Re: anti-Apple (fanboi) sentiment

” You *do* remember your original point, don't you? In case not, it was: "because hiding inside every anti-fanboi of company A is a fanboi of company B." “

Actually my original point was “The negativity, bitterness and anti-Apple sentiment in this article absolutely ruins what could have been an interesting piece.”

Does selective reading run in your family, or are you just special?

” you were clearly struggling with the idea of anything like a spectrum.“

*I* was clear. You, on the other hand… well. Do you know the expression ‘when in a hole stop digging’? Or ‘Better to stay silent and be thought a fool, than speak and remove all doubt’?

Back to the drawing board old chap.

Re: anti-Apple (fanboi) sentiment

” You must know a very weird subset of humanity.“

Name, show or point me to one single human who doesn’t like or dislike ANYTHING.

”And "liking something" does not mean you are a "fan" of it (the other way around, yes); and being a "fan" does not meany you are a "fanbois" (the other way around, yes).“

Fan noun to admire, be enthusiastic or think positively.

Again. Point me to ANY human being who has EVER lived, who has never admired, been enthusiastic or thought positively about something.

” The world and "defining aspects of Humanity" (whatever the heck those are) are not all just binary, black and white; there are shades of grey in between and, gosh, also colours.“

Well done. You just defined the spectrum of ‘like’ and ‘dislike’.

” Got a bible verse to back that up, if you are going to start invoking God in this absurdity?“

Do you believe the bible is the correct or absolute reference here? Dear oh dear. This is a scientific site; do better.

” * note: you can also just be a superfan, you don't have to take the obnoxious path and be a fanbois once you have gone beyond the level of just a normal fan.“

Correct, and well done again. Now go and tell the author of the article; he seems to disagree with you.

Re: anti-Apple (fanboi) sentiment

"> because hiding inside every anti-fanboi of company A is a fanboi of company B.

> First of all it's an assumption

"

Everybody is a fan of something. Everybody. Literally every single human being on the planet. It's not an assumption, it's an absolute literal God-given fact. Because dividing the world up into things we like and things we don't like is a defining aspect of Humanity.

Don't be a dick. It doesn't suit you.

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

Re: anti-Apple (fanboi) sentiment

Why aim anything at fanbois? First of all it's an assumption, second of all it's none of anybody else's business what people choose to like or not like.

Besides, anti-fanbois are also pretty annoying. And usually hypocritical, because hiding inside every anti-fanboi of company A is a fanboi of company B.

"Disagree - care to share any double blind A/B testing that shows this?"

Sure - here's one on speaker cable. Definite difference between cheap (crap) and 'proper', and basically no difference once you get into the 'proper' territory. Which is what I said.

The difference is in the shielding. It comes down to:

No shielding vs some shielding, noticeable.

Some shielding but not properly wound vs 'proper' shielding, noticeable by a trained ear, but not by normal mortals

'Decent' proper shielding vs 'Unbelievably expensive' proper shielding, no difference at all.

Re: Poor design in my opinion

For analogue, there is a noticeable difference between a $10 interconnect and a $100 interconnect (or SCART). There is a tiny bit of difference (to audiophile/videophile ears and eyes; 99% of us couldn't tell them apart) between a $100 interconnect and a $1000 interconnect. There's no difference at all between a $1000 interconnect and a $10,000 (or higher) interconnect, apart from bragging rights.

For digital, as long as the cable is mechanically sound there is no difference at all between a $10 HDMI, a $100 HDMI and a $10,000 HDMI. Same goes for optical. The 0s and 1s get from one end to the other just fine. The problem with (very) cheap cables is that they tend to BE less mechanically sound; but you don't need to spend much more money to avoid this.

Re: Unique keys

First NameS cumulatively adding up to 50-chars, possible albeit uncommon. As in: James Stuart Roderick Andrew Farley Timothy Hamish. That's 50 characters.

A 50-char first NAME, which is what we're talking about here; the chance is essentially zero that it will ever be encountered; and even less that there isn't a shorter form that the person is used to using. It's simply not possible to function in the modern world with a resolutely unshortenable 50-char first name.

Respect works both ways. I will try to a reasonable extent to accommodate people such that they feel comfortable, but if they have a hugely inconvenient characteristic that makes it difficult to communicate, be it a name or anything else, then they own at least part of the responsibility to facilitate efficient and comfortable communication. To expect others to bend without making any effort yourself is the height of arrogance.

I used to work with a partially deaf guy. The problem wasn't that he was hard of hearing; it was that he refused to wear a hearing aid of any description. He demanded that every sound be scaled up or down for his convenience; presentations at uncomfortably loud volumes for the rest of the room, travel to client sites when everybody else had to use Webex so he could "understand properly", group conversations where as soon as he joined everybody except the speaker had to be mouse-quiet so he could hear, and so on.

After a couple of weeks of this, one of our colleagues quite rightly told him to fuck off and put a hearing aid in if he wanted to understand what was going on, because we were done bending over backwards to accommodate his foibles.

Re: Unique keys

” My sons first names excede 30 chars in length.“

First nameS. That’s different to a first NAME.

