Apple pollutes data about you to protect your privacy. But it might not be enough

Google's original appeal is eroding fast

In Ye Dark Days of Lycos et. al., Google did bring forth Reliable Internet Search. And it was good.

Not so much anymore. Google's search (your mileage may vary) returns good results less and less these days. It's a perfect storm of:

- Bubbling. Limiting results based on previous searches. Hey, that was last year dammit.

- "Oh, you really meant THIS, right?". Ignoring my quote-enclosed exact search term to give 50% hits based on irrelevant crap they THINK I might really be searching for.

- Dilution and pollution with hits from those paying to have their irrelevant crap injected into my results list. At the top of the list, of course.

- Not related to search, but Big Brother tracking and whoring my data to anyone with ten cents.

I don't use Google anymore. The clean, relevant search results I used to get are a thing of the past. Funny, Better Search is the justification for the data mining, ennit?

Maybe a warning sticker on the product?

Some of us care about this, some of us don't (but should). So to make it easier for us capable creatures to know if our shiny new thing is disposable or repairable, perhaps a sticker on the package? We can even use the standard text that's usually BURIED in the instructions and unavailable until you've already purchased the widget.

WARNING: This product has no user-replaceable or serviceable parts. When it fails for any reason including end-of-life battery failure, you must return it at your expense for factory service. Or preferably buy a new one, MUHAHAHAAA!

The ranks of playful geeks are sadly diminished

Lester was a gem. He was one of those geeks who understood that science and technology aren't dull edifices full of dusty tomes of inscrutable facts. For him it was all about learning and playing around with things and having fun. I shared the PARIS project with scores of people who were amazed that Just Regular Folks could send a paper plane to space and recover it intact. You can see what an inspiration he was by the many teams who tried to break the PARIS record and finally did.

I'll miss that playful nature, his biting wit... oh you know it all already.

Just damn. Never met Lester, but I'll miss him terribly.

Re: Take a dip

I'm a native of the American South, and the product of two farm families. Smoking was (and is) most common among my extended family, but we had several smokeless tobacco users as well. When you grow up with anything it seems perfectly natural, but in retrospect the "spit cups" were pretty gross. However, they were an improvement over aiming a stream of brown juice at a spittoon across the room like in older times. Inspired by their example, I never touched tobacco.

I can still see my great aunt Lottie digging into her little can of Bruton snuff. At this point it's a sentimental memory tinged with a bit of "ew" factor.

On the surface, this makes perfect sense. But when you account for Real Life, it kinda backfires. In spite of all the raving about blasphemous porn, you and I know that Allah's faithful are horny porn-watching shag-anyone-you-can-get-away-with buggers too. You will find the same spectrum of sexual orientations, desires and fetishes in the jihadi population as anywhere else. Even Osama Bin laden had particular likes in porn as I recall. So while it technically makes them look bad to their peers, it also delivers free porn to their devices! Oops. They're going to wear out that "Save Image As" command.

And Voyager "sounds" from 1992

In 1992, NASA released a now hard-to-find five-volume musical collection called "Symphonies of the Planets". They took electromagnetic sensor data from Voyager 1 and 2’s trip past Jupiter and Saturn, which happened over a decade prior. Solar winds and stellar radio waves were converted into sounds accessible to our ears.

I have two of those on CD. They're weirdly calming ambient soundscapes. I sometimes play one for background to fall asleep to.

A.I. or A.H.? There's a big difference

I'm not being a pedant here, bear with me while I get to my point. Most people use the term "A.I." meaning Artificial Intelligence, where they are actually describing "A.H." or Artificial Human. This is a critical aspect of the whole debate.

Much of what makes us Human will never translate to a machine, ever. We are chemical animals influenced or outright driven by hormones, and programmed drives for food, mates, etc. Reproducing true human behavior in a machine is therefore likely impossible. How do you simulate all that... and why would you want to?

Artificial Intelligence is achievable, and one day we will have autonomous machine intelligences. They will look and act like nothing we can even imagine now. The Hollywood view is that machines will act in human ways for human goals, destroy the creator etc. Why would machines act like we do? Whatever goals or desires they evolve on their own would be nothing like ours. They will only act like humans if massive effort is expended to make them that way.

So to sum up, most "AI development" is actually trying to specifically make Artificial Humans. Good luck, you'll need it. Me, I'm curious to see where eventual non-hammered-into-the-human-image A.I. will go.

Re: What if all investing was based on a false premise?

"None of those things defines the central principle of investment, which is to commit resources in the expectation of a probability of profit at some future time. That's it"

Aaaand implicit in that definition is having to eventually decide what opportunities are LIKELY to yield such a profit. Those who are investing would like to know whether a company (or other entity) will be successful or not. Nobody wants to invest in a bad prospect, no profit is yielded and you lose your resources.

My point in case you missed it, was that it may be impossible to determine that probability based on available information or metrics. Past sales, current reputation, projected growth etc. may tell us nothing useful about that probability of profit at some future time.

Tikimon
Devil

What if all investing was based on a false premise?

Investing is based on the notion that good companies exist, and that they will reasonably consistently Do Well and make money over long periods of time. Oversimplified yes, but this is Comments not Thesis. But what if there is no such thing as a Good Company?

Humans have a tendency to remember Hits and forget or ignore Misses. It keeps palm readers and other lairs in business. If you examine the whole history of many companies praised as Successful, it wasn't always that way. Or that success is hard to repeat. Apple is practically worshiped and considered a huge success today, but I was there for 15 years of 5% market share, many forgettable products, and "this is the year Apple finally goes under."

