At least Pedetrian texters usually only suffer embarassment

It.s bad enough having pedestrians walking around, texting, and crashing into sign and lamp posts, other sidewalk users and occasionally into the roadway but in the city in which I often find myself we have a motorcycle population of 4,000,000 (yes 4 million) and around 390,000 cars.

Notwithstanding the fact that if caught the fine can represent about one-fifth of a minimum monthly wage, everyone seems to answer their hand-phones within two rings and happily drive along testing with the left-hands (rear brakes) whilst steering with their right hand (accelerator and front brake).

Even though my set of wheels has a cell jammer, it is ineffective in stopping message entering, of course. I have seen all manner of collisions yet the plague of distracted drivers continue, in addition to the fact that most Vietnamese drive as they did when they only rode a bicycle.

The good thing is these idiots often get seriously hurt but at 13,000 countrywide deaths annually, it will take a lot of time to eliminate these cell users!

Whitman should know that 14 million Latinos reside in California; they account for 37% of the state's population; Latinos have the highest percentage of likely voters under age 35. That's a lot of people to upset.

Samsung backs Windows Phone 7 for the duration

Gates Horns

The question that begs an answer is: "Why?"

Samsung has pre-existing successful OS so why are they, and HTC, going to make handphones using that must be at least lower than the 5th slot on the OS popularity pole.

Could it be they all signed confidential contracts to bang out these losers or is the OS free or are they being paid by MS to make them?

ACER - forget them - warranty not honoured

ACER cannot be trusted to honour it's warranty, by personal experience, and even for a commercial customer. And we were dealing with a countries corporate office not through a dealer.

Their 'extended' warranty - something most laptop users should have - has so many exclusions to make it nigh on worthless.

A rubber foot fell off, my country typically has summer days reaching 35-40C. Do they have spares? NO! You have to buy a whole new base cover - hardly a reasonable thing to do. (Rubber feet are excluded from any warranty coverage).

Given that they glue aircraft together you would have thought ACER could make feet permanent attachments.

ASUS, however, do replace feet which is why the corporate office now has 163 ASUS computers.

Miliband retains Labour line on DNA and CCTV

JaitcH
FAIL

"support for DNA in policing and the role of CCTV ... 'casual' attitude towards civil liberties"

There is nothing so personal as DNA and Labour abused the process by retaining the data of people not charged / not convicted which highlights Labours attitude towards privacy.

CCTV is another abuse of privacy: the public is entitled to go about it's business without being spied on by faceless government people. I read a few months ago that few actual crimes were solved by the deployment of cameras.

Even the police are blasé about cameras, witness the assault on the woman in a Wiltshire police station by a Plod who obviously knew he was on camera. If it didn't prevent that crime (he was convicted) why would the Home Office think that the public be deterred?

Britain is a shadow of it's former self with government treating the population like children who are incapable of living their own lives without Big Brother (and Plod) telling them what and where they can do it, searching them contrary to law.

Labour, in 10 years of authoritarian rule, did more than any government to diminish liberty in Britain.

I live, voluntarily, in an 'authoritarian' country and I enjoy more freedom than any British resident. The British government has it's fingers and eyes in many more aspects of an individuals life than does the government under which I choose to live.

I can take pictures of almost anything other than pure military; I have never, ever, in 19 years been asked to identify myself; I have never, ever been searched (except by Customs and airport security) and the CCTV cameras than are present are used for traffic control (except in senior governmental areas of Ha Noi).

Labour also further diminished privacy by inter-linking databases so even very low levels of governments could access excessive personal data. Canada, on the other hand, has compartmentalised data so that only data needed for a government department's function is available and all other data is unlinked and held separate in other databases.

So Labour cannot claim anything other than the abuse of the British citizens privacy.

2 out of 3 Android apps use private data 'suspiciously'

JaitcH
WTF?

It's bad enough having the OS supplier having unlimited access ...

but having Apps access things for which there is no legitimate need for should be a no-no.

There is a secondary concern: the use (theft) of user paid communications. This could mean that a device left plugged in, powered up and not used still incurs communication use fees.

Whilst there is nothing the user can do about the OS/manufacturer data use, all systems should be equipped with OS features that allow users to determine EXACTLY which App has access to what data. None need access to cell phone identification.

Until this happens I will happily use my 'dumb' phone knowing exactly who knows what about me.

