Blighty goes retro with 12-sided pound coin

Pint

Re: Brilliant idea

Didn't anticpate that application. Here you go (see icon).

James 51

Couldn't you use the coin itself an antenna?

James 51

Why not bury a RFID tag in them? I know this would put the price up by a penny or two but wouldn't that be a difficult one to duplicate/fake, make the fakes easier to spot using a reader and it might come in handy when you want to know how much you've got sutffed down the back of your piggy bank/sofa.

Xenon: Bitmap Brothers' (mega)blast from the past

SuperFrog has problems with the onscreen controls and they changed them with an update to make the game playable. Perhaps a few tweaks would help here too.

Nokia tries to lure Android porters with free Nokia X mobes

If you're not required to sell your soul to Google (or anyone else for that matter) they might be worth a look. Haven't seen them mentioned on any of the coming soon pages of various carriers though.

USB cuts the cord, again, with WiGig-derived wireless spec

James 51

I can't help but think this needs wireless charging (and preferably the move around the room kind, not leave it on a charge plate kind) before this would catch on in a big way.

Scottish gov may miss IT budget cut target

James 51

Hopefully with a smaller country and politicians being a bit closer to various coal faces there will be a bit more pressure for them to get things like this right.

The browser's resized future in a fragmented www world

Re: Er what?

Didn't even know there was a register app.

James 51

Re: Er what?

This is a bugbear of mine. Can't watch lovefilm or netflix on my bb7 phone, playbook or linux laptop without resorting to WINE to get a windows version of a browser going. Amazon won't release an app for android cause it could kill the kindle fire.

Re: TBL is MS!

I think his attitude is let’s have the least evil form of DRM and seems to be a pragmatic compromise in the face of corporate power. Ideally I’d get rid of DRM as it only reduces the experience for honest customers but that isn’t going to happen (unless people make it ‘happen’).

James 51

Re: TBL is MS!

Don't feed the trolls.

Re: Er what?

Compuserve, wasn't that buried under a crossroads with a stake throguh its heart?

James 51

Re: re - "Fragmentation is hurting the PC and the browser, yes"

I think he means that apple can't charge 30% for accessing a website so they have produced browsers which are poor to the point that people will pay to avoid using it. Not having used the browser on an iphone I can't vouch one way or another for its quality.

Tiny heat-sucker helps keep Moore's Law going

James 51

Does that mean that you could use an organic solvent and get the graphene back?

If the process was repeated would you end up with a surface that was a better conductor?

Seems like it would have plenty of applications in heating/refrigeration too.

Windows Phone beats BLACKBERRY in mobe OS popularity stakes

James 51

Was looking at phone contracts recently and its hard to believe but the 1020 is marginally cheaper than a Z30 on a two year contract.

there's an e-ink other half for jolla that might interest you. Downside, you might have to build it yourself.

James 51

The mini-pro is the only android phone that has made me stop in my tracks and think I want that.

James 51

Re: Well we almost had it

N900 is still the best 'phone' I've used. If there's a decent keyboard other half for the jolla I might get one. The 5MX is still the king of mobile data entry though.

CIA snoops snooped on Senate to spy spy torture report – report

James 51

My 'knowledge' of the CIA is limited to what you see in the movies but I thought they weren't allowed to operate in the USA itself. Won't they get into trouble for that?

There's no need to read the content of the article any more. Just get Icahn and the company's name from the headline and you pretty much know the story. Surely there must be some sort of corporate anti-pesticide for him.

Re: No wonder Americans are scared

xkcd, is there anything they can't do?

James 51

Nice to see you're out there fighting the scare mongering but nuclear power isn't save by 'accident'. A lot of money and oversight needs to go into the design and running of nuclear power plants. Thanks to dithereing by out political overlards (typo intended) we're going to need at least another generation, probably two) of them before renewables/fusion can take up the slack (some wishful thinking in that time scale I know but I can dream).

BTW, how much radiation is released by coal burning plants in the ash they release into the atmosphere? Purely for the sake of placing these figures in context.

Forgot to say that for all the stick they've been getting, the workers at the plant, particular since the accident deserve some recognition for helping to contain the situation.

BlackBerry brings back call, end keys, touchpad to Q20 keyboard cutie

James 51

Didn't realise that the 9720 had a touchscreen.

James 51

Re: BB Curve vs Z10

Editing documents on the playbook is similarly frustrating. Got a bluetooth mouse. A lot better but because document to go won't let me click in the middle of a word most of the time still frustrating.

James 51

Re: @James 51

I have only the trackpad on my 9320 to base a judgement on. The first was good till it went haywire and the refurbished replacement is acceptable. It is a lot handier than having a touchscreen would be in a lot of situations, particularly when using it as a bluetooth mouse with the bridge connection to a playbook.

James 51

The Q5 was suppose to be their mid to low level device so the reduced component quality was to be expected.

If the Z3 has the same antenna design as the Z30 and usb host mode I'd snap up one up right away.

The combination of trackpad and touchscreen would be interesting.
