MS is really trying to force its hand and get everyone locked into this perpetual upgrade cycle.

All it needs is a few major business orgs to say No and MS will have to come up with another plan.

MS clearly has no idea at all of the costs involved in just keeping still. With more and more support being offshored to India, it won't end well.

TSMC and Samsung have historically made their SOC's. More recently, it has been almost 100% TSMC.

As for the comments about IOS being out of date etc. That is your opinion. I would counter that by saying that most Hipster Fanboi's don't care. As long as it is easy to use they are fine.

Sure Android can be made more configurable. But be honest here, how many ordinary Android users care? How many do what you want?

I see it like the Linux desktop. Infinitely configurable but how many users do much if anything.

TV Ads

I really hate it when TV Ads come on and the volume goes up by 3dB (i.e. doubling). It is really annoying. Luckily I still have control via the mute button. Then two skips and that's the ad break done.

Ok, that's a lie but there has to come a time when the R&D effort needed to keep X86 alive will exceed the income from CPU's. Then Intel will really be in trouble. It has an ARM license but apparently there is no money to be made with them. so what next for Intel? Are they really a one trick pony?

To buy a device that like many similar ones is a dead end. No patches, no updates. Nada, zilch.

It is a sad fact that the majority of phones sold won't get this and a thousand other patches.

Perhaps when Google gets it act together and makes its own phones and hopefully follows Apple with at least 4 years of updates other makers will follow suit. IMHO, Android needs this badly.

Think of the PC/Laptop as a Car.

The CPU is the Engine.

There are a good few people who still like to tinker with the engine. Even if today it is just getting the EMS Remapped.

So move to the PC and replacing the CPU with a more modern one is like replacing the old 100bhp engine with one from the GT version that output 110bhp.

MS is akin to Ford/GM/whoever making it impossible to put the 110bhp engine into a car that left the factory with the 100bhp engine fitted by changing the engine mounting points and other stuff.

It sucks!

The irony is that most of the people who use Wonga and had their data nicked won't be the sort of target the scammers want to go after. If they wern't hard up why else would you willingly pay interest rates of 100%+++ when a savings account that returns more than 0.5% interest is currently a good deal.

Missing 'critical' applications on Linux

Many Photographers use MacOS with things like Photoshop and Lightroom.

Persuade Adobe to release CS properly on Linux and you will get a load of people switching.

Especially Lightroom.

The other downside (to switching to Linux) is that with MacOS, you can go into an Apple Store and come out with a fully functioning device. Until getting a Linux equivalent is just as easy then this is going to be a really uphill battle. Yes you pay for it but you don't need a CS degree to get it going and there is support only a phone call away.

I'd love to be able to run Linux on some less than clunky laptop

If 70 million sales (for this year) is sinking to Windows Phone levels then WinPhone was once a best seller.

Apple will sell more top end phones than Samsung. I can't see how that is sinking to WinPhone levels of popularity.

Remember that Apple tells the SEC and the world every 3 months how many phones they have sold. Not shipped, sold.

There is a lot to hate about Apple but even the most rabid Apple hater must grudgingly admit that they make shed loads of money from their really inferior products. Now why can't the Android crew do the same? Then everyone would be happy.
