Virgin Media email customers enter third day of inbox infuriation

Donchik

2FA?

My issue is that I've been locked out of other systems due to 2FA demands.

Several systems demand an email unrelated to their own system to complete access.

When VM email died so did entirely unrelated services.

Any chance VM will cough up for this disruption - yeah right!

Tweaks to IPv4 could free up 'hundreds of millions of addresses'

Donchik

What about the range gluttons?

Some government and corporate enterprises have whole blocks of ip numbers for their personal business use.

Whilst useful to them perhaps its time to get the vast amount of unused numbers freed up by requiring evidence of need.

Xerox, Amazon, Alibaba, AT&T even Ford, Mercedes Benz have entire address ranges to themselves. HP even has two! 15.x.x.x and 16.x.x.x

100s of millions of numbers could be freed up by less wasteful allocation to powerful corporations.

Several excellent analytical posts here. Mainstream media should consider employing some of you.

On China, I'm intrigued but the possibility that they've quietly supported Putin's insane views only to leverage a shift in the Wests stance towards the Middle Kingdom.

I could easily conceive a situation where they quietly negotiated a opening in trade with the West in exchange for Stabbing Vlad in the back.

After all, "Before you can stab someone in the back, you have to get behind them"

Over my Dead Body

As someone in more than one high risk category I will be isolating regardless of the Propaganda being pushed by our imperious leaders.

I know I'll catch it eventually and my best hope to avoid a terminal event is to delay that occurrence until, hopefully, better mitigations exist so that my chances of surviving improve.

A vaccine is by no means a done deal, and as flu shows not always 100% effective.

Revenue Generating Units?

Really?

As the only way to get a marginally acceptable cable price was to accept a "Loyalty" bundle including a landline phone that has not been used in 6 months it's not surprising to see voice revenue decline. Their phone was always over priced, only the early fibre made it a viable option.

Fibre has been generally ok, but always necessary to chase them about price rises.

I'd happily shift to alternative fibre options but do not have, or want, a fixed telco line installed. I suspect that makes me an easy mark for Virgin as well...

How can just a new privacy policy be compliant

I'm fascinated by the steady stream of GDPR emails rolling through my inbox.

A lot appear to have done the right thing, and are asking for us, the data providers, to provide a clear permission through links to preference pages on their sites. Not problem as I'm happy to tell them what I'd like them to do with their service and my data etc.

Many just like Facebook, Google, and many smaller fry have simply sent an email advising that GDPR has caused them to revise their privacy policy, and provide a link to this. Several have even said continued use of our service constitutes acceptance of these new privacy rules! I think we all know this is not legal in the eyes of GDPR.

I understand some confusion, but this is being deliberately obtuse and I hope the ICO's in all these countries crack down across the board. Consent must mean consent (I know I hate the Brexit analogy)

Former Volkswagen CEO indicted over emission cheating conspiracy

Donchik

Why blame the innocent?

VW designed a system specifically to deceive the testing regime.

Other manufacturers complied with the local laws and testing regimes.

All the other manufacturers have been "Tarred" with the VW Dieselgate brush and have seen significant lowering in revenue due to Diesel sales declines, as well as being presented with new "Real World" testing regimes at very short notice causing considerable disruption and cost to their own compliant programmes.

I find it insulting to hear repeatedly claimed that all car manufacturers are cheating like VW. Put up or Shut UP! Where is your evidence for such nonsense.

What I do find surprising is that the innocent manufacturers have not started legal actions against VW for the consequential damage their deception has caused which truly runs into billions of $/£/€ take your pick.

VW have shattered the public confidence in Diesel which will lead to huge CO2 emissions (Petrol, or Electric Vehicle powered by Fossil fuel power stations etc.) in exchange for a reduction in particulate matter which the latest Euro 6 standards lowered to that of gasoline engines...

Am I angry, sure, but not just with VW, but the media witch-hunt that has followed targeting Diesel in general, and which continues to be propagated by ill-informed social media pundits.

I'm also sure you've detected that I work in the automotive sector, and have a vested interest, but that does not make the facts change.

Upvote or downvote, as you feel fit, but do it based on the facts not the "Fake" news pundits.

Failed Logic

Real issue with AV proposals is that full AV is still a distant dream and one that many do not even want.

All the other partial solutions are based on the failed logic of having a human oversee a computer. Humans are incredibly poor at these kind of tasks, and such systems were long ago excluded as unsafe. Early aircraft autopilots being the clearest example of such failures with pilot coming to trust autopilots over looking out the window to see the ground approaching unexpectedly!

Until full AV systems are available that do not require Human intervention the systems should only be driving aids, for example warning or intervening as necessary to support the driver. Computer support of the driver has great potential, but it MUST be a Human in control ultimately.

Should SANs be patched to fix the Spectre and Meltdown bugs? Er ... yes and no

Donchik

Silly question or not?

Reading all about this at the reg and elsewhere, should other products that are I/O intensive within the system be concerned?

Does Meltdown/Spectre effect the chip-set in the SSD and Hard drives directly?

Will we be seeing firmware updates to address this, and what might the performance impact be on such component level hardware?
