UK snoop system had 1,000 COCKUPS - including 2 duff cuffs

Hate to say this

But I think thats actually quite a reasonable number of errors.

Gotta be better than most other civil service error rates.

Still doesnt justify the powers imo though. Just means we cant legitimately use the rate of errors against them.

Eurozone crisis hits pay TV: Punters pick broadband over telly

Gordon 10

Re: Who wrote this tripe?

Some good points.

What is it about cable tv operators that leads them to take on huge levels of debt? It's not as if they are a real utility.

Is there any cable co in the Europe actually expanding their use base by cabling up new areas or are they all owned by VC's whose only skill is convincing banks to help them start leveraged buyouts?

Seize your moment, Microsoft: iPad is RUBBISH for enterprise

More Gibbering

So Apple dont make good enterprise apps. Dont think we can argue with that.

Newsflash Matt this does not equal iPad is no good for enterprise. There are plenty good enterprise apps for the iPad from Third Parties that let the ipad do well in its niche which is BYOD, Note taking, and very basic office functionality.

iPad as a desktop/laptop replacement - errr Matt nobody sane said it was (not even Apple). Whether the surface is it will take 2-3 years to find out.

In short more inconsistent Matt Asay rambling.

Seriously do you even try to write a coherent article any more?

The point wasnt that it was one Company (Visa) its was *ALL* of them.

At the very least thats Cartel behaviour.

Off all the shenanigans around Wikileaks and Asshat (most of which I have mixed feelings about) - this is the one incontrovertible wrong that was done. It was Censorship by economic means with no due process.

Re: Not as good idea as it sounds...

I had one or two of them. From Tandy I recall.

Basically you had components with terminals ending in springs, and shitloads of wires you used to connect them up by pushing between the spring coils.

They were great fun until you dislodged a wire and couldnt remember where it came from.

UK.gov to clear way for Britain's first SPACEPORT

Gordon 10
Facepalm

Meh regulation

Typical politico's whats needed to kick start any UK based spacesport is a lack of regulation not more of it.

Take an out of the way part of the country - say Wales or Norfolk. Designate 20 sq miles as prime spaceport land. Repeal the health and safety legislation in the spaceport. Repeal any VAT, Income or Import duties on space based activties located there - and watch the companies flood in. Offer relocation incentives and employment quotas for the local slackjaws.

Best of all - since there is virtually no space industry in the uk apart from Surrey Satelites investment would flood in and again since there are vritually no players in this space already no Tax income is lost.

LCD to have killed all* other TV technologies by 2016

Re: Another Plasma Fanboy

Ermm two flaws :

The average consumer doesn't give a shit about black levels as long as its vaguely dark.

The average consumer is far too lazy to run a reset utility.

Gordon 10

Re: So that's it then?

Are you for real? There has been more change in screen technology in the last 15 years as in the previous 50. Given that most of the manufacturing processes are now fairly closely related to chip making techniques there is no reason to suppose we won't be seeing a "moores law" of TV for the foreseeable future.

I agree

except for one key point. Regardless of whether we are in the real world or on the internet one thing still applies - Due Process.

In the Dotcom case due process is being used to punish a suspect - which is pitchfork and torches justice.

In the Assange case he is wiggling like a worm on a hook trying to avoid it.

So in reality the cases are at the opposite ends of the spectrum.

Re: I still can't believe man's arrogance.

You are partially wrong and partially right. In a infinite universe ootentially anything can happen. In chemical reactions for any given combination of conditions there are a finite set of results and even less that would lead to life as we understand it. A great example is increased solar and cosmic radiation than we get tends to smash and damage the complex molecules that lead to life. Is life still possible under these conditions? Possibly but unlikely.

Therefore on that basis we more accurately say that based on our current understanding of chemistry the changes of life arising are slim.

I dont think its arrogance - just more like forgetfulness and failure to state things in terms of probabilities.

Poor analogy

People have been aware of the risks of getting mugged since caveman times and have adapted behaviours to mitigate.

