GNU/Linux Touch Displays

I have am abomination of a desktop from HP with a touch screen, came with Vista, put 7 on it with an SSD - the thing works pretty well ... I do have Debian on it as well and the touch screen is detected and drivers loaded automatically.

This means that I can use either, mouse and touch screen.

I have not tested it on unity, but the unity ui is a touch-centric ui - say what you want, guyz, but half inch by half inch icons are for touch devices, not pointing devices - the same holds for the default menu in gnome 3 as well - this I tested and it works pretty well. Now, I never use the touch screen (except for the tests), nor do the kids except for the 2 year old, she loves it - mainly because she still has coordination issues with pointing devices!

Tuxpaint on a 17" touch screen is great for toddlers, but touch screens on desktops are otherwise useless.

So Metro/Unity/Gnome 3 have become toddler uis.

WTF?

Stylus ?

The whole point here is that to use the iphone you do not NEED a stylus, you could use one if you wanted. It is much easier to draw with a stylus, for example, than with your finger.

There are plenty of stylus models for iOS devices.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/10/2925937/best-stylus-ipad-review

I assume the ipad they will be bringing out will have a stylus, however, it will accept your finger input as well - and that is the whole point. Back then, a stylus was the only thing you could use on other devices, well, maybe you could manage with your fingernail, but that was hard.

Easy certifications, Redmond's plan to world dominance - an entire army of bigoted point & click experts who fail to understand the most basic security measures, indoctrinated with the latest propaganda to advance Redmond's agenda.

The army that gave rise to malware galore that benefited from a software portfolio full of security sieves, with a still dominant belief that security through obscurity is the way to go.

Now they give looneys who failed the exam a second chance for free, since professionals are leaving the Titanic in hordes.

Re: I am a UKIP member.

Down-vote ? Truth hurts ? I am sorry, sincerely. I understand that you or close friends of yours, like mine, are in a difficult situation. You have to understand that, as much as I hate [New ]Labour, the economic downturn was not their fault ... proof, and I will get a lot of downvotes for giving facts, a lot of countries suffered the same fate. No amount of savings beforehand could have relieved the UK, OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY, from this global event, worse, it would have diminished economic growth during the good years, which would have made the downturn even worse.

Buying 1% of growth during a crisis costs exponentially more than during a time of growth, such are the laws of economics. Public spending drives jobs, the economy ...

Those who claim the harsh down turn was Blair's or Brown's fault are mistaken, and I despise fibbers in parliament, New Labour, the conservatives (and equivalents in all countries). The conservatives have wrecked both UK and Europe (to be fair, not just UK cons, I mean the cons Europe-wide, excuse my French [look up the English translation of "cons"]).

If you think for a minute, stop being a bigot [the same holds in France, Germany, Belgium, wherever], why would Blair, Cameron, or Brown say the EU has too much power over the UK ? MEP's have been elected by citizens of all member states, they control the commission [commission members are elected by the parliament], just like the British gov (except that the head of commission is chosen by Cameron, Merkel and Hollande (the other heads of state do not really have a say, well, I guess they could veto, maybe), then parliament votes him/her in or out).

So, why do gov's keep scaring the shit out of the Brits about EU ? Because if the EU gets too much power, they will be out of work - as easy as that.

Would you like a big portion of a small cake, or a small portion of a humongous cake ? The French are not morons, nor are the Germans, we are the same ... OK, some of the French (barbarians) eat horse meat, but we, like the Germans, eat jelly (some French [a majority, but I managed to convert a few ;-)] cannot even stand the look of it).

Do you really think we would be better off without the French and German economy on our side ? We are so much stronger together, think about it.

The politicians we have are the best we have to offer, don't like them, want economic growth ? Vote green, green is the future. Nobody does, coz AGW is untrue and my child's asthma is due to bad luck, I could go on forever.

