Plex plucks media cloud service, sends users scurrying to exit

Anon the mouse

So what is plex pass for?

I used to use Plex until shortly after they introduced the pass system....

Why do I need to login to their system to stream my local files to my local devices? Other than to give them usage data,

Netflix scores new Trek tellie

Anon the mouse

Netflix has got overly harsh in locking down everything that isn't a home ip address. Everything from data centres down to hotels has been locked out.

A shame really as the smart DNS or VPN solution was what made netflix good. I'd rather watch Netflix France or Netherlands than UK

Is this the last ever Lumia?

Anon the mouse

at least the 1020 tried something

This is just mid-range as ever. I loved my 1020, until it got progressively slower. The camera while no DSLR was a great standout feature. If this was higher/equal res and not sluggish like the 1020, I'd probably be heading back to the Lumia fold.

Re: "...this one's got a way to run"

Ah yes, my reading comprehension and ability to understand how a server works must have evaporated when my refund came through. I still have an interest in the game, at the moment it seems to be more morbid curiosity as problems pile up. But I still hope that one day it'll come good for those that DO enjoy it.

In this case the database problem was one of those things you find out in the live version, however not leaving any support staff to help customers for 2 weeks just after release. That was poor planning from Frontier, Leaving no updates or anything for customers tends to spiral things out of control, again look at the refund situation that is still ongoing for most two months later.

Anon the mouse

Re: "...this one's got a way to run"

You are comparing a DDoS of servers to mismanaged servers. Completely different

Anon the mouse

You would have thought people would've realised what the support was going to be like after the refund problems. Though writing refund quest was very cathartic.

Frontier, seem very, very overwhelmed as usual. But then release a game and announce a two week holiday for a week later was always going to be a clusterf*ck.

Separating the phone and line rental costs is a side effect of the main purpose of these style contracts.

At present a "subsidised" contract is line rental only and the phone is a "free gift" that forms no part of the contract.

By doing the parts separately you don't actually own the phone until it's fully paid for, it's separate from the service, and therefore stops people from getting a contract which they only pay 6 months of and then selling the phone.

Re: 20 years?

But Apple made the smartphone.... and Nokia started it...honest..... HTC weren't even a blip on the radar.....even though they produced phones with lots more features years before the competition (when they worked right. SPV c500 replaced 4 times to get a useable one).

I still have my HTC Universal somewhere..... such a great phone, the only phone where I wish they would just update the internals (and software) and re-release it.

Looking at this list http://www.windowsfordevices.com/c/a/Windows-For-Devices-Articles/Guide-to-HTCs-Windows-Mobile-smartphones/

there are a few phones there I would love to see updated.....oh and maybe the tytn II for another :D

Dragons are fun to kill, and make for the most memorable moments in the game. Nighttime tracking through a forest suddenly the music changes and up ahead an orange glow appears in the distance through the trees..... a dragon is attacking a giant and they are locked in battle......Low level means I run leaving them to fight it out, I haven't saved for a while so don't want to reload into that battle :)

@dssf

"If we're more rationally earlier in life trained to EXPECT death, how EVER it comes, part of the excessive preoccupation with transformation of some sort is nixed."

Sorry to break it to you but that's utter bollocks.

I lost a child a few years ago (at a few months old), and my older children KNOW what death is because of that. Everything was explained to them at an appropriate level for their ages, and any questions over the years have been answered truthfully. At the time they weren't too bother, now they do worry more over death and dying than other children of comparable age (6-9). They worry more when people are ill that they will die.

I would never have withheld the information from them, but it does change their outlook on life......

Debt collectors warned off pursuing punters on Facebook

Anon the mouse

And fictional/wrong debts too.

My parents had a HCEO push a letter through the door saying I'll be back later to take the car. Cue frantic phonecalls/traces to find that a) they didn't owe any debt and b) the company had just gone through the electoral role and checked the addresses to find the same name with the most expensive car.

My debts however were real and are now statute barred (6 years+), though I learnt lots of the nasty underhanded tricks they pull and now have a handy list for others to follow :-

Always ask for proof of the debt.... many have none, so it could be fictitious (had 2 of those in a year)

If they try and get you to sign ANYTHING refuse, whatever they say the reason it's most likely a lie to get you to sign a walk-in possession

never let them in, speak on the front.... sure it's embarassing but one foot in the door means they OWN everything in sight (except beds/cooker/essentials).

Most importantly never, ever agree a payment until you have concrete proof of the debt (from them). a single "token" payment restarts the 6 year statute limit.

Oh and keep as much as possible in writing.... voice isn't worth the paper it's written on :)

Punters to favour Smart TV over 3D TV

So really they are looking at 4.7m smarttvs being sold that don't incorporate 3D

Connecting the TV upto the network is a simple but fantastic move. Iplayer, 4OD, and also your large collection of ripped movies and music at the touch of a button (well okay 2-3 presses).

Poster presents evolution of game controllers

Anon the mouse
FAIL

Looks pretty inaccurate in places

Rumble (not force feedback) originated in the N64 controller as an addon pack, all the controllers that followed included it as a built in feature. Yet this poster has no links from it to the Xbox or Wii controllers.

Also pretty sure sticking something over the controller (wii wheel, wii zapper, psmove gun, etc) doesn't count as a new controller.

Dixons drops Motorola Xoom price... again

Anon the mouse
WTF?

£200 tablets are available,

Strangely enough from DSG too.

I picked up the Advent Vega (tegra chipset, 10" screen),

Spent a couple of hours installing the vegacomb firmware (honeycomb 3.2 for Vega). Before doing anything else. Follow the guide to the letter and even a 6 year old can do it (she did about 50% of the work)

Yes that's not for the average consumer, but on a tech site I don't see why there are so many complaints when they are available at the price you want. And a couple of hours tinkering gives you all the latest android release.

Or is it not the price but just a need to moan about tablets in general?

HP's fondle-slab dilemma: What to do when you're No 2

Decent DLNA software - Samsung Allshare

I also do all of my home media tasks using DLNA over the network. 2 Jogglers, android phone, ps3, tv, and laptop all work without problems

Currently I'm using Samsung Allshare (Free and pretty low resource usage). I can't comment on music files as I mainly play mp3's. But for video it seems to play anything that remotely ressembles a video file, I was surprised to see full HD MKV support over wifi with no stuttering/cutout.

Point it in the direction of your library and let it index the files. Updated the files, just open up allshare again and it will ask if you want it to rebuild the library for you :D

The only sticking point is enabling devices for playback the first time.

Blu-ray sales to overtake DVD... next year

Anon the mouse

I think they might have figured out what people want

There are 2 types of triple play too....

The first has a BD, DVD and Digital like you describe.

The second has a 3D BD, standard BD and digital.

I'm working under the assumption that they have figured out that if you have a BD player you generally want a copy to throw around the internal network for all your devices too :D

Nintendo coughs to using Xbox, PS3 footage at Wii U event

Anon the mouse

@ So how many Wii owners felt like they "won"

Any Wii can be hacked with an SD card and a version specific file/game. You can then enable the ability to play games (that you copy from your legally owned disks) from a USB drive. You can also enable region bypass so all those jap/us only games that can be imported can be played on your standard UK wii :D

That sounds like a win to me.

I have all 3 systems and the Wii felt like the biggest win and biggest disappointment at the same time.... pretty much like the Wii U

Anon the mouse

True

but they have stated that they won't introduce a new console for approx 10 years from PS3 release date.

I'm pretty sure MS killed the Xbox dead as soon as the 360 came out. I vaguely remember a stink about game developers not being allowed to release NEW xbox1 games after the 360 release date.
