Re: incarceration for talking...
I was with you until you mentioned QR codes. In my mind they are as insecure as shortened URL's.

"you stupid boy!" (to paraphrase Capt Mainwearing)
It is Microsoft you are talking about. Just look at the nice long list of product failures starting with the 'Kin'.
They seem to be more and more Marketing driven instead of product driven these days. Probably far too many MBA's who are PHB's work inside fortress Redmond.
At least they seem to be sticking with the phone this time but sadly, they are far too late with something that might (eventually) turn out to be half decent (As a phone but not on the desktop).Android and iOS have the market almost to themselves.
The lack of apps is going to hinder if not stop the growth of Windows phones.
It is ok to mention Amazon but Microsoft are in this cloudy Biz as well....
I am sure that the MS grand Plan for world domination is to be the one stop shop for everything in the IT world. Who will need anything but a thin client when Azure is behind everything (with a windows 10 frontage naturally)
Well, that is my take on what they are trying to do. If that succeeds then they will well and truly 'own' you.
Two words
Hanging Chads
It is the south. Just accept that the 'good ole boys' will make any ballot go the way the money wants.
I seem to remember days not that long ago when black voters were not allowed to vote because their registrations had somehoe not been accepted.
You Democracy dollars at work.
Makes me more certain never to use any streaming service that I have to pay for.
All that faffing around when things go wrong (As they inevitably do) when all you wanted to do was watch a flick.
Rather be watching paint dry than have to go through all that.
As for 'hot off the press releases'.(aka blockbusters).. are mostly silly remakes or sequels. It is almost at if any trace of originality has gone from mainstream film production.
Kudos for choosing something certainly not in that sphere. Shame the systems let you down.
Oh, and my Humax FreeSat PVR is IMHO better than many Tivo's I've seen in the USA. As for the Clarkson Amazon TV thingy Add, you have to see it because it is titterful but utter shite. Who will miss him from Free-to-Air TV?
All a standard part of the Field Service Toolkit back in the day.
Along with a Soldering Iron, Oscilloscope (or if you were one of the top flight engineers) a Datascope
a 2ft thick pile of schematics.
and tubes of various 74LS chips.
And finaly, a wire-wrap tool for the really old servers with a wire-wrapped backplane.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane this wet Friday Afternoon. Have one on me.
Answer:
Only if said widgets are sent to the USA (Say some tiny port in LA) and then trucked to Canada. Can't have those Teamster Union jobs going 'north' or 'south'....
The real answer is no it won't, It will benfit the American maker of those widgets.
This whole treaty is for the sole benefit of US Corps (Especially the mega corps and hollywood).
This is just a foretaste of what is to come with the TTIP.
I forsee a big push by the Anti-EU mob (US Megacorps) to get little old blighty out of the EU so that we will be the US bridgehead in their takeover attempt for Europe. Sounds familar? WW2 perhaps?
Personally I hope the EU Court has the balls to nullify it outright but my plot of land on an island in the Indian Oveal suddenly looks mightily inviting.
and for that is it little wonder that 30% of the converts to iPhone came from Apple.I wonder what percentage of those were former Samsung owners?
IMGO, (and has been said already), it is time that google insisted that anyone branding their phone Android signs up to provide patches for at least 3 years. Androd is a google trademark and they should be protecting it. Sooner or later it could be dragged down to near zero in the eyes of the public by the inactions of the likes of Samsung, HTC etc.
Think about how much that lovely shiny new (June 2015) VW sitting outside your home is worth now? The VW brand has been Ratnered IMHO.
Even the most rabid fanboi wants decent competition to keep Apple on their toes. At the moment there is a lot of footgun going on in the Android world.
Still have the PDP-11 Instruction set manual on the bookshelf and a complete set of PDP-11/45 Schematics in the loft.
Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way
But I get the impression that for most of us the problem will be in the Network and the connectivity to these storage monsters.
As evidenced by your 'Holy Crap (batman)' when putting in a 10GbE network.
I shudder to think what sort of network connections we will need to even tickle the fancy of the next gen XFlash drives? Light Speed anyone?
The costs of going beyond 10GbE is out of the reach of many SME's so they will have to rely on Hosting or Cloud supplers for this for of setup (IMHO).
Personally, I waiting for affordable PCI-E drives of at least 1Tb capacity. One of my VM setups is making a 6core i7 4.0Ghz sweat a bit yet when I run parts of it on my 2015 Macbook pro that has PCI-E storage, it flies along.
Can you review the costs etc of moving from a smallish 1Gb Lan to 10 or beyond? This could prove very informative for those reading this article.

