the free stuff that the "Sod That" poster wants. It is supposed to use a different distribution method making it easier on ISPs to deliver cost effective VOD. Till then - paying for BBC/ITV Player/4OD, Demand 5 on BT Vision - well worth it and the basic package is good value.

With Sky Sports added - fingers crossed BT will sell it at a good price and have some cut price offers.

BT could face criminal case over Phorm trials

The Guv
Grenade

Can someone on here actually say.....

They've been negatively impacted by the trial ?

Not once have I read any examples of "My life was ruined because BT ran a trial that showed me an advert for a pony instead of the XXX porn I'm used to"

BT got burned in the media, they backed off. Other companies dropped form too. Time for people to get a grip and stop whinging. Criminal investigations are just spunking public money over a bank account for a smug lawyer. Money that would be better used elsewhere.

Some people need to remove their head from their backside and stop forcing my tax money to be wasted on an investigation into a scrapped project that caused no real casualties other than BT's PR.

Handgrenade - cause those referenced in the previous paragraph will no doubt justify the waste of tax payers money...

Down side of HD calls - both ends need to be compatible for it to work....

BT could jack up line charges to fill pensions hole

The Guv
Grenade

Makes sense

If there is a proper set of measures put in place to guarantee a portion of line rental is directly put into the deficit with strict guarantees then this makes a lot of sense.

It will be cheaper to deal with this problem on a monthly basis than a government bailout.

Someone made a silly comment about BT just raising it's own BB cost and charging it's customers to bail it out. That's one sure fire way to make it worse. If more people left due to high prices, then there will be less money going into the company to pay the debt...

No matter what - you'll end up paying for it through tax or phone line rental. Get used to it.

Grenade - why ? Cause when there's a reasonable idea that if done correctly may avoid some BT pensioners keep their pensions, the haters explode.
