Software freetards demand axing of ACTA

Stop

@Bee. The problem is overuse and/or missuse.

Most of the time i see freetard assosiated with articles about thing like an idiot getting his machine infected for a file he got via bittorrent (I love bittorrent and never got a bug for it), and while Stallman has fallen from my grace for how he has been going a little overboard these last few years i did find it offensive. Please mrs. Bee, i am not telling you shouldn´t use the term, i find it quite funny and on line with el reg general editorial line, but try to focus it use on what the word (i think) originaly was coinded for, idiots who like to get this for free and get what they deserve for not being modicaly cautious.

freetard comes from free and retard, am i wrong?

WTF?

Yes, she is.

She is a cheating whore. And also stupid, oh and ambitius too. She is maried and she is a lier. If you want the "modern" aproach, ok, this is indeed the 21th century so open marriage is an option, but and "open marriange" where only 1 of the couple is aware of the openness is not.

If you like to fuk around without caring about your couple dont get married or marry someone who is like minded, otherwise you are a whore in my book, and anyone else with common sense.

They make an "educated" guess...

Actually it is a mathematic trick, sort of making up the numbers without totally pulling them out of your arse, since it is impossible to count the number of pirated OS or the number of pirated apps running on either legal or pirated OS.

For OS is relatively simple. You can get a pretty good approximation on the number of computers sold, either full or in parts, simply by learning the max number of motherboards (using processors would be trickier, since there are MB that support multiple processors). Since you know how many computers “may” exist in the market of a country, then all you have to do is add up all the known numbers for legal OS sold, preinstalled or in the case of distros like Ubuntu, how many downloads are there (you can even be more precise by checking how many computer download the updates for these OS as to prevent double counting people that downloaded the same system multiple times). You compare those figures and you get a good approximation of how many pirated OS are out there.

Now for apps, like games, is way harder. In fact the numbers are probably overblown by an order of magnitude if not more. There are only 3 sources to make the guess and all are way imprecise, 1 is monitoring traffic for downloads, witch with p2p programs is crazy; 2 is checking local authorities estimates on street sales, with is even more crazy; 3 is the estimates of a publishers for an app sells compared to the actual sells compared to the estimates of the people using the app, this is total BS from all angles. There is tecnic number 4… spying, but this is just as unreliable and quite illegal if I am not mistaken.

In conclusion, it is all pretty inaccurate, probably with an error way over 10% (I am totally making that number up, but who isn’t?). It would be sad if publisher actually believe it is thanks to their DRM policies that piracy “is picking”, cause is not, remember, all it takes is a single lonely cracked copy for the floodgates of piracy to be open wide, and it takes like 48 hours in average to crake the harder DRMs… so make the math…

I think you mean that climate change is natural and not related to human activity... since a relationship within CO2 and Climate does exist since higher temperatures wield larger amounts of CO2, or so the records show.

"Sadly" God's blessings doesnt work as magic would...

God blessing is a petition that has attached no obligation on part of the deity in question. This simply means that God may or may not bless the target; we "assume" the target is blessed but we have no possibility to be sure.

Magic on the other hand is supposed to work always if the rituals and power of the performer are "real" and correct and no “magical counter attack” is performed by other party, like what geeks out there can recognize as protective spells.

That’s why magic can actually be easily falsified while religions like Christianity and Judaism can’t be subject to scientific process.

rciafardone
Megaphone

There is where I disagree…

Script writers should forget about “familiarizing” the audience with the Dune universe, just write the story as it is in the book but cleanup up for the big screen. Do as Star Wars did on the original trilogy, give no background on chars or tech or situation just to give a frame of reference, is a waste of time an always does more damage than help. Let people intrigued (at least those who haven’t read the whole book series) about what the bene gesserit, the bene tleilax, or the landsraad really are or how they work, just move the story ahead. Is the script is good, the movie goers will care not aout these things… until they leave the theater and then Google it :p.

Your are reading it backwards...

