Penguins, I give you: The SOLAR-POWERED Ubuntu laptop

James 51

Re: WANT!

The refresh rate and B&W status of e-ink screens might be a drawback.

James 51

Re: WANT!

PCPRO article said they were $300. They are a really interesting idea. The solar panels look cumbersome and heavy but it's very interesting.

BlackBerry slides crown jewels into Samsung: BBM Android app touted

James 51

It will keep the brand out there any I am guessing that the best 'experience' will always be on a BB handset. Keeps their hat in the ring, espically if Samsung are paying them.

Sad shop-shelf-clinging BlackBerry Z10 AXED ... in price, contracts

James 51

It would be interesting to read a new review. One thing that was missing from your article is the A10 which is going to take the Z10's place as the flagship all touch screen BB10 device. Sounds like they're running down inventory before it launches.

Russian cargo ship drops off spacesuit puncture repair kit at the ISS

James 51

Re: Metric

Unless they meant pounds sterling? Wonder what volume of what could cost almost a grand on the ISS. Probably depends on if the urine recyc is working or not.

James 51

Title is too long

"1,212 pounds of propellant, 42 pounds of oxygen, 62 pounds of air, 926 pounds of water and 3,395 pounds of spare parts, maintenance equipment and experiment hardware."

Looking forward to the weight v mass debate but can this please be put into something relevant like kilos or elephants (indian or african, it doesn't matter as long as you specify which each time).

What heat wave? Pay still frozen over for 70 per cent at Capita ITS

James 51

"The fact of the matter is that ITS missed its profit target last year by more than 50 per cent and we're in a performance-based culture"

They must have reached their target once before. When that happens you just set the target twice as high, problem solved.

"We have overspent in some cases by as much as 100 per cent against the original budget that was put together for a job of work for a client and usually that also means we're late and we take penalties."

I wonder who made the promises to the client in the first place.

"it's about the quality of the solutioning that gets done, it's about the understanding of the cost models,"

Wow, could spend all day on this one.

Remember folks, it's your own fault you're not getting a pay rise.

'First' 3D-printed rifle's barrel splits after single shot

James 51

Title too long

"A canned statement (PDF) saying that if users try to load a file for a 3D gun its “... smart software scans the model and tries to match its characteristics with the characteristics of a firearm. If certain features align, the software will not allow the user to view and print the model.”"

Phew, GW can breathe a sigh of relief. No one will be able to print their gun toting models any more. But what about the ones with the blow pipes?

Re: a long way off being on the brink of a practical fusion reactor.

Off hand the last figure I heard was about £20, 000, 000, 000 including the compensation or people affected by the spill but BP was arguing that in court claiming a lot of spurious and exaggerated claims were being made. Doesn't stop you having an excellent point though.

James 51

I wish it wasn't so but we're a long way off being on the brink of a practical fusion reactor.

Gender is a function of biology. It’s hard to imagine that if God exists that it has a gender and if it does, why? It would imply the existence of other Gods of the opposite gender and by extension, lots of little Gods and Godettes running round the place (Mount Olympus?). Maybe they’re the ones wreaking havoc.

Re: Bad written software = old versions needed = vulnerable systems

Thankfully I work for an org that rewrites the software when this happens. However I know that a lot of places don't see the point in paying to rewrite software that 'works', even if it does leave a big security hole.

"assuming you add the correct peripherals"

At which point it doesn't really resemable a tablet any more but a (expensive) laptop that wasn't put together properly.

James 51

Re: "The iPad will be marginalised..."

Given that the CEO of BB has killed the playbook and stated he thinks tablets are a passing fad we probably won't see a playbook 2 so all RT has to do is not get canceled to beat that.

The problem with RT is thta people get their hands on it and want the full fat windows experience. Why would you ever bother with RT when the pro is out there? I know its cheaper but the restrictions placed on it and the software it is allowed to run aren't worth the price you have to pay.

BlackBerry's Heins beams: We WILL make some cash, just you see

James 51

Re: @jai

The playbook is a good tablet. I hope that they do continue to support it even if it isn't going to get BB10.

James 51

@jai

They're cutting costs by ditching BB10 for the playbook. Releasing a new BB7 device to keep those who can't afford premium devices interested. Expanding the range of BB10 devices. BB has been targeted by some aggressive short sellers and thy're the ones throwning a lot of the punches.

Universal Credit? Universal DISCREDIT, more like, say insiders

James 51

Re: "The senior civil servants contacted us separately"

No, it should be the prototype but it's not politically acceptable for IDS to turn round and say opps it's going to take another year to get it right. This is the basis for the new system and it won't be fixed before rolling it out.

James 51

"The senior civil servants contacted us separately"

Okay, this should have alarm bells ringing. For two on the same project to break rank like this, something must be really wrong.

MSX: The Japanese are coming! The Japanese are coming!

James 51

I am not sure which model of MSX I had, I didn't see any photos of it in the article but there was defintely a fan inside and after a few years it started to shut itself down because it was overheating.

James 51

No mention of great games like kings valley or time pilot? And wasn't the orginal MSG released on the MSX? Burnt out the CPU fan playing gaunlet.

BlackBerry BB10 devices refuse to leap off shelves

James 51

It's a pity the playbook won't get bb10. There was some speculation that it just didn't have enough RAM. Having used it for a year I don't understand all the hate it gets. Hope they keep supporting it.