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

Re: Unique keys

” For asking that a system has the decency to be able to store their given name??“

50 characters. FIFTY. Times two. That’s a 99.999th percentile outlier, and it’s unreasonable to expect systems to be designed for it.

(Just to put it into context, this is what a 50 character first name looks like:

Shivabrahamabalaramasubramaniankrishnansubramanian

Aside from designing for it, I question if this would EVER actually occur in nature. I suspect there might be a bit of embellishment going on in the original story.

”Had he not, would you have not respected that too?“

Respected, yes. Used? No. It’s beyond the bounds of reasonableness to expect others to memorise and use a name like that in everyday situations.

Dammit. Snorted my beer reading that.

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

Re: Unique keys

Fore- and surnames longer than 50 characters but refuses to use a shortened version? The person is both being an asshole AND has way too much free time. People with those kind of names ALWAYS have a shortened name for general use.

(Longest name of a person I ever worked with was an Indian chap with two 15-letter forenames and a 15-letter surname. Called himself by the first 4 letters of his first name.)

Less lift isn't a problem in and of itself. It can be compensated for by less weight or more speed, depending on the required design parameters.

I see that there are 3 DHL employees here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

Yes I get the paperwork angle. The reasons I believe it's a scam (or more accurately, extortion) are:

1. I have no contract with DHL, and did not engage their services.

2. I am given no option to choose another party to handle my imports.

3. In my particular case, the vendor has already done the import paperwork at point of origin; DHL simply duplicate this (or 'verify' it, in their words)

3. I am not afforded the opportunity to submit my own paperwork.

4. The charges are out of all proportion to the "actual" cost of 'filling in paperwork', which in reality involves no actual paper and is fully automated in most cases.

It may well be that after consideration of the above I "choose" to pay the €7 or so to get it all handled for convenience' sake, but the point is then it would be my CHOICE. As it currently stands, I have no realistic choice other than reject the package and in all likelihood lose my money.

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

Very true...

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

Nobody said it was the same. The original statement was "I have NEVER heard of any legitimate transaction where you are hoping to get an investment from someone else, but where YOU have to pay first to facilitate the transaction." - upfront package handling fees are an example of where you have to pay first to facilitate the transaction. These become a scam (in my view) when they: A. Charge you to tell you there's no charge, and B. hold your package to ransom knowing full well that returning it is a practical impossibility.

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

Yeah I get the technical difference, but it’s hard not to see what DHL are doing as ‘legalised’ advance-fee fraud. Especially as they essentially impose charges for telling you there are no charges.

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

” Also can I ask, because maybe it's an American thing, but I have NEVER heard of any legitimate transaction where you are hoping to get an investment from someone else, but where YOU have to pay first to facilitate the transaction.“

If you’re in the EU and receiving a package from outside the EU, it’s pretty common to have to pay processing costs before you receive your product. This itself is a scam as companies like DHL will often extort a ‘handling fee’ before telling you that no import duties are due, and the only thing you need to pay is their handling fee.

Of course non-payment means you don’t get your package, and if it gets returned to whichever Chinese online tat bazaar you bought it from, good luck ever getting a refund either.

Re: "I am very smart"

” Same as when you see someone's online handle containing words as "king", "lord", "master" or the like, you can safely ignore anything they write as chances are it will be utter drivel.“

Ouch.

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

I will go out on a limb and tempt fate by saying there is zero chance that I would be caught by any of the tech scams going at the moment.

The same can’t necessarily be said for genuinely new scams using a previously unknown vector. Luckily those don’t come along too often.

On a semi related note, I got an email last year from my credit card company saying there had been a data breach, my records were exposed and as we really are very very sorry, here’s 2 years credit monitoring. Note; monitoring, not protection.

Last week I received an email from Experian saying yes my details had been spotted on the dark web, but I’d need to pay their consultants if I wanted any action taken as the ‘subscription’ didn’t cover that.

The line between ‘legal’ and ‘illegal’ scams seems to be getting more and more blurred.

Re: Well that was unfortunate.

I can tell you that in the EU country where I live, you absolutely cannot just fire people because you want to without incurring severe financial penalties. WAY beyond stat min. You can make a POSITION redundant, at which point companies are required to offer alternative roles inside the company, and only when that process has been completely exhausted (usually taking years) then you can look to a redundancy. If there are no performance reasons for the redundancy, you're still then looking at a very substantial payout. In the specific case I was involved in (from the company side), close to 2 years salary plus a €65k transition allowance. And this is AFTER the years of basically doing nothing while the company tries to find you another job. This is from personal, actual experience; I'm not theorising.

I know of at least one other country where the situation is even more locked down. Companies like the one I'm currently working for simply cannot make people redundant there without documented performance reasons or criminal activity. They need to go through a redundancy process with the works councils and unions, which takes many many months, and after that IF they agree, the redundancy packages are penalistic.

Germany/Austria/Switzerland is a black hole when it comes to employment law; all I know is that contractor friends of mine who know FTEs there say they are essentially bulletproof in their roles.

Lord Elpuss Silver badge

Re: Well that was unfortunate.

"In the UK and most of the EU you can be fired for any reason other than the various protected characteristics, as long as they pay the statutory minimum payout when doing so. It is pretty much a US-only thing to be unable to fire someone without cause."