If I say that something is happening, it is I who must show the evidence. Saying that someone doesn’t "believe" in AGW because there is no evidence AGAINST it is nonsense.

- Where is the hard data that shows that HUMANS are responsible? There isn’t.

- Is the World’s climate changing? Yes. It always is.

- What are we doing to ensure our survival when climate DO changes and crops around the World start dying for drought, too much heat or too much cold? Nothing, because everyone is too busy with the fucking fossil fuels, something that in 50 or 60 years will no longer need or have because it is not renewable. We should be planning to see what to do when freaking next ice age starts, not harassing governments and industries to make sure “BIG OIL” is stopped.

It is sad when scientist do their research with political agendas in mind instead of pure pursuit of knowledge, be it on the left o right of the political spectrum.

I assume AGW stands for Anthropogenic Global Warming. And indeed so far there are no real evidence that it is true. But since it has became such a popular topic in the mind of the general public now politicians are following suit.

The only reason Chine is still a developing country is because they are communist. mind you, only communist in the sense that the State OWN everything instead of no-one owning anything. Isnt that confusing? Anyway the China-Goverment is as capitalist as you can get, so much as to actually allowing SLAVE CAMPS to exist in remote areas of the country. Is a shit of a nation and i hope they choke in their own fumes...

That said i also think atht each and every nation should have the right to decide what to do and not do in reggard if the enviroment and international actors should STFU and get bent...

I kinda pissed off...

rciafardone
Flame

Sadly... No, they dont.

If "Environmentalist" knew ANYTHING about cost-benefit and energy efficiency then "bio-fuels" would never had happened, at least not the ones based on grains...

Sadly we are wasting our time and efforts chasing the "capitalist" polluters, instead of developing the necessary tech to survive the climate change, a change that will occur sooner or later NO MATTER what we do, because that is the nature of our planet.

Do we speed up that change? That hasn’t been proven yet and probably in a few decades we will find out we don’t. But even if we do, that doesn’t mean that the climate change will not happen anyway further ahead.

To repeat myself and be clear: CLIMATE CHANGE IS INEVITABLE.

We must start now to develop the necessary tech to make possible to grow food regardless of local weather conditions, unless we do that, our great global civilization will go down, either in a long hot summer or in a long cold winter.

Why isn’t anyone in the media talking about this possibility? You have stupid “greens” saying is our fault and we must all go kumbaya in the jungle and stupid corporate goons who said everything is ok, nothing will happen, lets just go as we are now, right down to our extinction as a civilization.

Combat walker machines: $3m for new studies

Yea, but they will still be alive

The point of this tech is to allow them to carry MORE that they ussualy can. Soldier should still carry the minimun necesary for survival. Plus a full sized squad would need more than just one of these toys. probably 4 or more. Another use for this toys would be to scout ahead and "trigger" any traps leid by the enemy. Heck if they are advanced enough they could detect them and dissable them extending their existence and utility, and in the worst case if they fail to dissable the trap and is activated no life will be lost. I think is a neat idea to upgrade humans squads with robot aids like these.

Water is not good enough.

Problem with water is that it will get "dirty" overtime and become conductive, also it constantly evaporates at room tempeture, so you would need sealed containers to prevent te constant lose, not to mention the inclease in humidity. Also is freezes at 0ºC and boils at 100ºC. Oil is much more reciliant to both enviromental low and high tempetures.

It will never work, not with current tech

The problem with flying cars is the same that with airplanes, you must check them continuously. If a car fails in the middle of the road you just stop and that’s it. The worst failure that a car can suffer is in the breaks or a tire blowing, and even those are not serious unless you are going at high speeds.

Trying to create a small airplane is not the right approach to the true flying car, even with a perfect computer assisted flight, the problem of the unexpected failures remains. The breakthrough tech necessary is something capable of elevating a mass and that in case of failures it doesn’t fall down, or if it does, it does it at a non lethal speed. Parachutes for the whole apparatus come to mind but they are not enough, they are complicated, also require lot of maintenance, and worst of all, time will damage them considerably.

