Re: 'merkins
PNR data was shared with the merkins 14 years ago when I worked on airline systems. I'm surprised the Canucks have only just tried to dip their snouts in the data trough.

The alternative side of the negotiation word have been Apple knowing that the Samsung mobile sales tanking is hurting the entire group and that Apple could fill up both some of the slack demand as a result of Sammy mobile needing to scale back production, and are more able to withstand short term supply constraints by limiting demand in various markets.
Whichever way it went I would love to have been a fly on the wall....
Whilst I agree with you on O'Leary being O'Leary I disagree with you on Ryan air using the same seat pricing models as their competition. Afaik they use a far simpler time based model.
Source - 5 years or so ago I was on the project that deployed one of these pricing models into the other Irish Airline of note - an identical system that was used by both BA and Virgin.
As with all things IT they didn't develop their own internal models they bought in a software package from a vendor that employed a whole gang of clever mathematicians.
Now maybe its changed in the last 5 years but knowing O'Leary's cheap skateryness I doubt it.
Now your employing Grad comment on the cheap - was an accurate description of how RA started their online booking site, but even that became outsourced to one of the specialists in this kind of thing, one of the more niche GDS players when such terms were still relevant.
Afaik you are also oversimplifying on the API front as well - whilst actual price calculations may be ephemeral - the inventory data their are based on certainly isn't (with the possible exception of RA in this case, as they never used inventory based pricing).
...to quietly get in line with the begging bowl once he gets steamrollered by Apple. Especial if Google weigh in with a default design for Android more in line with Apples than the GSMA.
Classic incumbent complacency. I give the GSMA to get a competing solution into multiple handsets and across multiple Telco's before the manufacturers each their lunch.
History has shown us that the mobile Telco's are pretty poor innovators and tend to lurch from fluke revenue stream to fluke revenue stream, more often than not.
the next year or so should be amusing. Must review my Voda shares.
When its the European parliament that is standing up for our rights over our own elected representatives.
In fact whenever a Dutch or German MEP talks they usually make perfect, proportional sense, far more regularly than the sorry lot of UK MEP's, never mind the European Commission.
No wonder half the tories want out of Europe. it both satisfies their anti European and authoritarian tendencies.
There is a stage when a significant minority are unemployed but the prevailing social and economic structures are still directly tied to the output of the remaining cash generating industries.
At some point we need to devise economic models that don't work on financial measures.
Because I believe I understand their motives the best as they appy to me. They want to chop off my head, convert me to extremism or something similar that's contrary to my lifestyle and beliefs.
Snowden I give the benefit of the doubt to - because I approve of his actions and on balance I perceive them to be positive.
The intelligence apparatus I trust the least - because they keep saying "trust us" then abusing that trust.
Quite a balanced statement from an Ex-spy though. Although since she is mouth piecing for MS we should expect she represents their views.
I don't know if you are being deliberately obtuse or not but its never touted as shining a laser in your eyes.
Its touted as a corrective medical procedure.
Your description is analogous to describing surgery as having your body cut open by a man with a knife, accurate but wilfully unhelpful for the case in hand.
Where the solution to it being hot has necessitated more than opening the windows (old people still have windows right), and/or cavorting nekkid.
How many 30c plus days did we get this year? Not many I can recall. There were a lot of high-middling 20's warm days which obviously pushes the average up but it wasn't a scorcher of a summer imo.
What an opportunist twat of the highest order.
Am I the only one who find the premium pricing of the new Nexus models utterly bizarre, just as all the manufacturers are getting hit with falling demand for their premium models in dives Google abandoning the "Vanilla Value" niche it had carved out with the previous Nexus generation.
Apple would probably think (if they cared to) that the fact you haven't taken the plunge previously probably means you weren't likely to this time either. Therefore no lost sale.
Unfortunately for those of us who like that stuff - I suspect Apple will continue down the path of less and less user upgradeability.
