Oracle hits DoJ roadblock on Sun deal

Gut & Dump

I agree with the above who suggested that Oracle is just gutting Sun for the juicy bits and leaving the rest for the carrion munching bottom feeders. It really hurts me to see them do Sun like that, they might as well bitchslap the queen and call her a whore, or piss on the statue of liberty. I am sorry, but I just don't have the proper verbal skills to express how I feel about this move.

I routinely sign documents, that I wish to contest at a later date, as mickey mouse, or some other fictional character. Although it has never come to that, I would just love to see one of them make it into a court case ;)

ISPs vs BBC iPlayer: Missing the point?

Remove the unnecessary

My ISP offers web space, e-mail, virus software, this that, and the other thing. All I want from them is an IP address and bandwidth, but none the less I pay for all of these additional services that I neither want or need. If there were a provider that offered me these two things, I would switch in a minute. I don't even need a tech support number. An outage reporting number, and current network statistics are all I really need, and then only if I am having issues. I should be able to call them up, read them my CMAC number and be good to go with some all you can eat synchronous connections. This fantasy ISP would save probably 60% of their operating costs compared to other providers, and if done properly could compete with the "other" ISPs and still deliver the bandwidth you are actually paying for. ALSO, I want to make one thing perfectly clear to the charge by the byte crowd, I pay for bandwidth, rated in mb/s, NOT for the total amount of data xfered. As an ISP you should expect me to run at 80% utilization 24x7x365. If you want to charge the "consumers" by the byte, you should charge the "providers" by the byte also, effectively putting popular services out of business due to the "surprise costs" and ongoing costs.

NEVER ACCEPT A PAY BY THE BYTE SCHEME. (at least not without dinner and a kiss first, and maybe a reach around..)..

The 2009LX is sweet, I would take a Pre or a sidekick over any of the phones mentioned.

DARPA: Can we have a one-cabinet petaflop supercomputer?

Mike 61
Boffin

Yes!!

I could do it. Petaflop in a standard 19" rack, not a problem. Can't reveal how, but its do-able. I sure DARPA can get my location from the reg if they are really interested.

but M$ said so

So it must be true. I mean sure there is a chance that if you use Firefox or safari that you could be at risk, but nobody actually uses those browsers. Everyone on the planet uses Internet Explorer, so no worries. And certainly no one would set this control to low or off just to avoid being prompted for permission every time you touch your keyboard or click your mouse, would they. Microsoft is never wrong and their systems are rock solid. Just ask them. I will follow them down the garden path of upgrades from XP to vista to 7 just like they told me I should because, after all Microsoft knows what is best for me, and you too. Maybe I should look into a volume license, because after all I want to spread the joy to all the people I know. Everyday at the appointed time of 4:20 pm I bow down toward Redmond and pray to my god bill and all he represents. forgive me for my doubts my lord bill, and please smite the evil penguin.

OLD Military network

The US should give oversight to one of its old military networks to the international community why?? Because everyone is now using it everywhere? Not good enough. I personally think it should all go back to the NSF, at least their prices were acceptable. Lets face it, the mains of the internet will always live in the US and if you want to do something about it I suggest disconnecting from it and building out your own.

I would suggest to all these sites, since the city has publicly admitted that they are violating your EULA, that you suspend all accounts associated with them and prevent any new ones from being created in that netblock..

Shareholders vs industry et. al.

The move may have been questionable from the shareholder perspective, but for the industry as a whole this was the better move. EMC has grown its power base to the point that is is almost the only game in town. It is good to have competition and this will give the datadomain and netapp conglomeration a good battle stance against them.

Of course the share holders really don't care what is good for the industry as a whole, they just want their money. Kinda sounds like a recent investment banking problem that some of us may have heard about.

Facebook facing regulator crackdown

why dont they

just put up a "how we use your data" page that says we give it to anyone, anytime, for any or no reason at all, and you should consider any data you enter into this system to be public. That would solve a lot of problems, and I doubt if it would hurt their questionable business model at all. How many people *actually* read these things anyway.

It's also probably legal, being informed consent and all.

EchoStar stumped in Tivo patent prosecution

Mike 61
Happy

I hope TIVO wins

but only because echostar has screwed over soooo many subscribers with their bait & switch offers and other typical cable company like behavior. It I could put a stick in their eye, I would do it.

On the gripping hand, I am sure there is plenty of prior art out there that involves watch one and record the other, but it probably comes down to the recording and storage protocols used, that are likely unique to TIVO, and not easily reproduced. They need to get an engineer with absolutely no prior involvement with either product to design the work around. And if the problem is unique to the hardware, I see recalls and customer demands for free replacements in the future.

9/11 hero mutt cloned

Mike 61
Coat

what is stopping us/you/them

from actually cloning a person, and if it is only ethics, how many clones have been made already? Also, what (aside from the cash) would stop me or anyone else from getting a public sample of someones DNA from ....something ... they have discarded in the trash, a used bandage perhaps, and having a clone made. How about a little creative grave robbing, eg: Marilyn Monroe. Seems like the famous and recently dead would be ripe (pun intended) for this.

Granted you would *probably* wait for the clone to come of age before you could legally make the beast with two backs with Marilyn v2.0. That is provided Clones have rights, do they?

Then there is the whole crimes committed by clones who's originator has the perfect alibi. So much for DNA evidence..

I could go on, but I have samples to collect ;)

Gov considers website to teach tech skills

The totally wrong direction

most of the populace that owns computers have no need for them at all. The only people who need these idiots to have computers are the people selling and servicing them. Ask anyone you know why they own a computer, instructing them to omit "surf the web", "send e-mail", and "play games" and see if you get ANY reasonable answers. I am guessing not. Even those who originally thought they could store their recipes or balance their check book probably are not even doing that much. I liked it better when the only people who owned computers were people who could also build and program said computer. To the rest of the home computer users....get a cell phone. The goal here should be to educate people as to why they don't actually need a computer when a smaller, less functional device will work for them just as well if not better. Grandma needs webtv and a cell phone. *I* need multiple servers gigabit Ethernet and a UPS in 19" rack.

Microsoft sues family over alleged click fraud

Mike 61
Flame

its not fraud

IT may be annoying, but I doubt if there is anything anyone can do about it. I suggest that someone make a "super-adblock-plus-plus" that automatically clicks on all ads displayed on a page in a separate micro window and then closes them, and does it every N seconds. If this were a firefox plugin it would mean the death to online advertising, and there is nothing anyone could do about it.

I personally think these guys were very clever and have a great business model. Insert yourself in to the supply chain and collect a fee for doing nothing. If the "victims" in this case don't like what happens in an uncontrolled pay per click environment, then may they should re-consider their options.
