Councils show true grit in the face of ... FOI requests

Transport Costs

I have no sympathy at all with the refusal to answer in full the FOI requests. However the price paid for each tonne of salt is dependent on two factors: the cost of the raw material at the point is is extracted from the ground and the cost of transport to the council depots. For a bulky, dense commodity like salt the transport cost will form a large part of the total cost and councils with depots a long way from the site of production will have to pay more than those closer. Not a reason to avoid answering the question though!

Leeks?

Wrong time of year old chap for leeks to be any good. James Bond would have known that and shot you dead for ordering them.

Zamak?

When I were young Zamak (known as Mazak in the UK) was usually referred to as shit-metal. The sort of metal that was easy to cast into odd shapes like the rear light clusters on 50s cars. Not the sort of metal that you would use where any sort of strength was required.

Watching You!

Nobody yet seems to have pointed out the huge difference between GATSO-type cameras and these ANPR cameras that read your number plate and send the data to a central point to be correlated with data from other ANPR cameras. So they are now collecting and storing data on where you are and where you are going. How long before the ID database collects every single sighting of your number plate and keeps it forever? I find the surveillance aspect much more frightening than the speed check thingy. Need to use the back roads more!

Too late!

I am glad BT did not make this announcement a month ago. Then my BT contract ran out and I got my MAC. Last week I became a very happy O2 broadband user with twice the speed at less than half the price. I might have been overcome with apathy and stayed with BT if I had heard this news first!
