You can't put a price on LOVE, says Apple after court's Samsung payout slash

Trokair 1

Bull

"Even though Samsung must pay for its widespread infringement of our patents, this case has always been about more than money," it said. "It's about innovation and the hard work that goes into inventing products that people love, which is hard to put a price on."

This is straight up bull on the highest level. Like a puke fountain overflowing on itself this bag of vomit was presumably regurgitated by some PR drone too stupid to recognize their own insipidness before hitting "send". This is all about money, for both companies. Otherwise they wouldn't charge anything for their products. Or in the very least would be not for profit.

Apple is not the great evil, nor is Samsung some savior but to even read these lines that are so gut wrenchingly void of any truth is nauseating. I'm sure El Reg felt shame by publishing them. I hope your future generations can atone for the crime of publishing this rancid bucket of tripe.

No value for cost

"Smart Home" appliances are not life improvements, they are toys.

I can buy much better toys for the prices they are asking for.

I don't want my house (or most of my toys for that matter) plugged into the internet. Have you been there? It's the least secure place EVER.

Sinister lobby group (AT&T, Verizon among membership) sues FCC to kill net neut

Trokair 1
Meh

The lesser evil, for now.

"Although the net neutrality rules have been hailed by many as a victory for the ordinary internet user, in reality it is more of a win for the new status quo of Google and Netflix over the previous giants of telco policy: AT&T, Verizon and the telco and cable companies' industry bodies"

Telcos (at least here in the US) already have far too much power behind them that they use to squeeze every cent that they can out of consumers while providing the least value possible. It is basic capitalism and no surprise that they have all joined forces to NOT compete against each other, thereby locking broad regions into one or two "choices" for providers while blocking any newcomers and claiming to not be a monopoly (although with the non-compete agreements in place they functionally are). As they own the physical assets, there really is no other choice. Google and Netflix on the other hand, have multiple competitors at your finger tips at any time. Telcos have the physical ability to strangle your (my) choice. I'm all for handing this victory to the Tech Companies as I believe it is very much in the interest of the consumer (vs. the other option).

Battling with Blizzard's new WoW expansion and Diablo revamp

Trokair 1

Don't bother with either

Long story short:

WoW is a shadow of the game it was years ago packed with all the flashy lights and momentary distractions offered by on the best of the worst carneys. Simply put the game hands everything to you with no effort and tacks on mini versions of Facebook games to try and keep your attention. Serious pass.

Diablo 3 was an abortion from the start. The Dev team dropped important game features all the way up to the release (upgradeable rune system, mystic, PvP). What was left had all the depth and resilience of a paper bag. The Auction House, while something I actually eagerly anticipated was quickly overwhelmed by sheer numbers and the mechanics. You shouldn't be able to buy your way to the best loot in a loot hunting game. Negates the whole idea of hunting at that point. Even if you did perhaps split the AH up some so that the entire world +dog isn't flooding it subsequently dropping prices like a stone. No clan/guild support for an always online game? Really? Who thought that was a good idea? Now, are some of these things being fixed in the expansion - yes they seem to be. Is it too late to try and charge me $60 for things that should have been in the game from the original release? That is correct. The only good thing I have to say for Diablo 3 is that the combat mechanics were very fluid. When it wasn't lagging. Or rubber-banding. So I guess that would actually be nothing.

Easy

Bing already has all of my search buisness and they got it fairly easy. They will literally pay you with gift cards to get your searches. Sure, it may take a month or two to add up to the $5 gift card but that is still $5 more than Google has given me. They are both feeding me ads and recording my activity so I should at least get paid a bit for it.

Microsoft: YES! You can have your desktop back again for FREE!

Trokair 1
Thumb Up

Honestly

From all that I've seen all they really need is to restore the standard "desktop" functionality that Win7 had behind the Touch Interface. I was extremely frustrated by the interation of the desktop that they released in Win 8 originally while still enjoying some of the features that the touch interface provided (sans touch on the PC of course). Buisness wise the gimped desktop on Win 8 is just asking for thousands of frustrated support calls that no organization wants to have to answer. We recieved enough calls when the Start button became a circle that apparently blinded people to the fact that it was in the same spot as the original button.

Thumbs up if the full desktop comes back.

Uhhhhh, no

Blackberry had a real opportunity early in the mobile game. They basically owned corporate sales the way that IBM owned corporate backend at one time. They both fell for the same reason, content with the large amount of money they were making they stopped innovating. A few years ago I loved BB handhelds and thought they were great pieces of tech. Today my 16 year old cousin has a more advanced handheld then what Blackberry has to offer. Not to mention that their enterprise server is a terrible muddy mess.

Sorry Blackberry but I don't forsee you dominating anything anytime soon.

Thieves all of them

Every day on my ride to and from work I get bombarded by radio advertisments for the leading mobile and television providers. Common garbage tactics:

We have this and they don't (they do its just named differently)

We are fastest (your $400 a month plan vs. their $50, maybe)

We have more of something (Extra quantitiy with very little to no quality)

People like us better (Surveys manipulated to produce desired result)

I'd switch the station every time on of them comes on but there is literally one of these commercials per 5 minute commercial break on almost every radio station. Perhaps if they spent less time and money lieing about their service and instead improving it and reducing cost to the user then they would get more customers. Just a thought.

On the one hand, yes they are doing illegal things that may cost gigantic corporations a tiny fraction of their revenue.

But on the other hand, those companies pull the strings on our politicians all the time so for once it is nice to see them getting beaten on their own underhanded games.

If the industry was more honest and hadn't pulled so much crap in the name of profit I might feel sorry for them. Their handeling of the situation, namely crying to their bought politicos then hireing $10 million worth of lawyers to persecute 12 year old girls who downloaded 2 albums has finished the souring process however. Forward thinking labels will spring up and provide people with what they want at a price they can afford. They already are. The "Old Guard" can either evolve into this market or watch more of the customers flock to any avenue that won't bend them over through price and DRM. Screw the greedy bastards I say.

Sorry world, this is the fault of the US public. We have allowed Corporations to run our country, even to the point where they have granted themselves personhood. Out of this "Do whatever we want" attitude they are allowed to patent anything that comes as common sense, even with tons of prior art. Rounded black edges patentable? Really? REALLY? Bottom line is the majority of our public are either too stupid or too lazy to do anything about it. At least Europe seems to have a more level head about some of this stuff. The Corporation lawyers are busy trying to out litigate each other while the Patent Office is either staffed with the mental equivalent of 3rd graders or paid off. Either way stupidity reigns and it is our fault.

Most game studios are way too content to have their games appeal to the masses for 2 months then dump them and bring a new project. I feel like the Browser Game genre and Facebook in particular to blame for this. “When the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised by an artful man, – who was governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should not do it openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually, by totally disusing and neglecting the militia.” –George Mason

Re: WoW could have been eternal

@nexshil: I totally agree. I would say right up to the end of BC there was challange. Things were gated for a reason and that reason was that once you were actually able to work your way to open new content (grinding isn't all bad) it was an achievement and more importantly felt like one. Starting at the end of BC with Badge Items all the way down to now everything is being handed out. There is no achievement in getting the same thing that the next guy 10 guys have because you spammed your AoE skills in 10 instant form dungeon groups. Giving away gear for badges cheapened the entire experience and they just keep adding in shortcuts until the point that the game will be akin to whack-a-mole.
