Hey, I wrote this neat little program for you guys called the IMAC User Notification Tool

Re: No lineage?

I'm afraid you're wrong. PTerry did think of everything. What let him down was the finite speed of capturing it all on paper.

Re: Endless recycling

I also have that system. A kindly administrator bought me an in out pending tray. I sat it on top of the pile.

TRT Silver badge

Re: Been there. Done that.

Or "add another column" because someone needed to make more notes, until you end up at column FQ with sixteen columns added by sixteen team members each with their own opinion about which line item was in scope or out of scope.

How bad is Catalina? It's almost Apple Maps bad: MacOS 10.15 pushes Cupertino's low bar for code quality lower still

TRT Silver badge

Re: Catalina Beta....

Good point.Still it promoted good charging discipline.

TRT Silver badge

Catalina Beta....

The very first beta release froze a MacBook Pro if the screensaver ran for more than 30 seconds IF the unit was on charger / mains power.

That is more of an Alpha release bug in my mind. I mean proper paperweight type freezing that needed PMU reset to fix.

Catalina beta was a stinking pile. It has got better.

Remember the millions of fake net neutrality comments? They weren't as kosher as the FCC made out

TRT Silver badge

Re: why is it always

If only they did, it might counter the effect of this fake lobbying.

TalkTalk says WalkWalk if you've got a mouldy Tiscali email address, or pay £50 a year to keep it

TRT Silver badge

Thankfully they fixed the login issue I was having...

which allowed me to go in and change the password and autoreplies etc.

The account got pwned because their servers only accepted plaintext POP/IMAP/SMTP login credentials for years and years and years. Probably still the same, actually.

This won't end well. Microsoft's AI boffins unleash a bot that can generate fake comments for news articles

TRT Silver badge

Re: If you can't get AI to pass the Turing test...

Of course setting a higher bar would be "Did an AI comment make it to a Dave Gorman 'Found Poem'?"

TRT Silver badge

Re: Hmm ...

You forgot the multitude of possibilities related to Brexit. Though "I blame $EVENT" comes close.

TRT Silver badge

Re: I thought this had been done and deployed ...

Commentard badges require a new level to fit alongside bronze, silver and gold; tin.

If you can't get AI to pass the Turing test...

Try lowering the bar.

Re: For private individuals, 1 TB USB Drives

Ah but if you buy a shedload of TB drives, you're paying for empty bytes to just sit there unused whilst with Microsoft's offering you're.... ah. Scratch that thought. You're paying for empty space that they can sell to someone else.

Hands up if you reckon they could provision the full 2TB for every subscriber if they all demanded it simultaneously,

Good point, fibre's probably better, in fact.

TRT Silver badge

Re: You do notice the cheap cables..

100m with HDMI??!! You'll be lucky! Best off using a convertor HDMI to Cat6 and back.

TRT Silver badge

Re: You do notice the cheap cables..

Yep. I had to get a 15m plenum rated HDMI to go up to the overhead projector because the suspended ceiling is about 3m below the real ceiling, and we weren't allowed to run the cable in a tray lower down because of something or other. Even the best HDMI cable (the ones that Kramer use) still ended up needing a signal regenerator after about 12 months of the cable being in place (dirt accumulating perhaps, or shielding starting to spread after a year's thermal cycling, who knows?). Without the regenerator, about a quarter of the computers that people tried to use ended up with picture breakup and loss of communication.

One wonders if the system is intrinsically racist, ageist or sexist as per usual with these systems. I mean, it apparently matches a template based on previously successful employees. Did any of them have a stammer, for example?

Re: "In doctors, you might expect a good one to use more technical language"

We also have those. We just call them sub-clinical neuroses.

TRT Silver badge

Re: "In doctors, you might expect a good one to use more technical language"

A good Doctor Who tailors their speech? When talking to an artificial intelligence? Let's think about that for a moment...

Computer interviewer: "Please tell me more about yourself..."

Doctor: "If I were to tell you that the next thing I say will be true, but that the last thing I said was a lie, would you believe me?"

Careful now, UK court ruling says email signature blocks can sign binding contracts

TRT Silver badge

Re: Buy a boat

Whatever floats your boat.

TRT Silver badge

Re: So folks will be adding

Read the content of Section 2 of the Act. The contract can be signed On The Behalf of a party. I'm surprised that they didn't argue that the email was only one half of the contract. Unless the other solicitor emailed back to say that their client accepts the terms and also included a signature block.

TRT Silver badge

Re: Subject to contract?

And the point is that this IS the contract.

Re: A bad day for democracy

If the prime minister cannot be over-ruled concerning an action that suspended parliamentary scrutiny of their actions and those of the government, then it is absolutely the END of democracy, and would establish a very dangerous president.

She doesn't want to be a politician...

The men who come to me say, “So and so wants to declare what we call ‘a war.’ These are the facts, what do you think?” and I say. Sometimes it’s a smaller thing. They might say, for instance, that “a man called Donald Trump is President but he is in financial collusion with a consortium of high-powered Russians who want him to order the building of a wall because of some sort of social media experiment…

Hoist by his own leotard was that?

Petard. French for "fart". The word was lent to a small explosive device used to lift a door off its hinge pins rather than blasting through it.

TRT Silver badge

Re: Ignorantia juris non excusat

Understanding politics through the medium of Dr Who.

Lesson 1. Judging the actions of a Prime Minister.

There is a distinction between an illegal act, such as murder, and an unlawful act, such as making things up to get your own way.

I mean, if Boris had just gone into Number 10, called a cabinet meeting, declared everyone there to be a traitor and then killed them all, it would be illegal, right? Whereas if he were to lie in order to further his own cause that would be unlawful, but not necessarily illegal.

TRT Silver badge

Re: The Irish reunification question is complex and not an easy thing to achieve ...

As a great man almost said once:

"The reason for my coming here has never been more clear. The union of the Northern Ireland and the Irish people will not be achieved by politics or by diplomacy, but it will be achieved. The answer has been here before us all along. An inexorable evolution toward a European philosophy has already begun. Like the first Europeans, these people are struggling toward a new enlightenment; and, it may take decades or even centuries for them to reach it, but they will reach it, and I must help."
