Surprising no one, Google to appeal against European Commission's €4.34bn Android fine

Re: New search engine ???

"All that the court cases can do is to decide if Google or Bing is the dominant search engine."

I would say that the ruling against Microsoft for browser tying should set precedent here: upon first trying to search the web, the end user be presented with a series of search engines (in random order), and choose the one they want.

In an ideal world, there would be rankings for categories such as "quality of results" and "privacy" displayed for each as well...

What I would be interested in finding out is how much Google's search results for "Anthony Levandowski" have changed since (say) a month before this whole thing kicked off to how they appear now. After all, there have been previous reports of search results manipulation, and I for one would not put it past them to start serving up the worst dirt possible on the guy.

You're right - those things are not really needed for a happy modern life. But the fact is that the vast majority of people do use these things.

Given that we of the technical community are charged with the responsibility of leading the way in this field, the fact that there are so many who still quite happily use the likes of - and even advocate - Google, Facebook et al's services while whining about Microsoft's data policies and track record gives me a sense of dread. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

The "App Gap"

" A lack of apps ensured customers stayed away in their droves..."

Funny how people still pin the demise of Windows Phone on the "App Gap". Think for a bit - unless you have some kind of specialist area of interest or a specific game you're into, how many apps do you use per day on your phone? In my case, I know I'm normally in single figures, and two of them are "web browser" and "email client".

I would be more of a mind that Windows Phone failed because of Microsoft's utter failure to market it effectively, their continual switching of architecture and development requirements, and, above all, the insistence on calling it "Windows Phone"...

... okay, they could have done worse on that last point and called it a "Zune Phone"...

Re: say again, how are they dodging 30% apple tax?

"But never explains how fortnite dodges the Apple tax????

Probably because they're not. But that's not to say that they would not if the option was available - as you quite rightly point out Reaps, "Apple stops anything that attempts to do what apple does" - so unless you're willing to jump through the hoops of a jailbreak, there's no easy alternative to loading an app than via the app store.

However, this exact same level of lockdown makes it a lot harder for me to do something like creating a malware app, making it look suitably close to the official Fortnite branding, and floating it on the store. So security is not an excuse here, it's a fact. In fact, having made mobile games myself and seen how easy it is to put a fake app up on Play, I for one would feel more confident about side-loading an APK that I had downloaded from the official Fortnite site than hoping I'd found the right one in the store.

However, as the article points out, avoidance of the 30% "tax" is at least part of the reason behind the decision, as the CEO freely admits. And why not? It's just business - and like I said, I bet if the option were there on iOS, they would do the same.

To put a bit of context on this: in December 2008, a group of researchers found a collision attack on MD5 hashing that undermined SSL certificates in use at the time - in this case, a one week responsible disclosure period was applied.

So I guess either Google rate this threat as highly as the compromise of every web browser out there, or this is just sour grapes... and it's not like Google haven't got form for pulling the trigger on disclosure when it suits them as opposed to when is responsible...