And fixing them may thus need new exploits to be introduced.
Spot on A/C. We have plenty of evidence of that with the seemingly endless IE patches that path patches that patch ... etc.c
The code must be a nightmare of spaghetti. no wonder they re-wrote it (EDGE) but .... how vunerable will that browser be once people start targetting it?
the latest OSX release had an awful lot of Safari patches as evidenced by the list of CVE's fixed.
You have to remember that these things are designed to work ONLY in US Suburbia.
Nic

i.e. Southern California.
Now, I'd like to see them try to deliver up some of the cobbles streets in Old Town Edinburgh on a wet November morning. They wouldn't get 50 yards before they get destroyed/blown up/knocked off.
If these do exist in iOS then why would the Feds need to force Apple to decrypt a suspects iDevice?
Can we have some evidence please? I'd like to go slap tim cook around the head with it if it is true.
But all the evidence seems to point to their being no back doors in iOS.
come on now, prove us all wrong and then we can rejoice in the fact that iOS is as crappy as Android.
So Apple bans an app that could be used to discover how to break the security of the systems they sell?
(jailbreaking)
They are onto a loser whichever way they go. Bad Apple for removing the CCC app or Bad Apple for letting this hacking App stay in the App store?
You choose ok?
But the publicity that the CCC hs gained from this action is worth an awful lot to them.... All publicity is good publicity eh?

When....
1) will these companies learn that our data is NOT for sharing on the Internet
2) will the head noncho's of these scumbag companies get halued away in Handcuffs?
3) We the poor consumer get automatic compensation of say £500 a time for every breach.
Then and only then will we the punters even begin to start feeling safe letting other have our details.
Until then the CEO's and BOD should suck on this. ---> See Icon
At least she had fronted up and faced the press. A lot of CEO's woul hide behind some faceless PR Hack.
That's the good part.
Until this 'problem' is well and truly off the front and financial pages her job is safe.
Then?
She'd better have a place to retire too to get out of the heat. The T-T problem is only the tip of the iceberg (IMHO). A few non-exec directorships would keep the wolves at bay. Then she can re-brand herself as an expert in the sort of problems that T-T has experienced. Result ... PROFIT (for her at least)
As for the T-T customers? She (IMHO) really does not care. No one in her position cares about us the customers. Fact of life really.
HMG has decided that you can't fly your drones unless you have passed the following proficiency test.
1) Fly said drone from South to North over the Island of Malta during Bird migration.
If your drone does that totally unscathed you will be eligable to apply for a Drone Operators License
Those Maltese shooters will have a field day with any drone silly enough to venture into Maltese airspace.
Downing Drones will make a pleasant change from the Feathered birds that they seem to kill by the thousand.
Does it annoy the users more than the Data Slurping (all in the best possible taste you know) that is this thing they call Windows 10?
On the Anniversary of the release of Bohemian Rhapsody these words come to mind
Is this the real thing?
Is this just Fantasy?
etc
We can only hope that it is.
The use of bt.ly etc and the fact that you have no idea where the link is going to take you is one reason why I never click on them.
Who knows, it might be a sting operation and those fine upstanding people at GCHQ might have tricked you into accessing some [redacted] porn site. The boys in blue standing outside your front door will make a quick entry and that's the last we'll see of you for a long-long time.

Prediction is that Apple will struggle a bit next year.
Apple is Doomed. Seems to be trotted out every quarter but this time I think that they will be as quoted 'starting to struggle' this time next year. Perhaps their iCar (will it Fly?) might save the day.
Looking at it objectively, if Apple are going to struggle then what about the rest of the market?
Time to examine your share portfolio perhaps?
on the RH side of the pond?
Why no lawsuits trying to stop MS from loading malware onto our, repeat OUR hardware?
Are there any members of the legal professions reading this forum? Come on, we'd really like to know your opinion if this blackmail that MS is subjecting us to.
Perhaps MS should be declared a 'Scammer'? After all they supposedly have thousands of support people in India just itching to get their mits on the contents of your PC. Aren't MS acting as an agent for this crime?
Yes I know it is early on a Friday Morning here in Blighty but I spent a good part of yesterday removing all trace of that POS called Windows 10 from a friends PC.
No more.
She's getting a Mac Mini (from fleabay) and will run OSX from next weekend. I could install Linux but she's not really computer savvy enough (and aged 75) to use it.
sorry SatNad you and your team of goons in Redmond have been smoking/drinking too much of the wrong stuff. As is evidenced by the comments in this (and many other threads) we, the IT Literate do not want your shite foisted upon us. We don't want your tracking. We don't want your forced updates.
In short
We are giving you the Finger big time.
However it is clear that MS don't give a toss about us. They really must have inked a sweet deal with the NSA to supply them with all our data.
Rant over. If there was a 'giving a Finger icon' then it would be used here.
Time for a Bacon Sarnie. Organically produced, Dry Cured Bacon I might add.
given the amount of drugs etc their livestock is given as a matter of course. Then their sausages (closer to Wurst) than our types are naturally heavily processed.
But frankly what food in the USA isn't heavily processed???? Just try to eat that rubber they call cheese...
I get my Bacon from an organic farm. No chemicals just natural salt curing.
Sausages are from my local butcher. No rusk or crap added. Nothing but minced meat and herbs (and the occassional dash of Marmite). If minced meat counts as being processed then..the world will truly end this Saturday (after the Rugby though).
