Antarctic ice at all time high: We have more to learn, says boffin

Gordon 10

Re: What this means is

Its says very little to those 2 things explicitly. It says we don't understand the mechanisms at work here even enough to classify what they may be. Certainly not "cosmic" whatever that may be. Sounds like something we should call Dr Strange for.

I presume you meant Solar or specifically Cosmic ray interactions in cloud formations. Either that or you were having a 60's hippy flashback. Cosmic man!

Google in 'right to be forgotten' snub probe: Ireland tackles moans

Gordon 10

Re: Witness the discrimination inherent in the system!

Indeed. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Google was deliberately pinging some valid requests back simply to create some noise around the issue.

Conversely I wouldn't be at all surprised if those 18 people are complete f*cktards and have no clue what the content of the ruling was and are expecting Google to "delete t'interwebs" just to get their nudie prod picture removed.

Re: I do wonder

Im not sure comparing R&D spend between M&S and Samsung is useful in this case.

1. The lag between R&D spending and Patent granting is HUGE - it probably takes 10 years to realise the R&D spend in a granted payment.

2. Most of that $3.29 payment probably comes from 5, 10 or 20 year old Windows and Dos patents, and is no guide to what M$ is doing now.

3. Samsung and M$ have vastly different commercial interests outside of the mobile and computing sectors - we don't know how their internal sectors breakdown that overall R&D budget. Its entirely possible that MS's Nokia division has a fraction of the R&D budget that Samsungs phone division has or vice versa.

Doctor Who becomes an illogical, unscientific, silly soap opera in Kill The Moon

Gordon 10

Since it was thre authors methinks it was a press screening and a timed article.

Gordon 10

However preposterous it was

It's my favourite episode of the series so far. Dodgy science, dodgy sets and effects. It could have been an episode from the original series.

On top of that we get some cracking dialogue and brilliant acting between Capaldi and Coleman, and the real Capaldi Doctor appears and he's a cracker forcing his companion to make the decisions.

It has redeemed the series for me.

Our Vultures peck at new Doctor Who: Exterminate or, er ... carrion?

Gordon 10

Re: Still awaiting the *click*.

Just watching the latest episode on the moon.

It's currently redeeming the entire series so far. Dodgy sets, but with a great Capaldi and Coleman moment and a great moral dilemma.

Toptastic!

Agree. a few more glimpses of the family of blood doctor would be good. And the one that offed the star creature in the Xmas episode. Where Donna said he needs a companion to keep everyone else safe.

POISON PI sniffs WiFi from your mail room, goes on rampage

Ok I haven't watched the video but does the payload on the Pi include automated Wifi crackers against the in-house wifi? Otherwise how does it communicate back to the Black Hat? Is he (for its always a he) sat outside in a car or at the starbucks across the road?

If its just speculative - send one to me - I could do with some free pi. Although our mail room does xray stuff so the chances of it getting to me are slim.

Apple bats away yet another WiLAN patent sueball

Gordon 10

If the other companies have settled without any court action its utterly irrelevant to the judge in the case.

Just because others have taken what they probably perceived as the cheap way out doesn't mean Apple or any other have to follow suit. Indeed - it appears for now they been been vindicated for not doing so.

Dear politicians.

If you want universal coverage mandate it as part of the License terms for all networks not just o2.

You had the perfect opportunity when 4g came along and you blew it.

Alternatively all that free 2g spectrum that Vodafone and O2 got in the early days. Mandate that for continual usage of it, especially for new services they both accept 99.9 geographical population coverage.

These guys weren't whistleblowers they part of a conspiracy to smear a man by creating witness statements that were untrue. Regardless is the word plebs were used the second they stepped over the line to do that they were in the wrong doubly so because they were serving police officers. Its also unclear as to which mobiles they were using - if it was their police issue ones the Met was well within their rights to do anything they liked with the phone records.

Frankly given News Corps shoddy record the Sun guy should have be more flipping careful.

There are huge parts of RIPA that are troubling - but anyone who uses the Plebgate mess to moan about it should be picking their ground more carefully as the whole thing is a moral swamp of dubious stories and actions.

In summary valid points but ludicrous example to make them with.

Apple may be control freaky but by luck or design that freakery tends towards far more consumer protection than Google's laissez-faire approach. If it inconveniences the El Reg elites (who are not representative consumers) or developers - tough.