Metallic thread embroidered strategically on to under wear prevents governments checking out your assets. I use the Canadian Maple-leaf as there are many high coverage areas. The Union Jack has more see-through areas.

When the skin-radar first came out I bought a jock strap and lined the outside of the 'cup' with thin lead film. It caused a few extra questions but I was never required to remove them for inspection. The metallic thread works just as well and is more comfortable to wear.

You could even post appropriate messages to the perverts made from this thread on the wider parts of the underwear.

As well the Obama administration wants to require U.S. banks to report ALL electronic money transfers into and out of the country, a dramatic expansion in efforts to counter 'terrorist' financing and money laundering." Whereas banks are now required to report all such transactions over $10,000 or which are otherwise suspicious.

The new rule would require banks to disclose even the smallest transfers.

I believe government's need to show some evidence of criminality before they are granted unfettered access to the private affairs of every individual or entity that dares to conduct financial transactions.

And don't feel too smug in the UK, governments think alike.

It's time to take pro-active steps to make these characters work harder.

The ONLY good thing is that increasing government surveillance is actually counter-productive, as it swamps the governments with more data than it can possibly process and manage. Which is why the Detroit would-be bomber from Nigeria actually entered the US WITH A BLOODY VISA.

The true value of requiring back-door access for all InterNet communications is if you want to sift through communications in bulk, it's only going to be feasible with a backdoors.

Maglev: Devised by Americans; implimented by Germany and perfected by China

The Maglev principle was devised in the early 1900's by two Americans, Emile Bachelet and Robert Goddard. By the 1930's the challenge was being tackled by Hermann Kemper who demonstrated the use of magnetic fields to produce the advantages of trains with aircraft features.

For some odd reason, in 1968, Americans James R. Powell and Gordon T. Danby were granted a patent for a magnetic levitation train but I guess Kemper was history by then.

Research and development programs have been conducted by Great Britain, Canada, Germany and Japan into Maglev technology.

German Maglev technology is now speeding passengers between ShangHai Airport and downtown and further installations are planned by China.

The US might realise huge savings by having China do the development of this launch device since it is, essentially, just a short run, high energy Maglev system.

The US Military/Industrial complex only knows how to build things at monstrous cost with not always successful conclusions.

Perhaps they could develope a gun using the same principle so the RN could shoot anything to hand as long as it fit a barrel. A very Green solution.

Apps will be the determinant

The company I work for has now been working on pad replacements for some existing Human Interface applications and iOS and Android pads were purchased.

Without a doubt the ability to create our own applications, and retain control of them, has persuaded us to follow the Android course.

Apples decision to govern what their pads can run means we cannot use our application unless: (a) it becomes public or (b) we jail-break Apple products.

Since we want to use standard off-the-shelf products our choices are being determined by manufacturer policies.

I believe, eventually, this and App availability will determine the dominating OS and, at present, that appears to favour Android.

Sex Party proposes new classification system for Oz

JaitcH

This interesting proposal deserves serious consideration

I always considered the connection between nakedness and sex crimes somewhat tenuous and that Blair and Browns criminalisation of viewing, storage, whatever was a step too far.

If viewing/ownership of pictures of naked bodies was illegal years ago most of those in private, fee-paying schools ('public' in British parlance) would be in jail. I remember dog-eared books of naked bodies doing the rounds in the dormitories when I was at Dauntsey's School in Wiltshire and most of the students turned out to be a fairly decent cross-section of society.

Pictures od child abuse in any form should, naturally fall outside the protection of the law but should NOT be linked to a sex offender claim.

The pod connector ia NOT an international standard

Just because Apple makes a lot of pod connectors which are of relative poor quality does not make it a 'standard'.

A 'standard' connector, such as Molex type, D-connectors, the North American 25-pair telephone connector, etc. are royalty free. Apple milks anyone who uses their connectors.

Apple had a magnetic 'safety' connector which they copied from Japanese rice cooker manufacturers. The difference? The Japanese version worked for hundreds of millions of cookers whilst the Apple version had problems.

The 3-pin connector commonly found on the PSU's of PC power supplies was designed by HP who donated it's exclusivity to make a real standard connector found throughout the world.

'Standard' connectors have to meet stiff criteria which Apple products can't always meet. Witness their burned connectors.
