30 years ago today, the first commercial UK 'mobile' phone call was made

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

Re: Memories

It also cost about a £1.00 a minute to call it, which was a lot of money in them days.

Still used by a few networks for roaming calls so with that and the crazy trend for phablets

it is pretty safe to say,

not a lot has changed.

A load of show off's still saying 'I'm on the train' in loud and obnoxious voices.

Don't forget

The malware as well as the security holes.

Caveat Emptor and all that.

I have a cheapo noname android tablet. I use it for playing solitaire and other simple games. These were loaded the day I bought it in HK. I have read lots of reports about the malware that it was shipped with. So there is no way it is ever coming out of Airplane mode.

I got what I paid for. My issue is with the average job punter out there who really do not know what they are letting themselves in for with some of these cheapo bits of kit.

What about the stuff that Cheffy Chefs wrap around Faggots and real Haggis then?

{Ok, this casing usually comes from Sheep}

but it is much thiner and more edible than pigs stomach.

Any rate what with the season of proper Haggis to come, I don't think that the likes of McSweens will be quaking in their boots.

Strange that your recipe didn't include any parsley or other flavouring. The Hogs Maw that I have eaten in PA was always well seasoned with herbs like parsley (fresh not dried) or something like Nettle.

Re: Bad Data Input/High System Utilisation.

The problem is the quality of the Flight Plan messages.

Having had to develop software that understands the format of Flight Plan messages

(Think IATA Type B messages on steroids)

there are huge potential problems. My system regularly rejects 40% of FPL messages.

For example, the spec says that there MUST be a SPACE after the Aircraft Reg No. Many FPL's are submitted with this missing. Some messages use the IATA code for an destination when they must use the ICAO code.

eg Heathrow is IATA LHR, ICAO EGLL.

This is all despite most FPL's beging generated by software in the first place.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. It nearly did last week.

These events do not surprise me at all.

The world at large

has millions of Admins who are probably nowhere near as talented as Mr Cartwright.

Some are just hardly worth the title of Admin but they may read this article and they try to implement the sorts of things hes describing.

What he makes seem easy is probably far from it.

IMHO, articles like this should come with BIG warnings. 'Do not try this on your live network'.

Buy hey, times are gonna get interesting with the potential for lots more critical systems and networks to go down when [redacted] try to implement SDN on their own networks.

Perhaps we'll get similar instances of the UK-ATC failure on a wider and more regular basis?

Who's got the popcorn in stock becuse it might get difficult to buy some if a few critical networks & systems go down.

The other thing that worries me and a few other IT Pro's (it was discussed in the pub on Friday night) is the potential damage that could be done by the black hats getting into the controllers of these SDN's and wreaking havoc. Imagine if this was done in a co-ordinated way, you could potentially cripple a whole nation. We are so heavily reliant upon computers that you have to ask yourself what would happen in you could'nt drive you car (traffic signals all showing red), Buy food (no orders placed), Cook that food(leccy & gas out due to computer failure) etc, etc, etc.

These whizzo things are all very well and good but... There has to be a downside to them.

Cool technology: Submerged blade servers escape the heat

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

Ah... The memories

Of having to regularly replace ALL the electronics in a couple of PDP-11/70's. There were used to control a Sulphuric Acid plant. The problem was that the Air filtration wasn't good enough and small particles of H2SO4 would get into the Computer Room (that what we called the Data Centre back then) and literally eat the PCB's etc away.

As you are well up on this tech Mr Pott, has anyone thought of using Ground Source Heat Exchangers for the 'Sheds'?

Drill a borehole, drop some pipes down , fill it up again and away you go (simplisitc view!)

Then in the summer the ground would be heated and then that heat extracted in winter.

No more free Windows... and now it’s all about the services

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

Re: Ongoing revenue stream...

Very well said especially about the way files for products are spread around the disk.

Perhaps someone might like to tell Microsoft about this themselves.

Office for OSX does exactly that very same thing.

Shame really because that version is IMHO far better than the Windows version.

The other downside the OSX product is that it binds itself to the Disk Serial Number. HDD goes bad? Change the HDD for an SSD? Then that TimeMachine backup is useless. Well, everything will work apart from Office. It is a full removal and re-install. Thankfully, there is a document on the MS support site that telly you where all the nooks and crannies the installer has put stuff.

If you think that MS Shot itself in the foot with TIFKAM then moving to a Buy the OS and Subsctibe/Buy Patches Model is a huge cannon ball dropping from a great height.

Again, this is a shame because once you get past those silly tiles (IMHO) and the messed up config panels the underlying OS is pretty good.

Class and what 'school' you went to is probably even more important in the US than there.

To succeed there with the 'old boys network' you have to be in the right School, then be accepted into the right Faternitiy/Sorority and thus get that all important ring for your pinkie.

Even after 'School' you get asked which school you went to in many social situations.

Personally, I think that the US is worse than here.

There was a book released by DEC that told you how to design interfaces to connect to the UniBus in the proper way. Along with the Schematics that cam with the Systems, yes Unibus was propetary but it was darned easy to build an interface for and DEC didn't stop you doing it. We had a dodgy interface that messed up all the DEC disgnostics even if it was placed after a Bus Repeater so we made sure that it was always disconnected when their Field Service came to do a PM on the 11/45 we were using.