A true “levitating” engine is necessary, and it must be such as that if power is off, its levitating effect doesn’t stop immediately, such tech doesn’t exist and will probably never exist, at least not in a size and power consumption level that will allow it to be installed in a car sized apparatus, which is the whole point.

I don’t see it happening anytime soon, even with serious scientific people behind it.

The great ‘build versus buy’ debate

rciafardone
Coat

Is there really a debate?

I am a developer and I really don’t see there is a debate. If there is package out there that does what the company needs for a specific task, you buy it, if not then you HAVE to make it. It is very rarely that a package available will be more expensive than developing your own. Of course THAT can be the case and then you have to ponder on speed of implementation and "adaptability".

As I see it, is not a question of which is better in general, is more about 2 basic things: 1) Do I have the choice to begging with?

2) Do I REALLY know my needs?

But this is not a debate. Is an analysis…

This will have two very humanitarian purposes, one of preventing them from feeling bad for missing (yet again) an end-of-warranty date for the World and more important, will prevent them from doing it again on the next doom's date, be it on whatever new or old culture it was foretold on.

Google countersues in Android Specht-spat

FAIL

You all seam to comment without actually reading.

Not all lawsuits over names are frivolous, there is a big difference when someone registred lets say “MADONA” as a name just because the actual star that uses that name hasnt openned the web site yet and what happened here.

Dave 156 is right. This is very cut and dry. If they were denied before in court – twice – the right to use the name because it was already owned -5 years- before by another person or company, there is no case here, Google is clearly on the wrong here, and it would be very bad if this time the court failed in Google's side.

If today, I plan to make a company, a program, a show or whatever, and I decide I am going to call THINKPOD and I register it, who is to say that I have not the rights to that name just because I haven't used it yet? What it the time that must pass for it to be fair game? 20, 10, 5 years? 6 month? Is not that the freaking purpose for such registration to have expiration date if not renewed? What is my project is a long term one and right now I don't have the time or resources to do it?

Google knew he name was not legally open for their use, they could have just changed it and no harm done, but no, they went on with it and now they face a lawsuit, a lawsuit that they must clearly loose, and badly I hope. Big companies have to understand that just because they are big and cool they can't go away with anything they want. Heck if they win I going to make my own little application and I am going to call it “Me&droid”, and I will not even bother to register it, lets see if they will not react to that.

WTF?

@Anonimous Coward (Who replied at Ben Smith)

Dear Anonymous Coward (the one that replied at Ben Smith), obviously you fail to realize the magnitude of the stupidity of what you just said.

Let check the list of crap you just wrote down:

1) Control ID by demanding credit card number to ensure the person in over 18 and has given his real name:

- problems:

a) So, I suppose a kid can't get his parents number and use it without the parent consent. How are they going to know it? Sending an e-mail to the account that that very kid supplied? Since most of this sites have no charge how is that going to be reflected on the banks account?

b) So, I suppose in your parallel universe, pedophiles neither can, under any circumstance get a CC number from a third unaware party, or use a fake name and data to get a REAL credit card to begin with.

c) So, My right to sign in on any of these sites has to be limited by the fact that I don't have a credit card... excellent for freedom.

2) Giving parents full access to “logs” and data and whatever from the site.

- Problems:

a) Why do you think parents will check this info regularly enough to do something about it? Has you seen the amount of info that is received in a single day by the average user of FACEBOOK?

b) If so, how do you know that once a “connection” between the victim that the aggressor is established in facebook they will not continue communications trough alternative means like another e-mail account, a messenger or just calling by phone? As they will SURELY do since they KNOW the account on facebook is monitored, and kids LOVE to let their parents know what they do. Do you suggest monitoring all this media too? How? China has an iron grip on communications , Google actually filters its content, and even the chinese kids get away with most of what they want on the net.

I could continue but why bother...
