IPv4 is OVER. Really. So quit relying on it in new protocols, sheesh

TRT Silver badge

Um... because the Internet is not just IPv6? What grounds would they have for that? If IPv6 were a selling point, then you can bet your arse that it would be appearing in the adverts. Hell, they'll make up technical stuff just to sell something, pro-vitamins and probiotics and synergistic omega 3 complex oil hydrating compound...

We've already got BT's Superhubs, BT Infinity and Virgin's DOCSIS3 advertisements.

They'll wake up when they decide to wake up, and when they decide they can use it to distinguish their product from every other bugger's product.

Re: Where I am working right now

What? I have great difficulty reading IPv6 addresses in some of the miniature typefaces knocking around nowadays. All those contiguous colons are hard to read.

Re: Where I am working right now

Because of IPv6's colon cancer.

True. The latest PHP parser is, by the looks of it, the "best". Though I note it has the most "expected result", but if the specification is so lax, that I guess the expectation is HIS expectation. I'm willing to lay money on him being a cut and dyed brought up on PHP coder.

Mine is on serial incompetence...

Serial's too slow. I think this was parallel incompetence.

TRT Silver badge

Ah... so...

there might be a few more redundancies coming? Or sackings at least.

TRT Silver badge

I think the various virtual machines were backed up a machine at a time according to a strategy particular to that machine and its function. So, for example, and the strategy may well in actuality be different, HR, finance and student records systems would be backed up daily in their entirety, whereas the shared drives and old, semi-retired webpages on an image of an ancient server would be backed up incrementally with a full image every month or so.

I also think the RAID was many more disks that just two. Probably 24 disks arranged as a whole load of RAID 5 volumes, but the volumes spread out across the whole 24, which would effectively make it a very bad system indeed. I can't believe anyone would do that, TBH. Not being au fait with the system itself, I can only guess.

TRT Silver badge

On the bright side...

A year or two down the line and KCL will have the most failure resilient, attack hardened, double-quadruply redundant IT system in any UK university. OK, there might not be any IT budget left...

Facebook ads in race claim

TRT Silver badge

What the f*** does Facebook et al think it's doing...

storing details of race anyway? Do I get 'labelled' as black because I searched for grape soda? Or because I joined a BME interest group? Or did I voluntarily give away my race in some sort of profile completion exercise? I don't use Facebook, so I don't know if that's even a thing - it just seems odd to me that they can even offer race as something to be targeted for advertising. What marketing category do I shift into when I start searching for heavy duty tin foil headgear?

Apparently Google, going off the ads they squeeze into the pages I view, seems to think I'm a black knitting enthusiast with a penchant for heavy duty drill bits, peonies and Doctor Who. They are only partially correct.

But the practical use...

relies on a secure communication between Alice and Bob in order to exchange K. If one assumes Eve can hear everything Bob can, then Eve would be as efficient as Bob in decrypting P. And if you have a secure means of exchanging a fresh K for every P, then when not use that means for transmitting P? Or do you train Alice and Bob in isolation, then effectively lock K at some point in the future before you separate Alice and Bob?

You shouldn't be upgrading a production server online anyway. You need an off-line mirror. You upgrade them alternately and give them both the same input and check their output is the same. Then, after your defined soaking-in period, you swap the primary and the secondary around. Rinse and repeat. OK, that's probably overkill, but it's amazing just how business critical some IT is nowadays.
