@WeeJavaDude

I have the same amount of experience and I'm thinking exactly the same!

If i sell you a sprocket that i day doodles and then a year later patch it to stop it doodling you have a case. If I patch it so it doesn't diddle anymore then that's tough titties. Ask for a diddler if that's what you want!

The other side of this is of course that I'm responsible for someone hacking your engine via my sprocket's undocumented diddler!

Re: JAB

The EU didn't mandate that the user experience was fucked up. Plenty of sites manage to pop up a little opt in dialogue. The EU legislation says that sites aren't allowed to track you without your consent.

The sites that behave badly are trying to get people to complain about the legislation because they want to be able to track you without your active consent.

Seems to be working.

Re: Data slurping

The weight of evidence of Google's snooping is far greater than Apple's. Apple predominately monetise through hardware sales while Google monetise through targetted advertising. Snooping is more vital to Google's business than it is to Apple's.

So when faced with one option that definitely snoops as much as possible and one that probably does it's perfectly reasonable to pick the latter.

It's the fact they're grid girls that's sexist. Like there aren't any attractive young men that could do that job! Let's get a nice mix of attractive people, all genders and ethnicities and everyone gets to perv! That's entertainment.

re: stop me painting my own copy to hang in my living room.

Is that what happens? Youtube is full of carefully crafted replicas of copyrighted material?

If I was a painter and you wanted to paint something that looks the same that's fine. But that isn't how this works, the copies take no effort to make, involve no creativity on your behalf and are indistinguishable from the original.

The thing is you love paintings and they bring you happiness. But you seem to think that's all the reward a painter needs.

Re: They didn't really lie, they just never answered the actual question.

They were asked a question, the answer they gave was untrue, that's a lie.

If when asked "How old are you?" I reply "10" I'm lying, even though that is the correct answer to the question "How many fingers do you have?". If I say "I have 10 fingers" then I'm not lying but it's clear I'm answering a different question.

They just replied to the question without clearly stating they weren't answering it so they were lying.

re: Still, if it makes you happy to call people bigots, have at it.

I didn't call anyone a bigot, I merely pointed out that if the comments were full of bigotry it would be wrong of El Reg to follow suit.

The prejudice you have towards Codes of Conduct is a different issue, but in every case here the argument isn't against the code per se it's against the way it's implemented. It's perfectly possible to have a good idea implemented badly. The solution isn't to abandon the idea, it's to fix the implementation.
