Therein lies a big problem.
Lots of us who had private repos have moved them from GitHub the moment that the MS takeover was announced.
Mine has gone. It had more than 400 files in it and not a bit of YAML in sight. No JSON either and just a few lines of XML.
A load of hot air if you ask me. I wonder how many of those YAML files were simply slightly modified copies of those publised on any of the more reputable code help sites such as StackOverflow?

They are the company that everyone loves to hate simply because they are so successful.
From what Tim Cook has stated may times, they are small fry in the data slurp league when compared to MS, Google, Facebook and others but... he could be telling porkies. We simply don't know so we carry on with the guilty until proven beyond all doubt hate of Apple that is the norm and has been the case for years on this site.

Are they really, really sure that all my data and applications (including config files) will be there after applying the update?

Is it me or does MS seem to be more like a bunch of numpties rearranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic as if sinks between the waves? Nothing they do will stop the good ship Windows from sinking.
Some trains especially those that ran on the old BR Southern Region used a two digit headcode to describe the train route. On the Brighton Line headcode 4 was London-Brighton while 5 was also London-Brighton but reserved for the Brighton Belle.
Since the late 1950's every train has had an identifier (or TIN, Train Identification Number). Old BR Diesel (and Electric) Locos used to display this on the front of the Loco. The first digit was for the train class. '1' was Express and so on.
The working timetable shows this Number. Passenger timetables generally don't show it.

According to Hollywood accounting rules very few or even NO films released by Hollywood make money. Yet the studio moguls still have their private jets and mansions in Bel-Air...?
Even the Harry Potter franchise while amongst the biggest grossing movies of all time didn't make much (if any) profit simply due to the way the accounts are put together.

And the chances of that happening is less than me winning the EuroMillions lottery tonight and as I don't play it, the anwser is obvious.
I expect that not only does it index your entire HDD (taking a mere 10 hours during which your PC is too slow to be used), but it saves the index to "the cloud" so it is never lost.
Why?
This is so that the NSA and GCHQ can know about all those dodgy files you have on your PC.
Honestly, uploading to the cloud is a dumbass move of the highest magnitude.

MS Continious Updates === Continious agony for us users.
The US Customs people will soon start opening up all the bits of kit suppsedly made in say Mexico or Germany and if they find one component with a 'Made in China' sticker on it, then they'll impose the 10% or whatever the tariff is on the whole thing and not just on one component.
I see need for facilities in say Vietnam where goods made in china arrive at one end and emerge at the other with a variety of origin stickers on them (Malaysia, Indonesia, India etc) just to get around the Trump Trade War which he can't win.

I was in general agreement with your post until...
Just try adding a new package - download this, edit that, compile the other, add new libraries to satisfy installation criteria, fix conflicts and maybe - just maybe - after a full day of effort and Googling user forums that shiny new app will work.
I have not had to do that(make, make install etc) for years. Modern package managers handle the adding of dependencies for you.
Perhaps you need to get out of your basement a little more (to use a US put down)?
1) It will be late
2) It won't work
3) It won't do the job it was designed to do because of feature creep
4) HMRC/IR-35 will make all the above triply so because they can. "We can't get the staff..."
5) All the above will be true even is Crapita are not involved.
And Finally (unless you know otherwise)
6) The Minister who kick this off will not be around long enough to have to stand up in Parliament to explain why it has gone so badly wrong. This applies to both main political parties btw.

The problem with car leases is the pitiful annual mileage allowance in the lease. I've seen a BMW M3 with a 5K per year mileage.
I'm sure that it won't be long before leasing a PC will come with a limit on the number of hours a year I can be in use and that the leasing company will mandate that it's recording app is always running.
The leasing game is only a winner for the leasing companies. For everyone else? It is IMHO a mugs game.

Gartner report on what their customer for the report wants. If MS commissioned the report then it would come out as positive towards MS.
Many of us have been reading Gartner and IDC reports for years. The operation is always done with a huge pinch of salt. I personally look for who commissioned the report first. Just so I know what sort os slant it will have. Some companies never use the likes of Gartner or IDC. Guess which ones usually come out bottom... Go on guess... It isn't hard... /s /s /s
Well done for getting it to work.
However given the complaints about updates removing manually loaded drivers esp Display Drivers I'd be prepared to repeat the operation each and every time that MS issues even the smallest security patch.
Such is the way with the redomnd control freaks these days. 'Do it our way and when we say or not at all'.
Another problem is that distros in general don't instantly update a package the moment its dev releases the update.
That's NOT a problem. Given the issues that the last Windows 10 update had, (and still might have... who really knows eh?) NOT being on the bleeding edge of the release wave is a good thing IMHO.

As all the phone lines to the properties in my area are run overhead for the last 50/100 ft I wonder if those drones and their operators will be liable for the costs to fix the lines that that will inevitably run into?
2% off Apple's share price isn't just loose change down the back of the sofa, it will have made people panic and the 'drip drip' of anti Chinese manufacturing news could eventually force a rethink by some major players which could have severe implications for the Chinese economy.

Quite where they are going to find all the workers needed when say Apple brings their iDevice production to the USA is another matter entirely. Their current results won't be affected by this so why?

Now for the conspiracy theory.
APPL and TSLA are two of the most heavily shorted stocks on Wall St.
Shorters bet on stock falls.
So the shorters buy options on the target stock(s)
Their golfing/sailing/frat buddies release a story about something that happened years ago
The target stocks drop
The shorters sell the options before the end of the settlement period.
The shorters make money, sorry, make that LOADSAMONEY.

I've yet to put Mojave on my MBP so this article was very timely. I'll probably skip updating it until 10.14.1 is out and a few more of the rough edges are ironed out.
