'Moore's Revenge' is upon us and will make the world weird

Article misses a critical point

Weirdness from complexity. the example of a blue tooth driver mucking about with Office. Back to the original Unix design philosophy. Each tool or code does one thing onl, fails safely (ie does not crash anything else) and is able to be used in a pipeline. Like the way shared libraries were supposed to provide standard capabilities sharable among programs with standard APIs. INSHO, too much crap trying to do un-needed much. As for the rest of the connected dust, get a bigger vacuum cleaner. The bandwidth available to most of us is already too choked by rubbish packets.

As for complex systems, emergent properties work both ways. Unexpected capabilities, usually expressed as weird and unwanted behavior. Been there done that. (fixed it that is).

As for AI jokes, given that most supposedly intelligent humans suffer from an inability to discern good humour, I am sure artificial stupidity will be just fine in merkin mass media.

Reminds me of a long ago analysis on why trying to copy Silicon Valley elsewhere failed. The answer was an entire culture of accepted failure on way to success, coupled with a very short term approach to business life spans and supporting organisations. eg, being able to hire an and office furnishing for 3 months. This also explains why the Japanese attempts to out innovate merkins failed. Able to better engineer others creations, often in innovative ways but core break throughs cam from elsewhere. The problem is fundamentally a world view derived culture problem. The old joke about both BSD Unix and LSD coming from Berkely not being a co-incidence seems to match reality. yeah yeah I know about AT&T, but where did BK spend a lot of time ?

Given the sort of market this "hobby" rocket is aimed at, the cost of aerial boost is high and one can be sure aviation/space management will be anxious to control anything likely to go near low earth orbit, let alone higher.

Yeserday thought I heard a NAB spokes weasel on radio (yes, big radio) explaining the assessment that will be made. Something along the lines of requiring documentation for each "lost" sale. I also note the other routine Oz disaster, NBN have cut off local businesses when connecting them to the NBN cables. Phone dead for 4 days now as copper cut somewhere. No network as usual. Who would be a small businessperson with all the predators charging?

About time a few CEOs and boards had their assets stripped under Proceeds of Crime legislation for making false representations, thus winding up doing a few years hard labour instead of a shell company.

Re: They got 100Mbps wireless in Iceland (country)

yep , no consumer demand because 25/12 Mbs plans get you 3 Mb/sec if one is lucky. So why waste the money. Even those nearby on landline/copper dont get much service at times. FPOS machines can take minutes to do a simple transaction. So much for the online remote medical support hoopla. I suspect that the incumbent telcos will be screaming if the low earth orbit data or phone services take off. Suddenly government interference to maintain oligopoly will become a free market virtue. If its good enough for negative gearing, its good enough for Telstra, Optus et al. At least the low low speeds offer some protection from DOSsing and IOT threats. IOT just wont work.

My cynical side expects that by 2045 the telcos will have consolidated into one mediocre company with monopoly profits and political protection. At least it will be easy to nationalise once the civil unrest in China starts.

Telstra's mobile networks go TOESUP* in national outage

Denarius

but the PHB class

still have bonuses as well as the layer of waste above the PHBs in executive land. How about changing companies act so essential services failures mean the boards lose a years salary, not the shareholders. To improve hell desk support, it is about time for an outsourcing tax on all Oz offshored businesses. Alternatively, given the Oz comms model is unlike most countries, ie highly urbanised centers which are very distant, either invest in one of the newer low orbiting satellite businesses or nationalise all telco infrastructure. Charge the cost to all the pollies super who voted to sell Telstra.

Re: But.. but..

Updated mozzie ? Very dangerous if one engine failed, like most twin engined WW2 british aircraft. A Lanc pilot I knew commented that all pommie aircraft required _very_ careful throttle matching or horrible things happened, unlike yank planes where about right was good enough. No reason for this discrepancy was given.

There was a pom twin engine fighter built just as war ended that flew even better. Its performance was amazing for time. ITIRC it could accelerate vertically on one engine. Cant find the reference magazine to name it. I believe only a wing survives of prototype.

An acquaintance employed by some mega-death corp suggests new A10s or even latest F15K planes would be more cost effective for Oz. Perhaps a full revist of the F111 might suit Oz due to its long range. Using modern materials and engines how much better could it be ?

For the poms though I concur that a new Buccaneer would be way to go. Great for taking out the next French invasion. Perhaps also build new Harriers in plastic like the USA marines upgraded version. At least they worked and built locally a few people might have jobs for a while.

Instant differentiation and better battery life.

Re: Why do they think it would only be microbial scale?

