So what would the economic effect of leaving the EU be?

James 51

What would kicking out young, healthy, tax paying immigrants and replacing them with old pensioners moving back into the UK do to the economy and the NHS?

T-Mobile prods at corpse of BlackBerry, says 'me too!'

James 51

Re: It was a leading brand in PDA space

If you type to do the assistant brings up reminders as the nearest match but there are plenty of to do apps in the blackberry app store. Don't have a mac so can't help you there. It does pull in facebook, yahoo and hotmail contacts and calendars.

James 51

Oh bugger off will you. I haven't seen such a relentlessly negative article since this morning when when the daily hate was telling people not to let red ed steal the election.

Keurig to drop coffee DRM after boss admits 'we were wrong'

James 51

The pod things can be handy (think the one we have is nescafé or something like that). A lot of my wife's family drink coffee but we don't. For all the times that they visit us they are handy as I couldn't make a decent coffee and the pods keep, an open jar does not.

Have to admit I'd prefer some lose leaf earl grey. They don't have a pod for that.

That has always been the most logical reason for these kind of programs, STASI style suppression of disent. Dr Cory and xkcd have going into the mathematics of how stupid it is as an anti-terrorist program.

Bruce Schneier's Data and Goliath – solution or part of the problem?

How is over sixty percent not a majority?

James 51

Re: What's your really valuable data then?

That's why you don't friend colleagues on facebook and facebook is blocked in work. I have unlimited texts but not data so there are big gaps in the communication logs, particularly those who won't touch facebook with a bargepole. I have never uploaded childhood photos though I do appear occasionally in other peoples. You do make a lot of good points though. Going to have to start to be a little more creative with my smoke screen.

James 51

I always wondered, I never fill in my real details on online forms and my facebook profile is riddled with little white lies and I like stuff I have no interest in. What does it do to the 'value' of big data when the well it drinks from is poisoned?

Tesla Powerwall: Not much cheaper and also a bit wimpier than existing batteries

James 51

The second or third generation of this product could be very interesting if they go for alternative battery technologies like the AL based one that was in the news recently or doped Li. Can't help but think when it doesn't have to go anywhere, power density is not a hugely critical factor. Longevity is.

Not pro-Bono: Russian MP wants Apple to face stiff action for cramming 'gay' U2 into iCrevices

James 51

Re: Better blatant than latent.

I doubt if we will ever know what Putin really thinks on this issue. He does need the Orthodox Church on his side though. That's what is driving a lot of this kind of activity.

Tesla reveals Powerwall battery packs for homes, Powerpacks for cities

James 51

I've heard it might be possible to rent rather than buy. Depends on how much it is of course but might end up cheaper than having to dispose of an old one safely and buy a new one every few years.

'Android on Windows': Microsoft tightens noose around neck, climbs on chair

James 51

As MS had no monopoly on desktop OS and IE did not have a monopoly in browsers.

James 51

That's why I pay for native apps rather than android ports. Sooner or later Google is going to start abusing the play api the way MS did windows and the EU or US is going to have to force them to open it up.

E-voting and the UK election: Pick a lizard, any lizard

James 51

Me too. Imagine a DDOS on election day. A bigger concern might be if you were afraid your vote could be identified. Vote for the right result or some little green men might come knocking on your door.

Re: National Identity Card

In theory the privacy busting is there when you join the existing databases up or ignore safeguards so you don't technically need a new database but it would have helped.

James 51

Re: National Identity Card

It's the privacy busting databases that go with them that put a lot of people off.

James 51

Digital voting systems can be made to work. It's all about putting enough resources in and maintaining them properly (and if you won with the old system, why would you bother?). However to raise engagement changing first past the post and broader political reforms and changes would be a better idea.

Turnbull's digital transformation team discovers user testing

James 51

Getting users to do their testing can be like getting kids to eat their vegetables. Putting it out there like this might just be a tactic to protect developers who don't have sufficient influence to make users do it properly or help put pressure on users to get it done when they are suppose to.

BlackBerry Leap: Touching biz users with a budget(ish) device

Console makers game the EU Commission to avoid energy-use law

James 51

One of the reasons why I am waiting for the first redesign to buy a new console. Had a release 360 that could heat a room all by itself. Plus hopefully they're'll be enough new games worth playing.

'Aaron's Law' back on the table to bring sanity to US hacking laws

James 51

If they framed it as pro-freedom and anyone who opposes it as a STASTI communist it might stand a snowflakes chance in hell of getting past. The prison industry and prosecutors might not be so pleased though.

