REVEALED: Apple fanbois are 'MENTALLY UNSTABLE' - iShop staff

FAIL

Title is "Entitlement"

Post occupy moment, entitled people are the favrourite punchbags of the world. It's easy to paint someone a villain by just calling them entitled. My own entitlementdar is up all the time and whenever I see someone moan about lack of froth in their coffee, I think "entitled"! Even my office has an (employee driven) internal web page called "first world problems" to keep us honest about our own entitlements.

But what is the meaning of entitlement when a customer who (over)paid for their gizmo wants to understand what it's capabilities or the terms of the deal ? Or, do they keep pestering the "geniuses" about how the iShiny thing will not bend ?

Unless someone explains this better, so far the person who is coming off as "entitled" is the iGenius who expects to get paid a decent salary but finds dealing with customers unworthy of their time/effort ?

Resrachers tend to over-sell their findings.

The motivation is not always money. Sometimes it's fame. Sometimes it's simply the satisfaction of the feeling that they did something big. For example:

  • Climate scientists would like us to think that global warming is end of the world. Maybe they are right, maybe not. Regardless of your political views, you know that there are bound to be bugs and assumptions in any modelling. And with time the models would usually get better. But one thing is for sure: original models were inferior to present ones. But instead of fixing the issues, they rushed to extrapolate their findings to the worst case scenario too soon, giving ammunition to affected parties (Oil) to start a slander campaign and FUD. Now the whole thing is so political that it's impossible to judge a research on the topic without biases.
  • With palaeontological discoveries the stakes are usually lower, which makes the likelihood of the team claiming that's the "game changer" without putting in sufficient rigour is higher.
If you carefully read the linked in original article, in it's current form, it's simply full of exaggerated extrapolations and speculations without much corroborating evidence (aka "science"). Maybe they are right, maybe not. It's hard to say at present.

Re: a study from Canadian health researchers

Your comment is mostly fine except the "statistically quite small group" bit. A 1000 is a pretty decent sample, as long as its representative of a larger population (eg: no "internet surveys"). The (arguable) problems with this study are:

- Self reported unverifiable data.

- Causation/co-relation yada yada. Maybe people who are "about to get" cancer don't feel like sleeping around.

- Jumping to a populist conclusion they wanted to arrive at.

One could easily conclude that people who boast about their conquests have a lesser likelihood of cancer. Or, male researchers likely to find reasons that justify their fantasies. Or, prostrate cancer makes you too tired to go out at night. Or, people living in cities less likely to get prostrate cancer. Or, people who have prostrate cancer think less about sex. Add your own conclusion here.

Re: Average?

> If a company promotes preening dummies far beyond their true level of competence,

> then it is the owners who lose out. There's no need to have Government controls on this.

In an ideal world, yes. But remember owners are represented by board.. and boards hire from the old boys network for the top jobs. Boards pays them well not just for competently heading the company but also to earn their loyalty and currying favours.

Yes, employees can always leave in theory, but how many times have you seen employees leaving because their CXO is getting an obscene pay ? In a large enough company (>10k employees), the damage per employee is usually < 1% which is easy to ignore - if you never received it in first place!

And regarding dummies: leadership comptency is not really a black and white skill like coding. Some leaders have their own vision and drive (Jobs, Schmidt, Musk) which can result in unprecedented wealth creation but at the same time they can easily run a multi-billion dollar business to ground by making high risk calls that align with their vision (Elop). OTOH, a play-safe dummy can either choke the company in the long run by failing to seize opportunities (Hurd). Or maybe our dummy recognizes their limitations and relies on a smart group of advisors to grow the company in a sustained manner (Dell).

PS: Free market is the most successful economic model, yes. But once you start treating a theorectical model like your relegion, you get fat bankers gambling away the world's wealth on even fatter CEOs....

Re: Unbundling required in the US

Usually there are alternatives to comcast, specially in areas where comcast has bothered to offer a 50mbs line. I use my locally grown ISP for organic interwebs access.