The one thing you and your friends do not understand is economics - it is what makes our world go round, sadly, but so it is. How are you supposed to govern a country when you do not even understand the basics. Go read/listen to what the French nobel prize winner (2015) wrote/has to say - quite the opposite of what Nigel says, right ? Who is nobel prize winner in economics ? Go read up on www.oecd.org the benefits of immigration. I could go on ... seriously, you are being cheated.

Re: They arent a serious party..

@Jim 59

The problem is, arse-holes come in all colors, shapes and sizes.

When you refer to someone or a group of people by their ethnic background, sexuality, nationality, belief and give that person/group certain properties and you mean or infer that all members of the group are the same, good or bad, you are xenophobic.

White, yellow, black, red, Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, Aryan, Caucasian, African, Asian ... whatever ... there is no need to be a racist ... 99% of times when somebody gets called out for being a racist, there is a reason.

I would take it even further ... as a human, why would somebody who was born in a place have more rights than somebody who was born elsewhere ? Why would somebody have more rights than another, just because he had the right parents ? (I am not talking wealth, here, I mean civil rights) Tell me !

Does the birth place, parents matter ? In the UK, it matters a lot ... look, you have lords and a monarch ... most "developed" iow "educated" countries in the world did away with that bullshit centuries ago. The people seizing all belongings of the monarch ...

Re: Major update cockup?

@dogged

European parliament, like UK, is governed by conservatives ... vote for labor or commies and Europe will care for the poor. I am not saying I hope for the commies to take over, but a strong commy party makes sure the EU takes care of the poor.

The EU has always been governed by conservatives, and the UK conservatives are part of the leading fraction that governs, and have been since inception. Blame it on them.

As for corruption, all governments are corrupt, to a certain extent - corruption is how the boys and girls get into office.

Hans 1

Re: Major update cockup?

"How can we give £1bn [...] to Bongo Bongo land"

Now, you can write what you want, but to even consider using a derogatory word as such denotes deep sincere racism. I would never have thought of using such a term, maybe he could not remember the name of the continent ?

Besides, UKIP MEP Godfrey Bloom has absolutely no clue of international trade or humanitarian aid, for that matter. Now, it is true, we have quite phenomenally improved living standards in third world countries, just look at the decline of starvation and malnutrition over the last 20 years. However, people in the 3rd world are still starving to death; we have "products" on the market called weight watchers and slim fast.

He was then referring to corrupt governments across Africa that take large chunks of the money we allotted to their country ... just how do you think we get our natural resources so cheap, Mr Bloom ?

Now, I condemn this situation, of course, but for every £1 we give these bastards (corrupt officials), we get 5 or 10 back.

Margareth Thatcher was just as blind folded when she said "We want our money back" ... she wanted "le beurre, l'argent du beurre, et le cul de la cremiere" (excuse my French). The E.U. costs a lot of money, agreed, but 80% of our exports go to EU member states, we need the EU. We do not want to go back to borders, tariffs etc ... well, EU has a price. UK is making many times more from the EU as it is than it is contributing to it.

The world is changing, we need a big market to compete with Asian giants (India, China). Can UK ban Chinese imports on its own ? What effect will it have if they threaten to do it ? What impact does it have if a market 10 times bigger threatens to ban imports ? Right.

Imagine the EU football team, the best players of all European Nations ... unbeatable, unbeatable ... a dream team. It is exactly the same economically ... together we are bigger than China or US, GDP wise. Together we can say fuck off to whichever nation we want.

These are things UKIP does NOT understand. Their miracle solutions are mirages, in France we have the same, with Le Pen wanting a return to the <jokeAlert>sesterce</jokeAlert>.

The worst of all is, the UK education system has produced a nation of bigots. I am sorry, you really need to have lived abroad to understand what EU is all about (it is not your fault, it is what you were taught). I have met numerous Brits abroad who admitted they only just discovered what this was all about. If the UK government had any common sense back in the 80's and 90's, London would have been the European Stock Exchange, not Frankfurt. Blame Maggy!

