A rubber foot fell off, my country typically has summer days reaching 35-40C. Do they have spares? NO! You have to buy a whole new base cover - hardly a reasonable thing to do. (Rubber feet are excluded from any warranty coverage).

I live, voluntarily, in an 'authoritarian' country and I enjoy more freedom than any British resident. The British government has it's fingers and eyes in many more aspects of an individuals life than does the government under which I choose to live.
I can take pictures of almost anything other than pure military; I have never, ever, in 19 years been asked to identify myself; I have never, ever been searched (except by Customs and airport security) and the CCTV cameras than are present are used for traffic control (except in senior governmental areas of Ha Noi).
Labour also further diminished privacy by inter-linking databases so even very low levels of governments could access excessive personal data. Canada, on the other hand, has compartmentalised data so that only data needed for a government department's function is available and all other data is unlinked and held separate in other databases.
So Labour cannot claim anything other than the abuse of the British citizens privacy.

There is a secondary concern: the use (theft) of user paid communications. This could mean that a device left plugged in, powered up and not used still incurs communication use fees.

Actually web connected appliances, especially the high-consumption units, are likely to increase as the new Time-Of-Use electricity meters will want to have discrete little chats to dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, clothes dryers, water heaters, etc.

Whereas banks are now required to report all such transactions over $10,000 or which are otherwise suspicious.
The new rule would require banks to disclose even the smallest transfers.
I believe government's need to show some evidence of criminality before they are granted unfettered access to the private affairs of every individual or entity that dares to conduct financial transactions.

In my country of residence we can buy a promo SIM. Every month I buy a promo SIM for £1.62, get £5.19 total credit, and then I add £5 onto it, and I can use unlimited InterNet on a USB GSM modem. Great deal!
I dupe the SIM and can use multiple devices although only one at a time (no concurrency). All our cell devices are unlocked at sale - it's the law!
Given that pads are minimalist computers the add-on memory capability, connectors and interconnection become increasingly important. Sound is a good accessory.
The OS will also be a determinant due to the App availability.

The company I work for has now been working on pad replacements for some existing Human Interface applications and iOS and Android pads were purchased.
Without a doubt the ability to create our own applications, and retain control of them, has persuaded us to follow the Android course.
Apples decision to govern what their pads can run means we cannot use our application unless: (a) it becomes public or (b) we jail-break Apple products.
Since we want to use standard off-the-shelf products our choices are being determined by manufacturer policies.
I believe, eventually, this and App availability will determine the dominating OS and, at present, that appears to favour Android.

Just because Apple makes a lot of pod connectors which are of relative poor quality does not make it a 'standard'.
A 'standard' connector, such as Molex type, D-connectors, the North American 25-pair telephone connector, etc. are royalty free. Apple milks anyone who uses their connectors.
Apple had a magnetic 'safety' connector which they copied from Japanese rice cooker manufacturers. The difference? The Japanese version worked for hundreds of millions of cookers whilst the Apple version had problems.
The 3-pin connector commonly found on the PSU's of PC power supplies was designed by HP who donated it's exclusivity to make a real standard connector found throughout the world.
'Standard' connectors have to meet stiff criteria which Apple products can't always meet. Witness their burned connectors.
