Rich, a case in point. Despite me setting locale correctly, smart web browsers often correct Oz spelling and leaves mistakes alone. QED. Being loaded on medication after surgery does not help, but if smart things were, the typos would not have happened.

JLV and Postgres scaling. I worked at a site five years ago where Postgres was scaling to tables over 10GB and and growing without problems with speed. It showed GreenPlum was not necessarily needed. Not a DBA so YMMV

Aside from that Shadow*, orbital or close missiles have been launched from under planes for years. Merkins sat killer was launched from an F15. Orbital Sciences also come to mind.

Given the sort of market this "hobby" rocket is aimed at, the cost of aerial boost is high and one can be sure aviation/space management will be anxious to control anything likely to go near low earth orbit, let alone higher.

How about changing companies act so essential services failures mean the boards lose a years salary, not the shareholders. To improve hell desk support, it is about time for an outsourcing tax on all Oz offshored businesses. Alternatively, given the Oz comms model is unlike most countries, ie highly urbanised centers which are very distant, either invest in one of the newer low orbiting satellite businesses or nationalise all telco infrastructure. Charge the cost to all the pollies super who voted to sell Telstra.

Updated mozzie ? Very dangerous if one engine failed, like most twin engined WW2 british aircraft. A Lanc pilot I knew commented that all pommie aircraft required _very_ careful throttle matching or horrible things happened, unlike yank planes where about right was good enough. No reason for this discrepancy was given.

There was a pom twin engine fighter built just as war ended that flew even better. Its performance was amazing for time. ITIRC it could accelerate vertically on one engine. Cant find the reference magazine to name it. I believe only a wing survives of prototype.

An acquaintance employed by some mega-death corp suggests new A10s or even latest F15K planes would be more cost effective for Oz. Perhaps a full revist of the F111 might suit Oz due to its long range. Using modern materials and engines how much better could it be ?

For the poms though I concur that a new Buccaneer would be way to go. Great for taking out the next French invasion. Perhaps also build new Harriers in plastic like the USA marines upgraded version. At least they worked and built locally a few people might have jobs for a while.

how about a daylight readable screen FFS. Only Sony Experia get close in my experience. Dell should re-release an updated version of its 5 inch Streak. Still many around doing great service as backup flight instruments in rec and glider aircraft. You can see them in bright daylight as the screen is transflective. Instant differentiation and better battery life.

@Mark, Telstra service...... Imaginary as unicorn droppings IMNSHO. Had some hardware problems with ZTE phones. Telstra not helpful. Local phone repairer repaired units quickly and easily. Probably poor soldering. However I need external aerials where I go and am not aware of any alternative rugged phones in Oz. Cradles have a uniformly bad reputation for weak signal conditions. A daylight readable screen would be great also.

So yes, if one lives in a high density hell hole, one has "choice" but this demonstrates Oz is an excellent example of market failure in telecoms. Keeping Telstra as a government business had its problems but the duplication of infrastructure in cities while leaving 80% of the rest of the continent at mercy of a monopoly supplier only seemed rational to bought and paid for politicians.

And dont get me started on Telstras hellish offshore hell desk and even worse, cold calling sales weasels

must be age. I noticed that when cleaning out my own MP3s lately that many of the 70s cassette tracks were no longer wanted. At the time they seemed good. Fewer 80s tracks, even fewer 90s. The later ones were tracks where the music was original or lyrics intelligent. I discovered that my tastes have moved to 60s even. Except I still like ABBA.

also the upside of crappy phone networks. Service interruptions will have really stuffup the data mining. So if Tim is right and power supply failures become more common, the data sets might get a bit more confused.

BTW, an earlier commentard stated the GPS on Android probably cant be turned off. Dunno about others, but on my ZTE, keeping GPS and bluetooth off triples battery endurance.

fixed wireless and phone data speeds also slowed immensely by nature of web servers being used now. Little static html anymore, loads of bandwidth hogging java-script, java and each site connects to 10 other sites to download fonts, libraries and other lazy programmers kludges.

The Firefox ( ITIRC) tool that shows the network connections set up by a browsers shows high numbers when one connects to any simple site. How much of the load is snooping by data merchants ? How much of the political stuff-up was driven by mediocre senior bureaucrats and advisors stuck in the copper comms age who think STD is leading edge and advised the elected incompetents accordingly ?

Yes as this august publication stated a month or so back. What baffles me is that Intel owned a very good real time OS development tool in WindRiver systems or could use a well tested stable reliable realtime OS, QNX. Why use an OS theory training example ? Not knocking Minix either. Just is it the right tool for the job question ?