If the French had common sense, we would have had a constitution by now, the 2008/2009 global crisis would have been much smaller a problem. We are now 18 players on a pitch with each and every one of us having a different strategy ... how are we gonna score like this ?????

Besides, Greece is richer than some Lander (Germany) or richer per capita than some Regions (France) - sure there is an equivalent in the UK, now, I do not hear much uproar in France about the poorer regions who live off the back of us ... we NEED TO stand together, we all profit from it.

We need the euro, which is a blessing ... ever noticed why it was so high for so many years ? To counter balance high energy prices, which are paid in $. Now they have fallen, the euro has been allowed to lose value, which will dope our exports. How about the pound ? Well, you know what, all exports from the UK will be more expensive in euroland ... will that help your exports ?

News flash: Brit blames EU.

Please, you do not know what you are talking about. They are bringing specifically modified cars, with overinflated tires for example, different clutches etc to the test.

The manufacturers are cheating ... you cannot yet launch a class action suit in France (it will be coming, I heard), but you should certainly do so elsewhere if your country allows it. They are advertising results for a non-showroom car - that's it, false advertizing.

Apple analogy: Apple claim its iPhone 6 can hold 40Tb of data - well, because the prototype with new generation flash ship showed that in its tests.

Apple do not do that, they would get in trouble ... car makers? No problem! Why ? Jobs, not Steve, workers in Europe ...

> Subsidy is money contributed by a government to make an item or commodity cheaper than it's cost? I thought France still levied a tax on diesel, albeit not as large as UK tax.

Yes, well, in France, the taxes on diesel are lower (%-wise) than those on unleaded petrol - mainly because some lobbyists told the French government that Diesel was cleaner (more environmentally friendly) with, of course, absolutely no reliable data to back that claim up. Not sure how they convinced the gov ... especially if you consider Greenpeace, grey beards, hippies, and the French Green party kept saying it was utter bollocks. Who knows what happened ...

I know what happened, but the moderator will veto my comment if I tell you.

You cannot miss a bus, the bus on the time table will be hours late. You do not really notice on busy routes, you do when you have to catch any of the first 3 of the day or you are on a route with poor service.

Hans 1

Re: How can grown adults not tell the difference between fiction and reality?

>If you were to lift a fingerprint from the phone itself, what are the odds that (1) it would be a finger that the phone was programmed to recognize, (2) there would be enough of the fingerprint to fill the entire sensor, (3) that the lift would give you enough quality and resolution to fool the sensor, and (4) you could do all of this in less than an hour, which is probably the worst-case amount of time I would need to notice that my phone is stolen and remotely wipe it?

Actually, you can tell from the finger print which finger it is. They could be at quite a distance - all they need to know is the finger you used. It is on there unless you use gloves ... do you not hold backspace a few times when you type passwords in public places - I do sometimes forget, but try to stick to it (type something, first x letters are good, then hold backspace to delete more than one character - as many as required to get to x letters - then type on) ?

>I am a techie. Guess what: it is not obvious to me at all that the iPhone has only one physical storage device available, and that its Operating System is installed on the same physical storage device as the one dedicated to general-purpose storage.

You are NOT a techie, cut the crap! All current generation smartphones use this storage strategy. I heard Nokia smartphones were different back in the day ... Note that I did not/will not comment or vote on the guy you are answering to ...

>The Tech Specs do not mention any details about the physical storage device layout, nor do they mention anything about how many I/O channels are available on the iPhone's motherboard. And assuming that a mobile phone has only one physical storage device available is just as dumb and ignorant as assuming that a laptop or a PC has only one hard drive available, or that a laptop or PC motherboard has only one I/O channel available.

Do the tech specs mention expansion slots of any sort ? Yes. Do they mention a built-in sd card port ? no ... ouch, sorry. Now, why do you need to know how many I/O channels a device has ? You know, it can have 1000, if they are not hooked up to a connector, you will not be able to connect anything to them - unless you bolt something onto the hardware.

