All Mac owners should migrate to OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 ASAP

Re: Great

Why the resistance to registering?

The great god that is Apple is giving you the software for free so why not give them a little something in return? You do need to recharge your personal RDF from time to time. The stupid GUI provides you with an ideal opportunity to say a few prayers at the church of St Jobs.

Of you could gearch on Google for 'OSX 10.10 download'. I'm sure there are a good number of sites who will gladly supply it for you.

I do understand the Apple 'thing'. My comment was said very much with my tongue in my cheek.

If there was a Tongue in Cheek icon I would have used it.

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

What about the following options?

1) Meh!

2) Ha-ha you must be joking? Me buy anything from Apple? Hell will freeze over first.

3) Die Fanbois Die!

4) Can someone wake me up in a month when all this palava has died away and the Apple Watch it is being flogged for $50 on Ebay.

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

Re: I'm puzzled by these attempts.

It is the card processor who pays Apple a very small sum per transaction.(0.015% if my memory serves me right)

The Card details are stored in the security chip on the phone. Then you auth the payment with your finger (yes, you are giving Apple the Finger!)

The difference between this and the other types of payment service is that the merchant does not see your card details. Thus they can't track your shopping habits!

For the likes of Tesco this is not good. I will very surprised if they sign up for apple Pay at launch.

Or is that why Tesco are selling their data analytics company?

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

What study?

can we have a reference please? Or is this another 'Apple is crap' piece?

There are a number of iPhone users in my office who are just waiting for it to be launched over here.

If Apple got the likes of Aldi and Lidl to take it then they'd probably get a lot of transactions.

Re: Ummmm

I timed a US Sitcom recently as it was broadcast on E4

The show 'lasted' 30 minutes but the actual programme was 18 minutes long. The rest was Adverts.

An hour long show is actually 44-46 minutes.

During my quite frequent visits to the US, I rarely turn on the TV. If I do, it is for the Weather Channel to get the forcast for the next day. Otherwise trying to watch even half decent shows without the aid of a PVR is just too frustrating to be bothered with.

Is it any wonder that if the US wins a bid to host the FIFA world cup in the future, they will virtually insist that the 45minute 'halves' is split into at least two if not three sections just to satisfy the Advertisers.

As a certified GOM (Grumpy Old Man) I hate all forms of Advertising. we GOM's are not a target market for the advertisers but we have to sit through the crap that is aimed at everyone but us. They should be made to pay me to endure this shite.

as far as I'm concerned then all ad agencies should 'Eat This' (See Icon)

Kudos for the 'Obscured by Clouds' bit

One of my favourite Floyd Albums. Very underrated IMHO.

I have one of these cards in my D800. I agree about the WiFi connection. The problems I encountered were due to too many other networks being on the same channel (Linux to the rescue here). When I reached a spot where there was no other WiFi networks competing for the channel it worked perfectly.

My other issue is that the write speed is not excatly fast. Sure it is a class 10 device but it can't hold a candle up to the SanDisk 95Mb/s cards that I normally use.

Now that there are 280Mb/s cards available, I can't see much use for this in the future.

Re: Underfloor can be much worse!!!

Ahhhhh the memories of Channel Cables.

I used to look after a tiny MicroVax that was used to connect two mainframes (IBM and Amdhal) together using a channel interconnect.

One day I found the microVax sitting in the middle of the floor. Well, not exactly on the floor. The channel cables had been moved a bit to install some more Storage drives and the unit was actually off the floor. The two channel cables and the power cable was clearly visible underneath the Vax.

Oh the memories.

Funny how all these schemes suddenly get noticed

when the juggernaut that is Apple Pay is coming along the road.

I'm more of a cash person than anything (and I dont have a smartphone) so I'm unlikely to use any of the solutions but it does seem to me that Apple have done it just about right with a KISS solution. By not holding any of the details themselves is the way forward. The other solutions just seem to be horribly complicated.

Perhaps this is another case of the first to market is not always the best.

100GB of bundled, free-for-two-years OneDrive cloud storage is said to be the remedy for the missing expansion slot. Samsung makes that assertion by assuming you've got an LTE connection with plenty of download allowance to spare.

There must be a good number of Mobile providers rubbing their hands with glee at this.

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

The girl is ill. She's addicted to tech

Seeing the tantrums of a 14yr old American Girl last week when she had no mobile phone reception out in the Negev I quite believe the girl was showing the same sort of addiction.

This girl went totally apeshit and called her parents Torturers, War Criminals and worse. The family was only going to be out of phone range for two days but for this girl, it was the end of the world.

This is a real sad state of affairs. These kids need proper help not lampooning.

Steve Davies 3 Silver badge

There will be a need for Carbon stuff in the Economy

Even if we stop using all forms of Petrol and Diesel/Fule Oil tomorrow.

We will still have machinery in all those leccy thingies.

That machinery will need lubricants most of which will be derrived from a carbon based resource.

Sure it will be a lot less than now but we can't totally elimiate Carbon use from our lives.

Plastic 'stuff' will mostly be a thing of the past because that comes directly from Oil.

any analyst who preticts that we will be able to survive using no carbon originated stuff at all is a total idion IMHO. Even the most fervent Greens I have met accept that for some things we will have to use some oil in our lives but this is the Grauniad so all bets are off as to the sanity of the writer (joking!)

Unhappy

WTH?

I bought a projector in this size range more about 10 years ago. It was a tad noisy but is the size of a Jack Reacher paperback and has native 1024x768 resolution. Cost around £1100 back then.

I'm in the market for a replacement device now. It has to be 1080p as a minimum. After all, these things have to last a tad longer than the latest smartphone don't they?

As many of these devices seem to quote rather small native resolutions might it be possible to know if 720i, 720p, 1080i or 1080p output is supported?

That would make the comparisons an awful lot easier.
