HDMI, thy end is near: Qualcomm's Wilocity gobble will let mobes, tabs beam 4K vid to TVs

Paul 98

I can't wait

I want a desk with wireless power built in meaning I only need one power cable plugged in to the table and this will power both my monitors, laptop, phone etc and with this wireless display there will be no need to have extra cables for each screen. Just pick what monitor / TV you want to send the output of your phone / laptop to and it receives it. Couple this with wireless keyboards, mice, wifi etc you have a very uncluttered flexible and mobile environment. No more messing around plugging things in and out sounds great.

Hello Moto... It's the Nokia Lumia 630

Paul 98

how does this compare to phones from a few years ago?

I have a SGII that is over 2 years old now, how would this (and other current budget phones) compare to flagships from a few years ago? (I'm not interested in the camera performance)

Spend zero notes to take all notes with OneNote: Microsoft makes app free, builds it for OS X

It's growing on me.

Best thing I've found so far:

Copy a screen shot in to OneNote, right click -> "Copy text from image"

Totally awesome!

I like it. Slightly Aston / Volo front end and slightly Jag XF from the side / rear view. A very smart and tidy car and a lot nicer than any recent German car. I'd have one.

How do you even pronounce "Diaspora"?

Dia-spora?

Di-aspora?

Dias-pora?

It's just a stupid name and will suffer the same fate as Linux on the desktop for the same reason - noone wants to learn the stupid names of the applications.

Insecure

So there's no way to ensure this works over SSL presumably. Simply intercept the mail, or get into their mail box using stolen passwords from any number of the recent hacks (Sony PSN etc) and you can then login to any account someone has.

Mozilla cranks out Firefox 5 with cross-platform 'Do Not Track' feature

I like it

Installed it last night and at work this morning using the auto updater. I like the AppTabs already.

There's an interesting article on Coding Horror about how Chrome is making version numbers irrelevant.: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/05/the-infinite-version.html

I tend to agree with it, although initially it didn't sit easy with me.

FF5 hasn't broken any of my plugins.

Ten... DAB kitchen radios

Paul 98

The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.

I bought one of the Sony XDR-S100CD a year or so back as a present for the missus who wanted a DAB radio for the kitchen with a CD player. I think this was the only one I could find that had FM / DAB / CD. Compared to the prevalence of FM / AM / tape / CD combo players, DAB radios seem to be one trick ponies most of the time.

It is a nice unit and works lovely in our kitchen. The price is prohibitive for mass adoption but hopefully the unit will last long enough for it to be worth it.

Paris Hilton

Standard fingerprint please!

I wish they'd implement a feature where you can set the fingerprint of the browser to the the same as everyone else thus stopping the way people are really tracked.

Paris because she knows a thing or two about being fingered.

Cookies aren't the real problem

Good on MS for doing this. Personally I've set FF to delete all cookies on exit and use other plugins etc. But anyway, the issue is not cookies. They're fairly easy to deal with by just deleting them, manually if you have to, or automatically, whatever.

Even if you have no cookies or any other identifying file on your PC (flash files etc) you can still be tracked using the information your browser sends to the sever alone: User Agent, plugin details, installed fonts, time zone, screen resolution and colour depth etc all combine to provide a fingerprint that is unique enough to identify you, especially when combined with an IP.

See how unique you are: https://panopticlick.eff.org/

Even if you disable java script you can still be tracked with a fairly high degree of accuracy.

And even if you manage to disable all of that data being sent by customizing your browser and changing non standard settings or compiling your own, well you can still be tracked because 99.999% of other users don't have blank data for these things - you're unique in sending no information.

Finally

I can't believe it's taken so long to get hardware graphics acceleration into browsers. There are plenty of sites that will take advantage of this and I think it will make a big difference. That 1GB DX11 card is making sense now. Personally I don't care if you're using Linux or some other platform that doesn't support hardware acceleration. Frankly if your platform doesn't support that then it's a rubbish platform.

Two convicted for refusal to decrypt data

Paul 98

claim it's not an encrypted file

Would it be plausible to claim that it just isn't an encrypted file? Just claim it's a dump of random data from /dev/random or something? Then it doesn't have a password to hand over it's just random data as far as you know. Don't even claim it's a TC file.
