But do we know if Verizon is doing this to their terrestrial (Fios, etc) customers? and is there an easy way to test? perhaps a website that gleans all the HTTP headers and will let you know what they are?

Re: Dear Mr Cameron @Dan Paul

But wishing someone ill is not a threat. A threat consists of saying that you will cause ill to befall them. Wishing that someone would get assassinated is a bit rude, I will agree, but is no more a threat than "May you fall through an open manhole". By your logic, telling someone to "fuck off" may be considered sexual assault.

Eh?! Dallas wouldn't be a death threat, nor even would inviting him to travel to (what's left of) Detroit. Requesting someone to do something is not a threat; it is not a threat if I ask you to use the joke alert icon in the future. A threat would have to be .. you know... threatening.

If cities want to run their own broadband, let 'em do it, Prez Obama tells FCC

Re: pouring billions into US broadband infrastructure ...@ Charles 9

If it were universal roll-out, I would be inclined to agree with you. However, it isn't. There are places not more than 30 miles from a significant city that has no cable, no broadband, and not much in the way of 'high-speed' internet. I have lived in one such place, the only internet option was dial-up until about 2005. This was not in the heartland either; but rather near the east coast - no mountains, no swamps, no difficult geography, but also not many people.

Didn't the Bigfoot brand cover 5.25 inch drives? The Fireball was the 3.5" line. I guess they could go back and have Bigfoot as 3.5", and Fireball as 2.5" drives.... but it would be a pale imitation, and feel like it was trading on nostalgia - poorly.

If Seagate did roll out a proper Bigfoot 5.25" SATA drive with the same (average) areal density as these little nippers, that would be trading on nostalgia, and doing it right.

Dot-word domains 'a shakedown, designed to get money out of people'

Re: The whole thing

I can relate to that.

A few years back my sister gave me a domain (registered via goDaddy) as a birthday gift. I pointed it to my host, and promptly neglected it. A year later when the renewal was due, I could not find the birthday card with the goDaddy username/password. I could verify my account holder status by verifying the CC# used to buy the domain; but it was my sister's, and she had shredded that card. So my option was to wait for the domain to expire, and buy it new. I woke up at 6AM EST on the 'magic' day to find that my domain had been registered by some jackass at midnight. I know they were a jackass, because I also had an email from them, to the admin account for the domain, offering to sell me 'my' domain for the low, low price of $300.

Question

This may have been covered in TFA, but if it was, I missed it:

Is the new speed what is required for a service to be advertised as broadband, or is it what is required for a service to be regulated as broadband?

Given Mr. Wheeler's career history and the waffling on Net Neutrality, I could see something like "broadband must be neutral, but this narrow band stuff can be shaped as needed." Leaving 90% of the US having the option to upgrade to 'broadband' or pay 2-5x for their Netflix (First to Netflix, then to the ISP for the Netflix package, then again to the ISP for 'Netflix management fees' etc.) etc.

Apple's DIRTY SECRET isn't that secret, or that dirty

Swarthy

Re: Hmmm... a conundrum (sic)

"the solution is to scream loudly until the companies treat their employees properly"
The topic of this article, and Mark's position, is not based on employees. I believe that is where your disconnect is. If Apple were employing these miners, even indirectly via contracting, you would have a very valid point. The position of the article is that these are not employees, these are poor people literally scrabbling through the dirt for something to help feed their families. There are no quotas, no KPIs, and no TPS reports. If one of these minors could feed their family off an hours work a day, they would have the choice to work 7 hours a week, and be at home the rest, or work more and get ahead in life - their choice. It seems like the 'feed the family' point is about 3 person-days per day, so they bring the children in to help out where they can.

Screaming for Apple or Indonesia to simply stop buying the ore mined by these people would not improve their lives, which is the whole point of screaming about this in the first place, no?

You have a 'simple question'? Well, the answer is NO

Re: The real answer

His working was a bit odd; not in the maths department but rather his type casting. The binary was 52 50, which is ASCII for '42'. A bit the long way, and kind of awkward, but accurate.