Google pulls plug on YouTube for older iPads, iPhones, smart TVs

James 51

No chance they could do a rap around on the old api to work with the new one?

It's handy to have the apps built into the TV but that's the advantages of the dongles and consoles, software upgrades. How many TV manufacturers have updated the apps to avoid this.

Actually I was thinking of the murders they cleared their moles to do and interfering with the police investigation afterwards.

BTW if you're a law abiding citizen it might be nieve but why the hell should the state be spying on you?

James 51

If you think this is bad (and I do) you should remember what MI5 and Special Branch use(still?) got up to in Northern Ireland. Greater Good(tm) and all that jazz.

US Navy robot war-jet refuels in air: But Mav and Iceman are going down fighting

Labour policy review tells EU where to stuff its geo-blocking ban

James 51

The single market is about the free movement of goods, services and people. Geo-blocking restricts services. There would still be ways to bring this in by the back door. I'd love to buy anime with Japanese, English and French dub and sub but as it is I would need to buy two DVDs/Blu-Rays because the dvd released in the UK doesn't have the French track and the French dvd doesn't have the Englash track. This is one reason why I liked HD-DVDs, they had lots of language tracks on them.

James 51

Re: "should" ?

As a Brit who goes to France on holiday it is annoying that I've paid my license fee and paid for amazon prime and I can't access either. I could use a VPN but I haven't heard a single good reason why I can't access services I have paid for because I have temporarily moved location.

BTW the BBC would not have to give it's services away for free. I already see ads on the website when I travel and the iplayer could have ads on the same basis or have a login that comes with the license.

Lib Dem manifesto: Spook slapdown, ban on teen-repelling Mosquitos

Re: Rock and hard place

This kind of 'spouse' and divorce talk always struck me as the kind of thing politicians used to talk down to people. It's not the relationship between husband and wife (or husband and husband/wife and wife), it's a relationship between nations. It's disingenuous to present it in another way.

There are lies, dammed lies and statistics but there are a few stats that say Scotland pays in slightly more than than it gets out.

As for being lied to presents no opportunity to have another referendum, saying if often and loudly might convince people it is so but that does not make it so.

James 51

Re: Rock and hard place

Show me the law that forbids it. There can be and no doubt will be. My point is that given the coverage many people seemed to vote no because they were promised devo max. If devo max is not delivered, then they have every right to demand another vote on the basis they were lied to by all the major Westminster parties (which just puts them in the same boat as the rest of us).

James 51

Re: British politics in a nutshell

Which was my point. It's nice to have first hand confirmation.

James 51

Re: Rock and hard place

There would need to be another referendum and the only way another one should be held anytime soon is if all the promises to the Scotish people made during the referendum campaign are not fulfilled. So here's hoping if the tories get in next time they stop lurching to the right and actually fulfil their campaign pledges.

James 51

Re: @ Graham Marsden

If I remember my history correctly it was 'vote early, vote often' but same idea.

James 51

Re: British politics in a nutshell

You would need Finland, Iceland and Germany to that list of basket cases too.

James 51

The lib dems get a lot of stick because of the tuition fee pledge and they probably deserve it but if they had convinced the British public to vote in favour of the single transferable vote referendum it would have been worth it.

Re: Guys, it's really no different on the PC side

The problem with this fashion is that it is so prevalent it is difficult to choose something that does have a removable battery. That's true of laptops and phones. One of the reasons I am not upgrading from a Q10 to a classic is the classic does not have a removable battery and the Q10 does. In another year I'll replace the battery, the screen protector and case and I'll have basically a new phone.

Google's new scribble-tab-ulous handwriting interface for Android

Someone else confirmed it will run off-line but that would be good to know as well. Not sure why you were downvoted.

James 51

Re: Local Processing

I prefer to write first drafts out long hand but then I have to type them up. Could be a resonable compromise but if they really want to impress me it would have to work with mirror writing too.

James 51

Is the processing done on the device or is it sent to Google for analysis and the text sent back?

Health apps and wearables make you nervous, not fit, say boffins

James 51

Re: But...

There is definitely a segment of the population who would benefit but they are people who are already ill or at high risk of something and long term tracking info (if it's accurate and complete) might be of use to professionals in helping them. If you're reasonably well then any benefit is going to be minimal.

It's not difficult to imagine some version of big blue sorting through lots of samples but it will be a long time before legally a qualified human won't be examining anything flagged as suspicious with a few random samples from the normal pile thrown in for good measure. Biggest benefit this system will probably bring is allowing lower qualified techs being sent out to remote locations (or people's homes if they are house bound) and doing the test there with the images uploaded for analysis elsewhere.
