iPhone mag-stripe reader stalled

Robert von Knobloch
Stop

@Fraser

Nice, if it were true.

Here, in Germany, we are still mag-stripe based. Most 'credit' cards don't even have a pin.

(Credit cards here are paid automatically from your bank account on the due date - so are not really credit cards, but are Visa, Mastercard etc.).

I don't know if you are perhaps from across the pond (and can be excused for imprecision), but Austria is South EAST of Germany. At least when I last looked.

ODF's doomed mission to break into Microsoft Office

Robert von Knobloch

MS and Compatibility - we've heard of it !

Some numpty sent me a 'docx' file. Having 'only' XP with Office 2000 (and, of course Linux with OO 3.2), I opened it with Open Office. It worked mostly but there was a graph that did not display properly. Oh well, search for MS' viewer for these docs and load it onto the XP machine (it's only there for 1 app. that cannot run under Linux - grrr). Surprise! MS' viewer also could not render the same graph.

Conclusion - if you want to be more compatible (even in an MS-only environment), choose ODF every time.

Must be exceptional software

If it delivers 'faster hardware' !

Is a motherboard included in the shrink-wrap then?

I assume that if UAC is no longer there then Microschrott have give up completely on any idea of security.

Well that's another reason not to go there.

Small digited Swiss numberplates

As a Brit living in Germany close to the Swiss border, I can definitively state that the Swiss have the number plates with the smallest numbers and letters. All Europeans now have harmonised (more or less) number plates, so that the digits are all of a similar size (Germany, France, Spain, UK etc.). The Swiss, not being in Europe, don't do this. Their digits are even smaller that those found across the Atlantic (as I recall).
