Fear and Brexit in Tech City: Digital 'elite' are having a nervous breakdown

Dan 55 Silver badge

You know, if I could just make crap up and lie outlandishly with a cheeky grin without troubling my conscience, I'd probably have a sizeable majority of people demanding that I be PM too. I don't need the crap hairstyle though, I've already got one of those.

Re: Irish passport

When (if) Brexit happens and assuming you can't get Spanish nationality because of ancestry, you could get residency as a non-EU family member. Then you would need 10* years of constant uninterrupted residency to get Spanish nationality. You would need to be able to speak Spanish and have paid social security stamps for most of that time.

You would need to give up your British nationality but Britain allows you to renounce your British nationality to gain Spanish (or any other) nationality and then immediately apply to recover your British nationality again.

* Yep, 10, unless you have Spanish grandparents or ancestry from South America, Andorra, Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, or Portugal, or Sephardic Jewish ancestry in which case it's two.

Switzerland is an EFTA country (bilateral agreements with the EU) which unilaterally pulled out of free movement. That's expensive to do, the EU made things difficult for Switzerland in other areas that Switzerland is getting round by spending a lot of money.

Dan 55 Silver badge

Boris, ever since Friday, has been saying stuff that points his idea of an exit from the EU is that the UK becomes an EEA country. I don't think that what was people voted for.

But who can tell, tomorrow he'll say something else. Post-truth politics, innit. He'll just shit out another Telegraph column.

There is no fucking way everyone's going to wait

Things cannot go on as normal while there's three months of House of Cards for the two main political parties and then afterwards work out whether or not there really will be an exit or there'll be new elections or a second referendum or however they want to backtrack.

They are going to find out they're not as important as they think they are.

They either come up with a credible routemap now or any argument about the UK pulling out because it pays x million a day to the EU will become academic anyway.

Dan 55 Silver badge

Hell, it's better written and more thought out than...

a) the PM's contingency plans (remember he did call a referendum and as it had two options, the leave one was a possibility)

b) any of the leave campaigns' plans (one web page instead of a 600-page document as the SNP came up with)

While HM's Loyal Opposition slowly disappears up its own fundament.

It's a modern-day emperor's new clothes with the entire British political class. Of course, it's unlikely that any of them will suffer for the damage they've done to the country.

Who wants a boring digital agenda when there are great political games to be played?

Cameron calling a referendum on a state question with just a simple majority to win it because he had internal party problems and then pissing off two days after he promised to stay and get the UK through this. Labour Remain half-heartedly campaigning while the leader secretly wants out. Tory Leave not having so much as a clue what happens afterwards, you could see it in Johnson's and Gove's faces in that press conference on Friday morning and backtracking on almost everything in the last two days. The SNP had a six-hundred page book with the route map they would follow if they won the independence referendum, Leave have one web page. Labour self destructing at a time when at least one stable party is needed. Half are incompetent and the other half believe in scorched earth and to the winner the spoils.

Has there ever been a time when it's more obvious that the UK got where it is (was?) despite its political class, not because of it?

Are they capable of getting decent exit conditions out of the EU? Are they fuck.

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: Did UK make ever something positive to make EU stronger?

It really had no real impact on the refugees crisis. It was just the scapegoat.

Those makeshift shanty towns near Calais are only there because there are border controls.

The real problem is how to protect the *external EU borders* of those countries under refugees pressure.

Build a wall like Trump? Pay off countries with very distasteful regimes so they can do the dirty work? Expand the EU so much that it becomes academic? None of them are particularly good solutions but the EU is currently engaged in all three.

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: Did UK make ever something positive to make EU stronger?

1. You're confusing freedom of living and working for EU citizens and border control. Being out of Schengen did do a lot to stop the effects of the refugee crisis reaching the UK. Is that racist? I don't know, but is it wrong to not want people just rocking up?

2. It's nice that you don't have to change money if you want to go on holiday to a neighbouring country, but perhaps you don't live in Southern Europe or you do but you're sorted for a job, unlike possibly over 50% of young people. Southern Europe never had the chance to control its currency to mitigate the economic crisis and it's still paying for it.

There is instability across Europe now. Precisely because the UK is taking up so many unemployed people from other EU countries and other EU countries are hamstrung in the face of the crisis.

Your response is "the UK should follow the common rules because if you're in our club you follow our rules" without a single thought about if the rules are right or wrong. This is why there's referendum polls are still 50/50, why France is more eurosceptic than Britain, why Eastern Europe is turning to the far right. But what's more important is the coins look nice in your wallet. Try arguing for a change in the rules instead of arguing that countries should leave because they've found out that the rules don't work.

Re: So where is the post to balance this out?

Margallo (Spanish foreign minister) let slip something last week... he's sure that in the end there'd be a bilateral trade agreement between EU countries and the UK without any tariffs.

Dan 55 Silver badge
WTF?

Re: Did UK make ever something positive to make EU stronger?

Perhaps you could explain why the UK should have accepted Schengen and the Eurozone despite them obviously not being good things.

"Because everybody else does it" is not generally a good reason.

Why does everybody have to be the same and do the same things in this club? I still find it very difficult to decide which way to vote but there is a huge democratic deficit in the EU and a load of things that have been kicked over to the other side of the referendum (EU Tax ID number, EU Army, Spanish budget after their elections on the 26th, bigger EU budget, further expansion, and so on). That ain't cricket.

Referendum recounts have to be requested by applying for a judicial review up to six weeks after the result. This happens per counting area, there can't be just one judicial review ordering a national recount or a recount covering several counting areas.

London Mayor election day bug forced staff to query vote DB by hand

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: UK elections.

However they haven't done everything to make a polling station voting "accessible". There's no law that says voting has to take place on a Thursday, it's just a tradition. Elections and referendums* could easily be held on a Saturday or a Sunday and it'd be much easier for people to turn out meaning postal voting would be used less. As there would be fewer postal votes they could be scrutinised more and maybe votes could be permitted if only a good reason can be given.

Until they do that it could be claimed they're not really interested in reducing the chances of postal vote fraud.
