Latest figures I saw

Total tax revenue for tobacco in the UK is 10bn.

Cost of smoking related illness to the NHS is 2.7bn.

So that's 7.3bn that the rest of you get out of us smokers.

On the subject of plain packets, I think they will be even cooler than the coloured and logo'd packs we have today. I'm also all for hiding them away from innocent eyes - I don't need tobacco to be advertised to me at point of sale. To be honest, they could hide them at the bottom of a tank of piranhas and I'd still reach in to get them.

And as for the numpty who wants to know why people still smoke - it's for the same reason that I drink vodka, sleep with strangers, jump out of planes and snowboard. Because I enjoy it and find the potential risks do not outweigh the fun to be had.

Documents in Assange rape probe leak onto the net

Wrong Sarah

The issue raised by the previous poster was not complying with terms of consent not the potential outcomes of flouting the terms of consent.

To be clear, I agree that agreeing to use a condom and then not using one is wrong. As would be lying about using contraceptive pills.

The plaintiff in this case raised both the issues of pregnancy and infection.

If you are stupid

My understanding is that he did use condoms when pushed to. One of the plaintiffs alleges that he deliberately broke the condom - something which Assange denies.

Buy by your logic on conditional consent, can I have a woman charged with rape when she tells me she's on the pill when in fact she isn't?

Stu 3
Thumb Up

Read them

I've read the documents now and if I was on jury (not that Sweden has such a thing) I'd be voting for 'Not Guilty'. In both cases it seems that the women involved found Assange to not be the cool guy they thought he was and have suffered from buyers remorse - especially once they found out he was trying to screw his way round Stockholm.

Microsoft wades into interwebulator chat about Hotmail

Title

I don't get the hatemail for Hotmail. Had a hotmail address for over 10 years - it's outlived the various domains I've had, several ISPs and lots of different physical addresses. I very rarely see the UI - does anyone still use the native UI for their email provider? Crazy. I have Hotmail synced with my iPad and use the Windows Live Mail software on occasion.

I used to have problems with spam. A few of us at work had a weekly competition on who had the most outrageous spam for p0rn and with my hotmail address I usually won. But in the last 5 years it's been excellent. Can't remember the last time real spam made it to my inbox rather than the Junk folder.

It does what it's supposed to. And it's free and it's not part of Google.

The point.

This is the point of all these new laws from New Labour - criminalise almost everything so that if the state wants you put away they will be able to find _something_.

So the Tony Tiger prosecution didn't work out and the Police/CPS have to justify the ridiculous amount of money spent so they dug through his inbox until they found something to nail him with (and their arrest-conviction stats are safe).

Phew, we can all sleep soundly in our beds tonight knowing this evil scum is off the street.

Problems and Solutions

"Tablet PC's have always been a solution in search of a problem (outside vertical markets ofc) and I don't see that changing with the iPad."

And that is just like the rest of the IT industry since it began.

Microsoft warns over rogue Security Essentials

Stu 3

Don't be silly...

...we can't have Microsoft bundling free software with their OS. It's just so unfair to all those companies who want to charge for it.

Security Essentials is excellent - I was so glad to find out about it after installing Win7. Probably due to all the law suits MS gets it was actually kinda tricky to find on their website - all the other AV companies were listed first. The best part of SE is it's free.

SMS

"Even if operators did want to return the money those customers are very difficult to track down - it's not as if they're going to pick up the telephone any time soon"

Yeah, but they can do what we (I work for a Mobile Operator in another country) do - send an SMS to warn that they are going to be disconnected and have a certain amount of days to either topup or call before getting permanently cancelled.

Disable Flash in your browser and see how little you miss it!

The lack of Flash on the iPad is one of the things that put me off slightly so I tried an experiment: I disabled the flash plugin on my browser. The first thing I noticed was the increase in load time for most webpages - much better without all those crappy ads. The other thing I noticed was how little I missed it. A few red X's where there was embedded video and that was it.

Flash is rubbish and I won't miss it at all.

UK judges reject Lucas' appeal in Star Wars helmet case

Stu 3

Art?

If I remember correctly, the reason Ainsworth has been able to do this is that he did actually design the original helmets for Star Wars - based on a vague drawing by Ralph MacQuarie (who did all of the concept art for Star Wars). Lucasfilm then neglected to get some kind of deal over rights to the design (seeing as no-one realised it would spawn a billion dollar empire). That's why the question here is whether the design of the helmets are considered "art".

10,000 Hotmail passwords mysteriously leaked to web

Stu 3

Why the Hatemail for Hotmail?

I'll co-sign other commenters here: had Hotmail for over 10 years (in that time I've lived at 8 addresses and had many ISP's) and never had a problem. Easy, portable and doesn't cost a penny.