Now, an iOS device can read an sd card!! You can get an sd card adapter that plugs into the magic connector (dunno the name of that thingy on JesusPhones, too lazy to look it up). You can get an sd card adapter that converts a micro sd card into a plain sd card as well ... no, you cannot launch any apps from it, just like unhacked android phone. Hans 1

Well, I think we are talking vendor android, here. Not everyone has the time or expertise to do that.

Untangling .NET Core: Open source for Windows, Mac, Linux

Hans 1

Re: Win over ? Windows is over!

>you sound like a clueless fanboy.

I am not a Linux fanboy, sorry. Lets cut marketing crap and talk about the facts:

Today, .Net only really runs on Windows. They tried to bring it to OS X and Linux with mono, traction failed to materialized. Most stuff simply DOES NOT run on mono. Back in the day, I approved mono, thought it was a good move. I have to acknowledge that there simply is no traction.

Now, they are open sourcing the runtime and IDE. The legitimate question is why ? There is no valid reason, imho, for them to do that other than reacting to a difficult position. I do not believe your cloud BS ... they only offer Linux in the cloud as an option because they need to cater for their customers ... MS are not big in the cloud, they fail epically in terms of reliability - as the number of articles on el'reg attest. They cannot even renew certificates yearly, they made that mistake TWICE, not once, TWICE, in a run!!!!!

So, lets assume, for one second, that .Net is as great as you say. That should be crown jewels and should be used to maintain Windows hegemony. Reality is it is crap, the ecosystem is losing developers in great numbers. Linux is gaining more and more momentum in the server rooms. Now, Linux/UNIX does not need .Net, we have the best of breed tools and interfaces, Linux/UNIX dev's will NEVER EVER embrace mono/.Net/WhatEverYouCallit as we have much better stuff already, and have had for decades.

I could not care less for .Net/VB or whatever on Linux/UNIX, seriously, we do not care, we laud the effort, it simply does not fit into our paradigm. I am simply saying, the move proves that they have realized how futile they are.

Norks: FBI's Sony Pictures' hacking allegations are 'groundless slander'

Re: 2nd time....

Telegraph article, you have the gutts to link to a telegraph article on here ???

OK, then ...

Read that article again. They have one guy, who does not like the Norks, claim they did not have enough cash last time they came round to his shop ... that same person has also claimed he saw them in a car boot sale. The exact same person has also been demonstrating against NK.

I guess you will agree, not the best witness/source you could dream of, here, mate, right ?

The verification of said story has been poor as well - they ask some guy in the know ... who confirms they are not well paid, well off etc. Which is undoubtedly the case, however, does not at all verify the claims of the shopkeeper.

The worst part ? The traffic fines ... "the embassy in London has accrued more than £200,000 worth of unpaid traffic-related fines" - that is true for most/all embassies in London, similar in France and Germany as well for the simple fact that CD's do not have to pay traffic, parking, etc fines. The fines accumulate over the years ... Saudi Arabia representation probably has 10x that number in unpaid traffic fines.

This whole article smells of poorly researched BS.

Re: Why the focus on GitHub?

> “Linux clients are not affected if they run in a case-sensitive filesystem,”

Yes, I sent a request for correction, along with an extract of the GNAME announcement.

This basically means that 99.99% of Linux git clients are not affected. It also means that 1% of Mac OS X clients are not affected - real men use a case-sensitive OS/FS - HFS+ can be and SHOULD BE set to case-sensitive, not only is it better, imho, you also expose code from window cleaners turned OS X devs, and that is priceless. If it does not work on a case-sensitive FS, you should not use it.

Judge spanks SCO in ancient ownership of Unix lawsuit

>Not to mention that, with systemd & friends turning Linux into a non-Unix-alike system, a healthy SCO would be just what a good many sysadmins need right now.

Any of the BSD's, I prefer FreeBSD.