  • Internet @ 100mbps: $50/mo
  • Netflix: $8/mo
  • hulu: $8/mo (seasonal)
  • Willow TV : $15/mo (seasonal)
  • + HBO: $10/mo (will probably turn off netflix)
  • Indoor antenna for over-the-air channels : $70 (1 time)

So for a similar cost, one gets a genuinely faster internet. And a much greater control on content: seasonal subscriptions + anytime watch + any device etc. I know brainiacs at comcast have tried to address the flexibility issue via xfinity, but it's not on all devices and still requires that ugly cable box in your living room, which if you are renting is $8/mo extra with a potential fine of X00.00 dollars, if "you" lose it when you end your subscription.

Re: Hmmmmm

Freezing Egg is a choice. It's a technology that was always available, which is now it's subsidized by your company. I see little wrong with anyone making that choice as long as its deemed medically safe for the new borns. While you and I can always question another person's priorities in life, but then aren't we all snowflakes ?

But the big problem I see (and I guess that's what OP is alluding to) is for the employees who do NOT elect this option. Now their bosses can say, "Hey, you are fired/demoted because you did not elect the company-provided-procreate-later option". Or, even worse, suddenly the media would label women who do not chose this option as "holding back progress".

A slightly better way for this provision would be: (1) The eager companies should cover this under the medical insurance plan. And do it quietly without talking about your employees' unfertilized eggs in the media. That way, it stays a "personal user choice" and the "employer" is out of the equation. (2) Media should avoid a "manufacturing consent" drive to make this the "progressive choice".

But I get a feeling that you are not really interested in noise cancellation and it's not really about that flight. Maybe too many shares of kid achievements on facebook by smug parents who show-off their spawns just like, zOMG, their iPhones ? Or, an over-bearing aunt who keeps pestering you to have kids ? I know things are strongly labelled in US.. you could either be a family-loving-god-fearing-conservative or a workaholic-single-liberal. Or "a trekkie" or a star wars fan. A nerd or a jock. An alarmist or a denier. Or, "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem" mindset, if you may.

An in-between stance is simply a show of a weak character. Slowly, your victories become primary and happiness is just a distant secondary goal. I know, for I've been there but since nobody really takes life advice from the forums section of the interwebs, I'll just shutup.

Re: Bias

Thanks OP for making me re-read. On my first glance of the article, I thought it was yet another butthurt n00b on lkml, that el reg is having fun with. But looks like he thinks he is OK with the harshness but probably people from other cultures are not. Pretty sure that the reference to "saving face" is directed at Asian cultures.

From what I've been told, in the US offices of Sun and Microsoft, about 30% of the OS devs were of Asian origin. My SWAG is that this ratio in the Linux community is much lower (< 5%). In theory, it should be higher because they don't need work visa to contribute to Linux, but maybe it's lower because they don't see themselves "fitting in" ?

PS: how many people are fine with Steve Jobs/Ballmer running their companies like a dictator but not when Linus does it ? (Or the other way round).

3) Splits are done primarily for shareholders, not for consumers or employees - so they can decide with greater control what they are buyng for 1 dollar. Autonomy is just a problem to be solved.. only question is what is the cheapest way to do it.

4) And for hopefulls, let me be the bearer of bad news - in all likelihood Autonomy is already dead. (Maybe someone still workingthere can confirm).

Re: Fecundity?

It's something I've heard about higher latitudes (except in Alaska)! Oh, what I would've given for this knowledge in the prime of my youth!

It could be ovulation related; but maybe something as simple as people are out more, mingling with others in a generally cheerful atmosphere with the knowledge that clock is ticking and you need to squeeze in as much fun as you can. Stew the pattern over centuries and it becomes part of the culture (which probably explains the Alaska exception).

As far as the meaning of the aid goes, it's simply a way for nations to lubricate future trades and relations. Unless you are paying for a major portion of a nation's budget, you have no say on how they run their country (ie based on the aid). Think of it as 100 quid that your rich neighbour puts in your birthday envelop. Maybe he hopes to boink your mama in future, but that doesn't allow him to question how your house is run.