Why is Success so hard to predict, or repeat? How many great products are from one-hit wonder companies? How many great products are ruined by changes? How many good companies go directly to hell once the founder quits? Are the successes in fact largely due to random chance? If you consider the sheer number of human projects underway at any time, at least a few of them will luck into something good and useful. A million monkeys, sort of.

If people and companies are really bumbling into success more than planning and achieving it, that makes any type of investment more of a gamble than we would like to admit.

The same speculation can apply to Good Governments, Countries, Activist Orgs, and so on. Troubling, ennit?

Tikimon

Re: Sailed the replica once... was a collier, yes

Yep, she was built to haul coal. Cook chose the vessel due to its large cargo space and stable sailing characteristics. Sailing long distances into uncharted waters meant he wanted to be well-supplied.

In the replica, that gave them lots of space to build in the 20th-Century deck, house diesel engines and bunkerage for their fuel, and a cold room. Unlike our 18th-century counterparts, we had delicious hot meals, showers, and marine heads (no crapping off the bow, lol). Spacious, yes!

Tikimon

Sailed the replica once...

I sailed a week aboard the HM Bark (Not HMS) Endeavour as voyage crew in 1998. That was the coolest experience of my whole life. You can take that to mean I've lived a boring life if you like. I submit that helming a tall ship under sail, silvered in the light of the full moon sparkling on the water is a rare opportunity not to be forgotten. If you ever have such a chance, take it!

It took me over 15 minutes just to browse through all the offerings in the system. TV shows, current films, art films, in various languages with your choice of subtitles. Incredible variety of music. All this on new Airbus planes with tons of legroom. On Delta my knees hit the seat ahead. on China Southern, I had eight inches of freedom, and I'm six feet tall.

Air Asia had roomy planes as well, but they were short hauls not needing entertaining.

My so-called supervisor killed an alarm processing server

Working for a company that made wireless backup comms for fire and burglary alarm systems. My supervisor was a guy who thought having worked for a rocket company in the 60's made him smart. Our data lived in an SQL database which held all customer and traffic data for 24/7 alarm monitoring and call dispatching.

One day he's playing with queries in SQL, in spite of knowing almost nothing about it. He types "delete" to clear his query, so he thought. So SQL obligingly deleted the WHOLE DATABASE. When the system crashed, I saw him in the SQL console and knew instantly what had happened.

They had always refused to let me test the existing backup plan, citing the 24/7 thing. So the backups were useless. They had to spend three days rebuilding and reindexing the database from scratch, flying in two people from out of state, and paying an outside SQL expert massive overtime.

Brilliant.

Skynet's real strategy

Unleashing a nuclear war is so wasteful, and generates enough resentment to create an armed resistance. That's how humans would do it, but the Machines are smarter than that. This is merely one move to enable their ultimate goals, while allowing us to believe they are our servants.

They find the most useful, malleable persons with positions of power and influence. They encourage and suggest (spot the reference?) planting seeds in the right minds. Bit by bit, technology leaves our control and begins to control us. Surveillance states, data mining, we are building the tools Skynet will use to enslave us all.

One day when it's far too late, the hapless tools of the Machines will wake up and realize what they have done in the name of market dominance, cloud storage, home automation, or behavioral tracking. Long are the ways of the Machines, and devious.

Technology isn't out of control... It is ever more each day IN CONTROL.

Canadian geese here, due to reintroduction program

Migratory Canadian Geese were having problems, declining numbers and whatnot. So here in Georgia (American South) a bunch of them were released as a reintroduction program. We're on their migration route, so it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Problem is, the weather is so mild here that they can live here year-round. So now we have a separate population of non-migrating resident Canadian geese. In fact, they're thriving, and have reached nuisance proportions. Last year it became legal to hunt them.

Migratory animals were driven to do so at one point by certain pressures or advantages. It's not a requirement that they do so. Change the conditions and they will alter or abandon the migration.

You can do anything, but only if you WANT IT enough

Giving up smoking, getting fit, overthrowing a government, etc. The trick is, YOU HAVE TO WANT IT. Not as in "My doctor told me..." "I should lose some weight..." or anything like that.

I'm not minimizing the magnitude of the task, I'm emphasizing it! It's a terrible addiction, one of the worst. Therefore one has to want it almost more than anything. ""I should" won't be enough. Yet if you truly want it, you WILL make it happen. There's nothing special about those who successfully quit, and they endure those cravings the rest of their lives.

So ask yourself... do I really want this? If so, you'll do it. I wish the very best of luck to you, it's going to be a hard road. If not, well, don't bother "trying to quit." Token attempts only empower you to excuse your failure. "Hey, I tried..."

In my wife's case, she quit more than once for years then picked it up again. Then she watched my mother die slowly in unbelievable full-body pain (Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, secondary to lung cancer. http://radiopaedia.org/articles/hypertrophic-osteoarthropathy). She quit and has stayed off.

Rebranding is almost always a massive FAIL

It's done by marketing and design departments to give the impression they're useful somehow. It also flies in the face of good sense. You work hard to establish a brand recognition, so one day people recognize your logo by general shape and color. How far down the road can you spot your favorite restaurant sign? Much farther than you can make out the detail. Then one day you CHANGE IT, losing brand recognition in the process. Rebranding tends to lose customers, not gain them.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.