This is more akin to someone leaving the pin pad uncovered or letting a waiter walk off with your credit card. Its something for which the social and technological measures have not yet evolved to adequately deal with and where if some more thought had been given up front the risk could have been further mitigated.

NatWest seeks volunteers to bonk with their iPhones

Stop

Re: iPhones

Errr - did it occur to you that because of the sheer size of the installed userbase even the geeks with iphones (who are willing to play with NFC) out number the geeks of any other single phone model regardless of anything else. Can you name any other single phone (or pair of phones) that comes close to the installed user base of the iphone.

(Actually I can) - probably any 2 newish models of the BB but can you really see hoodies or corporates using pay by bonk (with their own money.)

Although I think BB are missing a trick here. A NFC partnership with Amex would almost immediately allow them to regain their relevance in the corporate world - especially if it went one stage further and allowed pay by PIN for > £20.

Microsoft: Don't overclock Windows 8 unless you like our new BSOD

Gordon 10

Re: Bullpat @JDX

Rubbish.

Since intel dont publish their reliability test stats you dont know whether the 2.5 Ghz is a marketing limit or an engineering limit. History has shown that with the low-mid range limit its generally the latter, with Intel having better yields than demand at that particular frequency & price point so they downsell better chips.

You also need to remember that the price of cpu's has very little to do with the cost of manufacturing and testing at a base level and is all about charging what the market will bear at a particular price point.

Gordon 10
Thumb Down

Engineering tolerances <> Marketing "tolerances" Generally where Intel are concerned the same physical chip is used at multiple marketing price points coz their yields are generally so good. So those of us who OC like the idea of getting something for nothing.

Additionally I guarantee you that OC'ers will

a) Know their TDP rating off the top of thier head.

b) Be running temp monitoring utilities such as speed fan over and above what the bios provides.

All in all an OC'er will have an idea their PC is going tits up long before the average joe.

Re: Overclocking mularkey?

again - you just dont get it. No overclocker I have ever met gets "angry" because their machine crashes more often. They accept thats part of the risk - and minimise it with extensive testing.

Gordon 10

Re: They will hate you anyway so tell about cheapo RAM next

You dont really get overclockers do you?

Most overclockers :

a) Know and accept the risks they run.

b) Spend hours on testing (prime95 and memtest etc) until a stable configuration is reached.

c) backup backup backup.

Indeed lots of us do it just for the lulz - not particularly for some 500 fps magic number. Even for those of use that have some specific performance goals - we still are happy with a trade off between performance and stability.

Lets face it how often have we all seen a standard windows machine crash - pretty damn often.

* Overclocking since the Celery 300a and proud of it. I personally have overclocked specifically to up the performance of my handbrake mkv conversions - and it works quite nicely thanks.

Menage á tablet: Apple vs Amazon vs Google

Gordon 10
Happy

Love this speculation

So we are talking about 3 tablets only 1 of which we actually know exists.

I would guess the best sign of an Apple 7 incher is that if LCD production lines are suddenly mysteriously tied up.

For my bet - The 9.8" ipad will go All retina dropping the £329 ipad 2 and replacing it with a 7 incher.

Shame really having owned both a 2 and 3 - I would say my own personal sweet spot is a 2. The lovelyness of the screen doesnt make up for the weight/thickness and increased charging time the battery needs. I know we are talking grams and millimeters here but on a tactile level the different is marked. Although just to prove contrary a 3 battery with a 2 screen would also tempt me.

HP asks court to force Oracle to obey Itanium contract

Gordon 10

Realistically HP are on to a loser.

Even suppose they win on the contract issue there is nothing stopping Oracle from forking the Db feature set so that Itanic (I love that name too) gets sloppy seconds.

And even if Oracle don't do that there could be plenty of queued bug fixes and performance tweaks that just sit in the request queue.

Rightly or wrongly HP Itanic is staring down the gun barrel on this one.

The middle market software vendors are thriving. The only reason they dont get any bigger is that they tend to get borged by one of the big guys. Its got nothing to do with the price of their software - just a reflection of market maturity.

Google and Facebook grew big on the back of their software - they just choose to monitise it indirectly - its hardly free, just the cost is something intangible - your data privacy.