Kind of makes sense though, that in this universe The Answer would be a string representation of a number, probably a mis-cast at that.

I'm on my 4th Batch of V2-inspired mead

The last 3 have been scaled up to 5 gal (US) and have had some experimentation. Although I think I got the wrong kind of yeast... they don't stop @ 18%. The last batch tested at 30% ABV.

I shredded an orange into the mix prior to fermentation, it seems that fed the yeast enough to give them super powers. When everything was mixed (before the orange) it was rated at 28% sugar, when I racked it into the aging container, it had 0% sugar - I had to add more honey (~6%) to make it drinkable. After aging the hydrometer said it was 4% sugar. I did skimp on the aging time, I only let it age for 6 weeks. It was delicious stuff, but it would catch one by surprise.

For my current batch I started 3 months ago: replaced 1kg of sugar with 1kg of maple sugar, and have been aging it with cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and 2 vanilla beans. I'll be handing out bottles as Christmas presents. It tastes like Christmas in your mouth.

Re: Early Stage?

I was hoping for discussion, not a vote count.. but I guess as of the current time 5 people don't think it'd be worth it, and 2 people think it would? If that's the case can I down vote my own post?

Maybe I should have worded the comment better: the discussion that I was referring to is the discussion that almost happens on frequent Google articles: What is your privacy worth to you?" I.E. would you trade privacy for unlimited sick time? Would you trade it for free email? (Gmail) Would you trade it for cheap, easy way to keep up with old friends? (Facebook)

I was hoping that a discussion on this would harken less to the old OS battles and actually get some views on the value of privacy.

Swarthy

Re: Early Stage?

Hmm, this could be an interesting discussion.

In the US, you usually don't get 4 weeks of sick time, unless you had short-term disability, which usually kicks in around 2-3 weeks (just after you have used all of your sick and vacation time) and is often a 3rd party insurance.

Would it be worth the occasional covert surveillance to actually be able to use sick (not vacation) time, and not have to shell out for additional insurance, for an injury/illness that lasts more than a week?

'Bout Damned Time!

I have been wondering why no-one has taken a swing at these guys. It is a plainly illegal activity if they are installing malware/trojans. It is illegal (at least unlawful) if they are selling free software (i.e. distributing software for a profit without compensation to the original publisher - AKA Piracy).

It's a shame it had to fall on MS to take a swing for the civil case of trademark infringement; why haven't actual law enforcement taken a run? It's not like it's a small scale, with 65000 complaints, nor would it be difficult to prosecute.

That is an El Reg stock image, from when they ran the story about HBO having to re-shoot that scene. Much like the use of the head in the show, the re-use of this image is about economy, not politics. El Reg didn't want to create/commission/beg/borrow/steal a new GoT-related image; HBO re-used the head because those things are bleedin' expensive, and they didn't think anyone would recognize the re-cycled shrub.

I actually turned on my ad blocker, just to nix the BuzzFeed-esq pictures it does tremendously improve readability, although I still have a large 'broken image' box where the illustration was designed to be. I would rather have that "feature" removed, and then I could disable my ad blocker for El Reg again.

Bong Ventures LLC: We've been cyberhacked

Swarthy
Devil

I have a new app suggestion for Bong Ventures: Griefr - to bring trolling/griefing into the sharing economy, it will scan public Facebook and Twitter feeds looking to references to dead pets/family members, breakups or cheating partners, as well as other traumatic, triumphant, or otherwise emotionally vulnerable event (EVE). It will then notify the griefer of the 'goat' ('cause what else would trolls feed off of?) with a blurb of the event so that the users can immediately start subjecting the 'goat' to abuse without having to wade through hours of mindless drivel for the rare nugget of emotional vulnerability.

Griefr would also make use of geolocation information so the Griefers can avoid trolling someone who is close enough to take physical or legal retribution.

A potential upgrade would allow trolls to pose as 'goats' and have a fictitious EVE broadcast to other Griefr users, so that they may troll the trolls.
