the EU ruling that forced MS to publish APIs
Even MS Office has problems, as soon as your suppliers migrate to a new version of office, you have to also, because forward & backward compatibility is something Redmond never thought existed. I had to fix a Word document the other day, written with Word 2002, for Word 2016 ... the formatting was "gone" ... no, I do not have an old 2002 Word lying around, but pretty sure it worked flawlessly when it was authored.
Accenture and Microsoft do have a joint venture they started together called Avanade
Yup, I somehow confused Avenade and Accenture ... mainly because Accenture do have a complacency ... I have seen several of my customers getting the Accenture treatment, thus considering the "one software purveyor (Microsoft) policy", an brain-dead arse-child of Accenture ... you know, the usual response on my part is always: "Oh, you put all your eggs into one basket ?"
Icon => failure on MY part.
If you need to retrain all your staff to work with Open / Libre -Office while they're already fully familiar with MS Office then going open source might not be the best of ideas for that specific part.
Ohhh, did you not have to retrain for Office 2007, then ?
We need a FSF phone OS that works on all phones => problem solved. Ideally, the system would have some sort of hardware detector to activate drivers ... I mean GNU/Linux does it quite nicely, we need that for phone OS' and I do not care if it is android based, it HAS TO BE FSF so we can apply patches as we see fit ... just like GNU/Linux.
EDIT: so miffed I originally wrote FFS iso FSF ...
There is at least one move group. That group paid for a vendor OS and then installed Linux anyway
I beg you, implore you, please stop. You are funding SCUM - they don't care if you run their software, provided you pay them when you buy a computer ... there are plenty of outfits that sell computers with Linux pre-installed that need your support, provided, of course, that they have the kit you are looking for ...
I build towers, so buy the parts separately ... last time I flung cash over to Slurp was in the 90's for an intelliMouse.
crapple's piggeon box walled garden?
Please enlighten me, in what way is Android's ecosystem not also a pigeon box walled garden ?
macOS X has a Mach kernel, so not really a BSD kernel ... it does have BSD userland tools, though, which is cool ;-). Admittedly not so cool for the Linux generation ... Real UNIX, though I do miss POSIX_ME_HARDER ... arghhh, mon cœur balance.
THAT Î happened to me yesterday, well, to the son ... 0wned this other bloke on pvp repeatably until the net went. So, he said the guy DDOS'd us ... I thought, bollocks, not possible .... that script kiddie cannot control a bot farm ...turns out, you have DDOSAAS sites ... just fill in IP of target ... and they were chatting p2p, so he had our IP.
I have a router, "tracepath 8.8.8.8" stopped at my DSLAM IP, rebooting the router "solved" the issue, note that ISP-provided TV (as in, TV on their network) was not affected, only Internet access ... problem is, I have a home office ... if that shithead does it again, while I am working ... in a conf call or something, my phone is VOIP, what can I do ? Complain to ISP ?
Should we DDOS the various DDOSAAS sites, use their weapon against them ... go to one, put in IP of the other and vice versa .... My router drops all unsolicited incoming packets, I tried it ... what are these sites doing that causes the ISP to drop our packets ?
As one close friend [of Darl McBride, SCO CEO], Ty Mattingly, a former co-worker at Novell, said to him: "Congratulations. In a few short months you've dethroned Bill Gates as the most hated man in the industry."
source: https://web.archive.org/web/20040202025445/http://www.crn.com/sections/special/top25/top25_03.asp?ArticleID=45992
Now, Darl is irrelevant, however, for some reason, the pile of excrement who has repeatedly lied to all and sundry, even under oath in front of various courts, is now considered some kind of God-like creature because he promised something ? Gates is a serial liar and a fraud!
Actually, Santa Cruz were in deep shit, Linux was growing strong and was ready for the low and mid end servers throughout the 90's, this cost Santa Cruz aplenty customers. Intel announced iTanic and IBM, the only UNIX vendor with a pair of functioning brains, chose Power AND iTanic, just in case. For iTanic UNIX, they ventured with Sanat Cruz (Project Monterrey).
Intel were late with iTanic and the chip was nowhere near as powerful as it was initially "purported" to be ... the first dev kits were slower than a Casio 100 pocket calculator,
iTanic perception tanked severely, Santa Cruz believed Intel's Gospel and IBM saw a better opportunity, beef up :Linux, but kept the project with Santa Cruz going ... YEARS LATER, still no progress on Intel's side and Santa Cruz was acquired by SCO^HUM.
IBM released something based on Monterrey but without a compiler, ROFL. UNIX without a compiler is basically useless ... Ok, not to me, but to software vendors, anyway...
This, SCO^HUM is claiming did not fulfill the agreement in project Monterrey, so have found another angle to sue IBM.
However, this is a completely different case, this is IBM vs SCO^HUM only, no Linux code to be concerned about ... they already lost that case years ago ... I guess IBM will have to buy them ... will be cheaper in legal fees ... After all, SCO^HUM has backers in many proprietary software houses ... and can sue on any grounds until and after kingdom come ...
