Sony snoozes over substandard PS Plus service

jodyfanning
FAIL

And I just coughed up for the PS+ as well. First thing I noticed was that in the Store many of the freebies icons were missing. For example the dynamic themes were just empty boxes in the UI instead of showing a thumbnail.

In any case the biggest thing to me is that it will auto-update. I get little enough time to play these days without waiting through 30 minutes of forced updates...

Apple can't agree with Australian regulator on iPad 4G

jodyfanning
Unhappy

If it was defined that 4G LTE and only LTE then the Aussies might have a case, but since it is now assumed that any sufficiently fast 3G is actually 4G I think they are out of luck.

On the other hand I would like that my iPad WiFi + 4G could actually switch to 3G after using WiFi. But everyone's complaints in the Apple forums still fall on deaf ears.

Re: Camera App Improved?

Just watched a video showing the new camera UI. You can create sets of totally custom settings now. Looks like a full camera now, not a toy phone version.

Would almost tempt me to upgrade from an N8. It is also more tempting to wait for the WP8 version later this year...

All perfectly true. Hard to convince the fanboys of it though.

Firefox devs mull dumping Java to stop BEAST attacks

jodyfanning
FAIL

Bye bye Firefox

I was just going to say the same thing. Danske Bank took over one of the main Finnish banks (Sampo) and promptly reverted their webbank to something from the 90's. And it now relies entirely on Java for authentication. There was absolutely no need for that and Sampo's previous site worked across all devices. But it is what it is now.

So if they ever did block Java I'm sure most many customers across the Nordic countries would have to give up on Firefox. Never mind all the support calls from extremely confused customers.

@mage Just for info, James Cameron is a member of the science team, so it is a "we".

WTF?

No way to dispose of nuclear waste??!

You obviously haven't heard of fuel reprocessing then, or fast breeder reactors.

@SuperTim, you must have pretty cruddy heater on your car.

And those of us who live in the Nordic regions actually _expect_ that our things work even in sub-zero temperatures.

Oh dear, how sad

I was using my Nokia N8 to take photos outside at -28C over Christmas. And then coming inside it fogged up completely on the outside, but never had an issue.

You see Finnish smokers standing outside in -20C or below. But like all smokers they deserve it.

Nokia locks* out Symbian staffers

jodyfanning
FAIL

Does anyone read the Nokia statements?!

Lots of mis-reporting. Everyone seems to think that Symbian is disappearing. That is wrong.

What has been told by Nokia is that you shouldn't any longer target Symbian when writing apps, you should make all calls through Qt.

So, it is like MS saying not to use Win32 APIs directly, but use .Net instead. Just because you write to .Net does't means Windows disappears.

Only half the story as usual from an AC

Give the whinging a break and actually read before you post. You were completely missing most of the changes.

"Nokia will focus on making developers more money by leveraging the largest operator billing footprint available and greatly improving the operator revenue share for payments made after October 1. "

I saw somewhere they were guaranteeing 60% share for operator billing.

Nothing to do with MS phones...

This MS guy lead the Office team. There are only two divisions at MS making money (hand over fist) and that are the Office and Windows ones.

Wow, my home town mentioned in The Register. What is the world coming to?!

Really though, September is spring in the deep south and they are used to the cold anyway. And if you are going to link to the story you could at least link to the original source.

Already retracted by Samsung...

And of course it was all a misunderstanding and Samsung has already retracted the rumour about Symbian.

In other rumours it is suspected that bada is just a version of the Touchwiz interface.

Can use the Firefox 3.7 theme now...

Basically you can already use the planned Firefox 3.7 Aero theme in Windows now. Someone made a version of it that works fine along with a couple of other plug-ins.

I tried it already in Windows 7 and it works perfectly. Using lots of glass has the interesting effect of making the browser frame almost disappear which makes the page content much more visible.

10,000 Hotmail passwords mysteriously leaked to web

@Anonynous Coward and @Andrew Bush

The local phone company in Finland connected up our house to a landline for free in 2004, but we have never, ever had a landline phone. It is used for ADSL only.

Mobile usage in Finland is well over 100% now (many people have multiple subscriptions). So if some idiots want to base credit ratings on mobile usage they can go ahead, but they are only screwing themselves.

And I always use my Hotmail account when registering for sites unless I really trust them. And The Reg doesn't fall into that category.

Nokia's £500 netbook: What were they thinking?

jodyfanning
Alert

You missed things about

What about the GPS. Not found in any other netbook.

The chipset used in this can support 1366x768. So 720 is no problem.

But anyway, who is going to be paying full retail. It should come with a contract just like a phone does.

I'm more concerned about the fixed 1GB of RAM, but being Windows 7 it might just get away with it.

Nokia brandishes superfluous Booklet

jodyfanning

Still a real GPS

A-GPS just means it is assisted to get an initial lock. Usually with phones or the current Nokia tablets they just contact a server to get the latest satellite positions.

They all still have a normal GPS chip and work without the "A", but the lock will be a minute or two instead of under 20 seconds.

To me this netbook looks much more like an Apple product than a normal plastic cheapo job from Asus. And with features like the GPS I am more than interested.

Get your facts right.

I don't know where half you get your facts from, but it obviously isn't from anyone who understands what is going on.

Nokia is not dropping Symbian. If anything it is only being repositioned in the market. None of the browsers used in any Nokia product are from Opera. And the N900 is obviously totally different hardware than the N97 since it is running the OMAP3 (Cortex A8) platform just like the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre. The N97 is running the older OMAP2 platform (ARM 11) like all previous S60 phones.

Hydrogen is a waste of time

Hydrogen is almost useless as a source of power. There is no distribution system for hydrogen. Storage in the car is a still unsolved problem as is manufacturing.

Electricity is already basically everywhere and there are many ways to generate it. Storage capacity (batteries) are getting better every day.
