Microsoft promises twice-yearly Windows 10, O365 updates – with just 18 months' support

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

Re: Timed Releases?

And RedHat has 10 years with RHEL. Yes you pay for that but CentOS is built from the same sources and is free.

MS is really trying to force its hand and get everyone locked into this perpetual upgrade cycle.

All it needs is a few major business orgs to say No and MS will have to come up with another plan.

MS clearly has no idea at all of the costs involved in just keeping still. With more and more support being offshored to India, it won't end well.

This

https://news.slashdot.org/story/17/04/20/128224/95-engineers-in-india-unfit-for-software-development-jobs-report

makes interesting reading.

It won't end well for some businesses and their employees.

Yes, you can decide to not use their browser. Then along comes and update and wham bang, thank you maam and all your settings like default browser have been reset to what Nanny Microsoft thinks you want.

And because they have in their esteemed wisdom decided to include (shudder) flash (shudder) there is little incentive for website designers/developers to retire it. a Doh Moment as after all everyone who used the internet is using Windows 10 aren't they? (well that's what MS want us to believe).

TSMC and Samsung have historically made their SOC's. More recently, it has been almost 100% TSMC.

As for the comments about IOS being out of date etc. That is your opinion. I would counter that by saying that most Hipster Fanboi's don't care. As long as it is easy to use they are fine.

Sure Android can be made more configurable. But be honest here, how many ordinary Android users care? How many do what you want?

I see it like the Linux desktop. Infinitely configurable but how many users do much if anything.

Microsoft does not care

about the non corporate user base.

Think about it.

They have this lovely cash cow of Windows 10 and Office 365. They have most businesses by the short and curlies. Even more so with a bit of upselling and you get Sharepoint added into the Mix.

Bingo! You have a cash flow from renting software that pretty well every other business on the planet can only drool about.

Their dabbling with phones and surface is enough to keep those who might be considering moving away on message.

XBox is a side show by comparison (IMHO).

I am so happy that I got off the corporate merry-go-round and ditched MS for good.

YMMV and probably will.

Re: Question

Think of the PC/Laptop as a Car.

The CPU is the Engine.

There are a good few people who still like to tinker with the engine. Even if today it is just getting the EMS Remapped.

So move to the PC and replacing the CPU with a more modern one is like replacing the old 100bhp engine with one from the GT version that output 110bhp.

MS is akin to Ford/GM/whoever making it impossible to put the 110bhp engine into a car that left the factory with the 100bhp engine fitted by changing the engine mounting points and other stuff.

It sucks!

I think that the Media Companies are scared of Apple

I seem to get the impression that they think that signing up with Apple is like signing away their soul to the devil.

I wonder if they fear that Apple will shake up their cozy life (Hollywood Accounting rulez ok) and make them become honest players (or worse).

Apple has dabbled in content creation but so far it is only that.

If the Apple behmoth/juggernaut gets to grips with the media creators then like so many markets before, their lives won't be the same again.

Good or Bad, Apple wading into a market does seem to shake things up. I wonder if without Mr Jobs, we'd still have DRM on Music we purchase? Would we still be using featurephones if the iPhone had not arrived? Without thew iPhone would Android be the force it is today? etc etc

There are a lot of Apple haters here but they have done us all a lot simply by being Apple.

It might be the case that indeed Apple are the Devil incarnate but in an industry where none of the Harry Potter films actually made a profit (according to the Hollywood Accounting Rulez) there is not room for a huge shakeup and making them( Fox, Universal etc) play by the same rules as thew rest of business.

Missing 'critical' applications on Linux

Many Photographers use MacOS with things like Photoshop and Lightroom.

Persuade Adobe to release CS properly on Linux and you will get a load of people switching.

Especially Lightroom.

The other downside (to switching to Linux) is that with MacOS, you can go into an Apple Store and come out with a fully functioning device. Until getting a Linux equivalent is just as easy then this is going to be a really uphill battle. Yes you pay for it but you don't need a CS degree to get it going and there is support only a phone call away.