You do not mix The Macallan, I hope .. we are not talking lousy bourbon or blend, here ... now, I don't like Cola, so I even drink lousy blend straight, I don't have a sweet tooth, so I avoid Bourbon ... I do love a Single Malt and I can tell the difference, even between some Single Malts (especially the smokey ones) ... no expert, though ...
I luv ajaahhhh

One question I have is who would have the patience to listen to Michael for more than 5 minutes, I tried, I really did try to, hm, listen, but the bloke is full of crap ... so I cheated, went from 0:04:20 straight to to 0:36:00 to get a bit of context ...
Ohhh, and I can prove it:
benchmarks:
5S, 6S, 7S at a non-Apple task, with OS as originally shipped ... perf increase of mere percentage points from one to the next.
With latest iOS, 5S is unusable, 6S is substantially slower than 7S.
There, what more do you need ... they are proprietary for a reason, you know ... to shaft you!
Note that this is not limited to Apple, MS do the EXACT SAME THING, have done for decades ...
Now, I think it's fair to believe that companies such as Apple and Microsoft do try their damnedest to make their products perform as fast and efficiently as they can
Wwwwwwwwwwwhat ? This is beyond funny, silly or ....
I am pretty sure code is littered with something along the lines of:
if (iPhione.version() <= lastGen -1)
{
/*Cheap kid, let's compute pi with enough decimals to make the phone crawl */
compute_pi(1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000);
}
else if (iPhione.version() <= lastGen)
{
/*come on, upgrade to a new phone!*/
compute_pi(10000000000000000000000000000);
}
Note that I was once servicing an XP box, must have been in 2008, and the computer's fans were running like mad, causing an incredible racket, the lady who was using it was about to throw the box out and get a new one.
I backup documents (docs, photos, vids etc), nuke the disk and reinstall XP SP2 (NON-OEM)... fans are silent, I run Windows Update, after a hours, and its 15 reboots (lol), the fans go wild again ... I had not even gotten to the point of installing anything else or restoring the documents, so I go and download latest drivers from Dell, reboot x times, same thing ... the box got a Debian treatment, I restored documents, all fine and everybody happy ... little hand holding, she kept using that box for years ...
So, Windows was intentionally making the fans go wild to get the lady to purchase a new computer. I cannot prove anything, I cannot see the code, but ... why else would this happen ? Faulty driver ?
His body was disposed of at sea</em?
<em> burying it anywhere where anyone could know where it was which might become a shrine.
The sea is the shrine, now, then, rather big one at that, if you ask me ... Muslim traditions was it, i think ... hiding the "burial" place ? They told all and sundry that he was disposed of in the ocean ... so, you only need to find seawater somewhere, like, 70% of the planets surface is sea water and you have a shrine ...
Dumb & Dumber ...
The real answer is that the Microsoft sales drones come in and do a full-court press about how the Microsoft suite will meet all needs at low cost while being fully supported and secure.
The real answer is that the Microsoft sales drones come in and do a full-court press about offshore bank accounts full of dosh, ala Lockheed Martin.
TFTFY
Now turn that data fire hose at the government and see how they like it.
They'll love it, RedHat, Suse, Ubuntu, HP, Dell, Lenovo etc will love it also, remember, since gov functions on "tax dollars" (unlimited supply), money TAX PAYERS pay, they will just purchase the required hardware to process the data ... so your income tax (among others) will grow exponentially.
Ere, the whole point of end to end encryption is that it's encrypted at the senders end and it's decrypted at the receiving end. Those pesky companies in the middle don't get a look in. That's the whole point.
Ere, the whole point of end to end encryption is that it's encrypted at the senders end and it's decrypted at the receiving end. Those pesky companies in the middle don't get a look in. That WAS the whole point BEFORE.
TFTFY
The whole point now is to store some text that idiots will think is the decrypted message, for every encrypted message sent. So, in essence, extracts from "Persian Letters" should do, I think ...
@Stephen
Situation: Bloke employed by gov to set up computer systems does not know how to set them up. Bloke comes from the French-speaking part of the country.
Your interpretation: Bloke got the job thanks to his fluency in French.
Well, maybe, maybe not ... there are more than enough highly trained computer professionals that master Canadian French in Canada.
More like, he got the job because, well, he must be somebody's mate, cousin, neighbour or something ... Shit, read the article again, here we have another guy who does not know what he is talking about ... A gov generally employs the alcoholics or nietsnut (Dutch, google is your friend) that have "connections" and that private enterprise has deemed useless, even for top brass positions.
Tories use illegal tactics in campaign calls, ICO says, no problem, thise, don't do it again ... I guess that is what they tell Equifax as well ...
Where I live, the current mayor's team "cheated" by using bulletins of people who did not turn up ... the mayor won by ~140 votes, in a city with 300k people. The opposition had 48* hours to investigate the registry and "only" found ~100 entries where a signature was used multiple times ... like, the guyz gave up coming up with new signatures and ended up using the same.
Sadly, for the opposition, 100 != 140, so the mayor officially won the election.