The ice at the bottom might be a problem. The ten plus miles of it. Or, water is destructive to complex organic molecules, especially if it has sulphates in it. Did I mention the steady leakage of hydrogen peroxide from the irradiated ice ? Lets not go into the energy available to build large non-bacterial organisms. So probably only a weak sulphurous acid solution with traces of salts lurking under the ice. However just doing the chemistry investigations would be great research.

Re: Not quite

@Mark, Telstra service...... Imaginary as unicorn droppings IMNSHO. Had some hardware problems with ZTE phones. Telstra not helpful. Local phone repairer repaired units quickly and easily. Probably poor soldering. However I need external aerials where I go and am not aware of any alternative rugged phones in Oz. Cradles have a uniformly bad reputation for weak signal conditions. A daylight readable screen would be great also.

So yes, if one lives in a high density hell hole, one has "choice" but this demonstrates Oz is an excellent example of market failure in telecoms. Keeping Telstra as a government business had its problems but the duplication of infrastructure in cities while leaving 80% of the rest of the continent at mercy of a monopoly supplier only seemed rational to bought and paid for politicians.

And dont get me started on Telstras hellish offshore hell desk and even worse, cold calling sales weasels

Re: Concerned (sorta)

BJ,

I was told from reliable sources that if your are in China, assume your ZTE device is totally pawned. How this is done was not disclosed. A firmware control back channel would be my guess. Needless to say, since this is a known insecurity, it is probable that other governments also use it.

Re: 80s music was mostly dire

must be age. I noticed that when cleaning out my own MP3s lately that many of the 70s cassette tracks were no longer wanted. At the time they seemed good. Fewer 80s tracks, even fewer 90s. The later ones were tracks where the music was original or lyrics intelligent. I discovered that my tastes have moved to 60s even. Except I still like ABBA.

noticed how some ?? and ??? laptops had black power buttons on a black fascia. I had to cover buttons with white tape or whiteout so I could find them. What fool came up with that ? Probably a relative of the architect that refused to put handles or push bards/plates on the ground floor glass doors in glass walls because it would spoil the look. Yes, deliberately disguised the doors. Trying to get inside was frustrating. How the local building gestapo allowed it in development application baffles me.

Seems human interface design has become a lost skill in all fields. About time to make memorising "The Psychology of Everyday Things" mandatory for all PHBs, sales weasels, architects and designers. right on. I have a washing machine with lots of buttons, dials with incoherent markings. It seems both knobs do same thing in different ways, none of them useful. No way to do just a spin cycle, no way to just do a simple wash. no manual. Only known effect of buttons is to make any process longer. How I wish I still had the 30 year old mechanical clunker that used more water but one could select a single function as required or any clearly marked cycle selections using one knob.

Australian government plans to do a Facebook on citizens' data

more likely

follow the money. Who provides the funds that go to the little known bodies that shift money to the organisations that shift money to each of the major TweedleDee/TweddleDum parties and the second ring circus groups that swirl around them ? Businesses would love to get more access to citizens data for advertising and to create "nudge messages" that they can then sell to the sock puppets nominally in power. Since all the current Oz parties of significance operate with a materialist world view they have no distinctive doctrinal differences, ie policy. This proposal is possibly the next step in the destruction of a mostly working democracy by the legal fictions known as companies.

Whether knowingly or not, these act to make real citizens irrelevant in the political process by ensuring parties are dependent on advertising and the required large funding. This is disguised by keeping the appearance of a democratic voting system while making it a mere facade for the real rulers. (Adams Lizards anyone ?) Bit like Augustus. Stripped the old Republic away but maintained the shell of the Senate to keep the plebs quiet enough. No conspiracy required, just a moral vacuum and spin doctors/salesdroids flogging the latest technical utopia at those least likely to comprehend a pig in a poke sales pitch. Sales weasels are rewarded for selling, not solving problems.

If there is any fix, IMHO, it is <soapbox> making it illegal for any non-citizen to fund any lobbying or political activity, let alone parties. Secondly, ensure the limit for such funding from citizens is below say $5000. </soapbox>

I suggest that limiting the number of times some-one can stand for election should be limited to 5 or less to reduce political dynasties. Fanciful limitations like ensuring all candidates have had a life outside academia, politics, SIF, pressure groups and union organisations before being eligible might be worthwhile.

Re: Fixed wireless

fixed wireless and phone data speeds also slowed immensely by nature of web servers being used now. Little static html anymore, loads of bandwidth hogging java-script, java and each site connects to 10 other sites to download fonts, libraries and other lazy programmers kludges.

The Firefox ( ITIRC) tool that shows the network connections set up by a browsers shows high numbers when one connects to any simple site. How much of the load is snooping by data merchants ? How much of the political stuff-up was driven by mediocre senior bureaucrats and advisors stuck in the copper comms age who think STD is leading edge and advised the elected incompetents accordingly ?
