Sorry about data charges - I hope that includes global roaming

Local data excess charges are bad enough - the horrendous cost of roaming data while overseas is even more unconscionable.

Well it would seem they need to do it again -- it's been 3 years since the last sweep after all.

In my street I've noticed that over the years the open wi-fi networks have all been secured, so I guess Detective Superintendant Hay's comments back then have been taken to heart.

More branch closures predicted?

In Australia, banks love to close branches -- so some remote communities have no local bank at which to queue for teller service. This may let them close more branches and get around some bank charter clause like "must have a branch-like service within 500km of a client" or whetever...

110 in Spain should be better than in Oz

In Australia the distances are greater between cities yet the speed limit is 110km/h. Compared to 120 km/h that adds about 30 minutes to a 3-hour journey, or an extra hour and a half on a trip from Melbourne to Sydney.

And instead of Or perhaps?

Rather than changing the washer sessions instead of choosing to line-dry over tumble-dry, why not change the washer setting AND choose to line-dry?

Similarly, why not turn out more lamps AND turn the heating down a couple of degress whiles dressing warmer?

i.e. do these things have to be exclusive?

Mother faked ID to 'disappear' child from school waiting list

Skydreamer

How many other kids bumped from list?

For a good school with a waiting list I would think removing just one child ahead in the queue is not sufficient -- that does no good unless your child would then be in line for a place. There might have been more kids so affected but their paren't hadn't called to check on their progress...

"only barely won"? That's putting it mildly

I read Mr Fielding got 0.08% of the primary vote for his seat, and his party only 1.9% for all of Victoria. The greens got 4 times more votes in that seat but the "preferences" stuff kicked in, putting one of the least-voted-for candidates into the senate. Seems "wrong" to me. Just like a party scraping in to power with just a couple of seats more than the next guy and saying they have a "clear mandate" for something or the other.

Skydreamer
Stop

@LaeMing - Absolutely correct

This is the way many "mandates" have been claimed -- Labor/Rudd wasn't voted in in 2007 because of all the quiet things "promised" but some of the more emotive topics at the time, like WorkChoices and the general disgust/dissatisfaction with the previous government.

Both major parties are operating exactly in this way now as we approach the next election.

RC=Refused Classification

RC=Refused Classification -- i.e. in Australia, if a game is considered unsuitable for "mature accompanied" 15 year or older child then it is refused a classification and is effectively banned. Or for film, if a movie is considered unsuitable for an adult over the age of 18 then it is refused even the highest classification of X18+ (and so banned).

There are two sets of guidelines -- one for "film and computers games" and another for "publications". What category does the internet fall under? Particularly when some classes of "restricted" content can only be distributed in a sealed opaque wrapper.

Happy to make that clearer!

Finally my PC will be safe

I'm really happy now Microsoft is providing something to protect my linux box from all those Windows viruses.

But here's another idea to consider: How about Microsoft uses its next "service pack" to upgrade Windows to a Linux distro -- windows malware problem solved! and given Microsoft's market penetration not only will a majority of users upgrade over time, they'll be defending their actions to their Mac pals. Well it sounded good before I typed it out... oh well.

Oz bottle shop falls for 'double your money' scam

Skydreamer

Why double a lot of money, why not double a little money many times?

Why would the scammers have needed a lot of money just to double the amount? If the duplicated notes were perfect then they would have 2, then 4, then 8, then 16 (etc) fully formed notes to continue their copying from. The scamees initial outlay could therefore be quite low.
