Re: it's not simply down to the manufacturer

It's completely their responsiblity though. This isn't a bolt out of the blue revelation, it's something they were fully aware of throughout the development of this system. They were fully aware that people sell cars. If they didn't put in place a robust mechanism to deal with this fact then they are at fault.

re: Compared to AWS and MS Cloud services wobbles/down time

I don't think that's the kind of trust we're talking about (not that google's cloud seems to be particularly robust if the articles on here are anything to go by).

The question is whether Google can be trusted to not try and monetise your data. Going on previous the answer to that is no.

Re: re: don't bother trying to reinvent wheels that have been invented better elsewhere.

So it's not better, you're just familiar with doing it the old way. I don't have a problem with that. My problem was with the original "invented better elsewhere" comment.

Powershell is different to most command lines because of it's piping and it's state management. That's worth investigation if you're interested in technology, however familiar you are with your current way of working.

A useful extension to the display.

I guess the facts of this depend on whether manufacturers build notch shaped displays from scratch or not. If the notch means cutting a bit of working screen out then it's a waste. If the manufacturers can build them that way then I guess they're ugly but potentially useful.

iPhone 8 now outsells X, and every other phone

sabroni Silver badge

Re: BMW should stop selling the 7 series because they sell more 5s and 3s using that logic.

Not really the same thing is it. They didn't come out with the 7 as a replacement for the 5.

For your comparison to work BMW would have to be currently producing two models of the 7, one from 2 years ago and one newer, slightly bigger more expensive one. If that was the case, and customers preferred the 2 year old model to the current one, they you'd be bang on the money!

It's not the case though is it. Apple released the X to replace the 8, but customers prefer the 8. That's all this story is saying.

Why not? The list of alternatives supplied here is shorter than in my original question. Just saying "it's not that much better" is no help if you don't add "than" and give alternatives.

Re: It didn't improve the functionality of the phone in any way.

Bollocks. Flip to answer and close to hang up are great features that I still miss. A small phone that opens up to one large enough to put a speaker by your ear and a mic by your mouth is functionally better than one where the mic has to filter out loads of extraneous noise. A flip phone can't be accidentally activated in your pocket because it's locked till it's opened.

3 functional improvements right there.