I would argue that they are 2 different ways of contributing to the same goal - getting our race off of this planet so we can further continue the species. Only history will be able to judge to what degree each effort contributed.
For instance its possible that the shuttlecock device on SS2 might be re-used in the future on higher orbiting craft - we just don't know.
Indivual members of staff can be done over for all kinds of misconduct already - mainly financial such as insider dealing and money laundering.
The problem with doing it for IT staff would be making sure the responsible person got hit instead of some innocent foot soldier. Would have to be an un-writteb rule that it is applied at executive level eg MD.
Disabling the remote monitor support is a nasty trick wonder how many people will get bitten by that? If I splurge 2K on a piece of kit I should be able to use it with all my other Apple kit.
The less cynical part of me does wonder if its just that the function in OS X is still awaiting a tweak to handle the extra resolution.
The "hacks" require holding on to the card for a noticeable period of time?
If so isn't this just fud to be filed under "no shit Sherlock"? Concerning but not critical.
Whilst I'm all for good robust security - Im getting a little tired of researchers behaving like chicken little and publishing screaming headlines without any supporting analysis of their likelihood under a given use case. They are doing themselves and the security community no favours.
He has a point. - what was the budget for this film in percentages of mission fit out? Is how many instruments/capabilities on the next rosetta did this cost us?
The whole point of govt spending is that you don't have to sell the proles on anything under 5% of the annual govt budget.
Reality check guys. The classic series was at least as tediously hammy and fantstical in places as this one. It actuayll hasn't changed all that much.
Masque of mandragora was repeated recently. It was a akk of the above. Didn't stop it being as entertaining as last nights was. Switch off your brains - kick back and relax, Relive your childhood - stop analysisng it.
Cool. What would be really nice is one on the race to the bottom on labour outsourcing and how long we have until a global equilibrium of sorts is reached by where the incremental savings from outsourcing are not enough to pay for the cost and disruption of that outsourcing.
Most companies in my industry are already on their 3rd or 4th offshoring country because the previous ones have become too expensive.
Wage inflation in the India tech cities is quite big considering the sheer size of their labour market. Employee cycle time is massively high.
Would make for an interesting model.
Nice article but could have done with being a bit more precise about what form of globalisation you were talking about. There aren't actually many yurt eating fundamentalist anti-globalists in the work.
There are also fairly few anti-product globalists in the work - especially where their own consumption is concerned - cheaper socks - bring em on.
The only vocal protests about globalisation are the pure cost of labour based ones. ie Globo mega corp #265 cant be bothered to fix its fundamentally broken processes - so it uses volume of labour to slap a plaster over the problem for the next few years - that gets everyones goat coz a) they have lost their job b) most genuinely believe they could be part of the solution - not part of the problem.
So the fundamental question not asked by this article is what was the true motivation behind IBM flogging off its FAB's - pure cost of manufacture due not enough economies of scale - or something else like a CEO desperately selling off the family silver due to a complete lack of ideas?
Its also worth noting that for the finances of subsidiaries that are essentially internal cost centers is nearly always screwed up - because most globomegacorps don't actually have efficient internal markets where costs and revenues are distributed correctly.
Your point being? apart from mindless trolling of course.
Regardless of whether its 15% or 50% it still makes Apple a major player in the PC space. Many other manufacturers make/made both CE and PC's. Samsung and formerly Sony spring to mind.
You also have a weird definition of what an ARM cpu is - last time I checked it was a general purpose computing chip found in a whole range of electronics from Laptops, to mobile computing to routers to name but a few.
I think El Reg should introduce a FAIL of the Week - just for you.
How to get all the boys in a "computing" class interested.
Lesson 1.
This is how word processors work. Lets replace every instance of "and" with "bugger".
Lesson 2.
The infamous 10 Print "knobend" program.
Lesson 3/Breaktime
Getting Frak! to run on the Beeb. (Caveman with a yoyo platformer) Shortly followed by loading the rude version with the yoyo replaced by something much more phallic. Then continually moving it around the Winchester directories so the teacher can't delete it.