If it were me, you find two occurrences of a signature and neither was legalized (you can vote on behalf of someone, if you fill in the paperwork), you investigate the registry ... but no, not in France ... too much hassle, she's a crook, in other words, one of us ...
* They found 100 suspect votes with a team of ten people going through countless records ... needless to say, massive fraud.
PS: Her personal driver earns more than the drivers of the president of France, happens to be "very" close "acquaintance", if I may say ...basically, driver has the same pay as elite civil servants ...
PPS: Her daughter is senator
PPPS: She got re-elected, nobody turned up to investigate for fraud, what is the point ...
Where is our cherished HP fanboy in times of need ?
Have not seen him in a long time, probably got the axe last time ... if this were the case, Matt, we disagree fundamentally on many things as we both know, I still hope you are ok, though.
The more you differ from me, the more you enrich me ;-)! Apologies to Antoine de Saint Exupery ... Antoine's take on it was: "If you differ from me, you do not offend but rather enrich me!"
| Hybrid IT with Cloud | Mobile & IoT |IT for Data & Analytics | HPE Pointnext | How to Buy | Contact
That is the menu on HPE's website ... a bunch of meaningless marketing buzzwords coupled with "How to Buy" (in case you would not know) and Contact, the only relevant item in the menu, if you ask me.
No wonder they sell nothing ...
All this cloud stuff is basically down to this:
The US already had data on 3bn people on the planet, thank you ever so much, facebook, and was lacking data on businesses ... then, some smart ass came along and the following discussion took place:
Boffin: "Since we cannot hack each and every company network, why not centralize the data in controlled data centers. Let's use the might of US IT enterprises and call it 'The Cloud'"
Manager: "Yeah, but, nobody is stupid enough to put their data on your 'Cloud'"
Boffin: "Well, Microsoft has a 90% marketshare in client software, IT decision makers are as thick as rock!"
Manager: "Right, let's do that, then."
While there may be compelling reasons for that decision
If you think about it for a second, I cannot see a compelling reason, mainly because of lock-in. You would want to ideally use multiple cloud vendors for increased resilience, better uptime and avoid lock-in.
OpenStack is the only framework that ticks all these boxes, procure from several players, if a datacenter of one of them goes offline have another DR setup at a different player. Should a player choose to change the terms of the contract, you can always quite easily move to another ... same framework.
only procure public cloud services from Amazon, Google, or Microsoft.
Ahhh, OK, but is this legal ? I doubt it.
As for the UK player, tough world we live in ... feel sorry for the boyz and gals who worked there :-( ... how they could not leverage HMRC as a customer to get more is sad.
With Amazon around, NewEgg lost its relevance especially with free 2 day shipping.
You wanna check on Amazon, far from being angels ... I think it is better to pay the extra 3 or 4% and get the ware from a better online reseller ... cutomer service at, e.g. ldlc.com is way better ... you have an issue, sir, no problem, here is the tracking number for the replacement kit, you have two weeks to return the DOA kit. Happened once in over ten years ... but still, ultra fast delivery, excellent service, even "tech support", and a brick and mortar store no 15 miles away ...
It's only a perpetual beta if you choose to enable early access to builds.
It's only a perpetual ALPHA if you choose to enable early access to builds.
TFTFY. Beta testers are the non-enterprise users, have you not heard of the forced Windows Updates ?
Unix != Windows ... UNIX does not have silly Windows file locking issues, so, as another put it, you copy, then update the kernel interfaces to point to new kernel, finally dump the old. You then do that every 10/15 minutes ... note, the size of the beast is ~1Mb, you can compile your own to make it smaller ... you could move it every minute without noticeable lag ...
Anyone got a 'thing' I could do?
From CVE CVE-2017-8225 link:
the web directory contains symbolic links to configuration files (system.ini and system-b.ini contain credentials):

diametrically opposed cultures
Us two seem to have diametrically opposed cultures, so it seems, so what ? The more you differ from me, the more you can enrich me, has worked for me for over 40 years ... judging people by their culture, belief (e.g. religion), ethnic group, country of birth, Bohr knows what, is plain infantile .... Where does algebra, alcohol, algorithm come from, for example ? [since the Muslims are currently scapegoats worldwide]
There is a reason why we have the notion of "politically correct", it has to do with burning books and then people - in the history of the world, they always start burning books, then slaughter people. It always starts with: But, they differ from us, I beg you, don't fall for that!
Go watch Pokahiontas, Sagan's Pale Blue Dot (on youtube, free!), or I dunno, read some books ... All humans share but this planet, we have but one, our kids must be able to live in a world without silly wars (we can do it), for that, we need to teach our kids to learn to respect people from all cultures.
Anybody should be entitled to live where they choose to live.
DISCLAIMER: I am a Brit, have spent over 90% of my life in different countries ... I am lucky, I am white, from the UK, so I can somewhat freely choose where I live ... why me and not everybody else ? Because I happened to be born in the UK ? Ok, but Feynman, what does that change ?
